Dit essay begrijpt het project van Krisis vanuit ‘het epistemologische probleem van de kritische theorie’, namelijk: vanuit welk standpunt is emancipatoire kritiek überhaupt mogelijk? Door de kritische theorie in brede zin op te vatten, worden vormen van politieke contestatie en de theoretisering daarvan die vaak als 'identiteitspolitiek' worden weggezet besproken in relatie tot de vroege denkers van de kritische theorie en het late werk van Foucault over tegengedrag.

Der vorliegende Band vereinigt Husserls letzte Nachlaßmanuskripte, die im Zusammenhang mit der Arbeit an der Krisis-Abhandlung in den Jahren 1934 bis 1937 verfaßt wurden. Mit dieser werkgeschichtlichen Edition wird ein Ergänzungsband zu Husserls letztem Werk, Die Krisis der europäischen Wissenschaften und die transzendentale Phänomenologie, publiziert in Husserliana VI, vorgelegt. Husserls Arbeitsplan für die Krisis-Abhandlung wurde rekonstruiert und in der `Einleitung des Herausgebers' dargestellt. Die Texte erschließen mit anderen in den Husserliana publizierten Manuskripten Husserls Weg zur Krisis-Abhandlung (...) und deren Fortsetzung. Die Prager Vorträge: Husserls letztes Auftreten vor der philosophischen Öffentlichkeit (1935), seine Stellungnahme zur publizierten Krisis-Abhandlung: das Handexemplar von 1937 und Husserls letztes philosophisches Manuskript (1937) werden veröffentlicht. In systematischer und wirkungsgeschichtlicher Hinsicht stehen die transzendentalphänomenologische Begründung der Geschichte und die Lebensweltthematik im Mittelpunkt. Die erstmals veröffentlichten Texte stellen Husserls philosophisches Testament dar. (shrink)

In seiner letzten Schrift unternimmt Husserl den Versuch, auf dem Wege einer teleologisch-historischen Besinnung auf die Ursprünge unserer kritischen wissenschaftlichen und philosophischen Situation die Notwendigkeit einer transzendentalphänomenologischen Umwendung der Philosophie zu begründen. Er geht von seinem Begriff der "Lebenswelt" aus und entwickelt eine auf diesen Zentralbegriff seiner Spätphilosophie gegründete eigenständige Einleitung in die transzendentale Phänomenologie.

The founders of Krisis saw their journal as part of Rudi Dutschke’s ‘long march through the institutions’: a philosophical journal that would criticize and change the practices and institutions of academic philosophy from within. Philosophy should play a critical and emancipatory role in society and in intellectual and public debates, and the journal could help to enhance that role. Academic philosophy did change, but in a rather different direction: new public management took over and submitted academic research and education (...) to a new regime of entrepeneurial efficiency and disciplinary competition. To survive, Krisis metamorphosized several times and is now a broad bilingual online journal for intellectual debate and research with a loose relationship with academic philosophy. If it strengthens this identity, it can continue to play an intermediary role between academic research and public debate, in both directions. (shrink)

Identity politics, like Krisis, has its origins in the early 1980s. This coincides with Michel Foucault’s rejection of demands or claims of identity as ‘to be left to the police’. In a strange but perhaps inevitable twist of fate, identity politics has later one become affiliated precisely with policing, leading to political correctness in which identity claims are both mandatory and subject to politically motivated censure. While initially in the service of emancipation, identity has thus become weaponized, which reflects (...) an important shift in political and cultural sensitivities between the 1980s and the 2010s. This article reinterprets the Husserlian Krisis through a contemporary lens, situating the lifeworld (Lebenswelt) not merely as a forgotten origin of scientific meaning but as a dynamic horizon of intentional sense-constitution. Against the background of modern epistemic fragmentation and hyper-specialization, we argue that the crisis of science is not a pathology of knowledge, but the manifestation of a deeper ontological disconnection: the severing of objectivity from its genetic foundation in lived intentionality. By critically engaging with the transcendental project of (...) Husserl, and bringing it into resonance with both dialectical reason and structural realism, we propose a renewed function for philosophy as a historical-transcendental critique of knowledge. We further introduce the notion of regimes of intentional effectuation to describe how scientific practices constitute worlds through noetic constraints. In the face of cognitive automation and symbolic alienation, we diagnose a proletarianization of intentionality: the subject no longer gives meaning to the world, but is constituted by the noematic systems through which it is represented. This calls for a reactivation of philosophical responsibility—one that does not seek metaphysical foundations, but clarifies the historical structures of sense from within. (shrink)

In The Crisis of the European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology, Husserl argues that the only way to respond to the scientific Krisis of which he speaks is with phenomenological reflections on the history, method, and task of philosophy. On the assumption that an accurate diagnosis of a malady is a necessary condition for an effective remedy, this paper aims to formulate a precise concept of the Krisis of the European sciences with which Husserl operates in this work. Thus (...) it seeks an answer to the question: What exactly, according to Husserl, is “the ‘crisis’ [Krisis] of the European sciences”? There are two different tendencies in the literature on this question. According to the traditional interpretation, the Krisis of the European sciences lies not in the inadequacy of their scientificity but in the loss of their meaningfulness for life. According to an innovative suggestion, the Krisis lies not in the loss of their meaningfulness for life but in the inadequacy of their scientificity. These readings are mutually exclusive because each claims that the other misidentifies the Krisis as something that it is not. The argument of this paper, however, is that, given the many different senses of Krisis in The Crisis, an adequate understanding of the Krisis that Husserl identifies requires not a disjunctive but an inclusive approach. Therefore the paper proposes that Husserl’s Krisis of the European sciences is both a crisis of their scientificity and a crisis of their meaningfulness for life. The relevance of this result to Husserl’s philosophical and historical sense-investigations in The Crisis—as well as to the present critical situation of philosophy—is self-evident. (shrink)

Der Kern der Denkleistung Schellings kann als der fortgesetzte Versuch umschrieben werden, einen absoluten Anfang, den Ursprung, zu denken. Nach Schellings eigener Meinung ist die Losung dieser Aufgabe in seinen Weltalter-Texten erstmals formuliert. Hier liegt der Schlussel zum Verstandnis des spaten Schelling, vielleicht der ganzen Philosophie Schellings.

Phenomenological philosophizing is practiced out of a sense of responsibility for contemporary culture, which is experienced as existing in a profoundcrisis. The first part of this contribution contains a systematization of the theory of crisis, a theory developed in many of Husserl's works: the description of the main phenomena of the consciousness of crisis, the explanation of crisis with regard to its causes, and the demands raised in order to overcome the crisis of scientific culture (»reflection«). Husserl's teachings on crisis (...) are placed into close relation with his idea of science and science's Greek origin, an origin from which, according to Husserl, modern science has tragically distanced itself. It is argued, however, that Husserl was not at all a philosopher of decline or decay. The second part of this contribution represents an attempt to provide a critical and complex answer to the question as to the modern relevance and usefulness of Husserl's theory of crisis. (shrink)

The majority of the twenty-two essays of this festschrift start from the assumption that after Kant's critique and Nietzsche's work metaphysics has become problematic. About half of the articles concern Nietzsche's thought. This is understandable inasmuch as Wolfgang Müller-Lauter, to whom this festschrift is dedicated, devoted much of his work to Nietzsche.

The philosophical journal Krisis has been around for 40 years this year. The editorial board wanted to celebrate this by asking four editors from the past and the current editor-in-chief to shed light on the past, present and future of Krisis. In this introduction, some of the developments of the journal are briefly mentioned. Despite all kinds of changes that have taken place since Krisis was founded in 1980, the journal has remained true to itself.

Die 4. Auflage bringt zunächst die Kommentierung der Präambel und der Art. 1 bis 19 auf den aktuellen Stand von Judikatur und Literatur. Die grundlegende Struktur des Kommentares wurde beibehalten und um neuere Entwicklungen wie die Implikationen der Europäisierung und Digitalisierung sowie der Corona-Pandemie ergänzt.Die Herausgeberschaft des Kommentares hat ab der 4. Auflage Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf übernommen. Auch im Autorenkreis sind personelle Veränderungen zu verzeichnen: Mit Ausnahme von Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, Alexander Thiele und Ferdinand Wollenschläger, die bereits an der 3. Auflage mitgewirkt (...) haben, liegen die Kommentierungen in den Händen neuer Autorinnen und Autoren.Der Kommentar erscheint in drei Bänden und wird nur geschlossen abgegeben.Der Grundgesetz-Kommentar ist Bestandteil des Moduls Verfassungsrecht PREMIUM, das bei beck-online.de erhältlich ist. For all these reasons, it is helpful to have a volume such as the one under review, which gives the historical and textual background for Crisis. Ably edited by Reinhold N. Smid, who has been associated with the Husserl Archives at Cologne for many years, the volume contains papers from the period 1934-37, just before Husserl's death in 1938. Crisis itself was published in its present form only posthumously in 1954, but its first two parts appeared in the journal Philosophia, (...) published in Belgrade, in 1936. The idea of composing this work came to Husserl after he gave two lectures in Prague on 14-15 November 1935. The lectures provided the nucleus for Crisis, and the typescript for them is published in thirty-three pages of this volume. It is interesting to note that the title for the typescript is "Psychology in the Crisis of European Science." Although psychology is extensively treated in Crisis, the issue of that science is not one of the themes that commentators usually discuss. It is helpful to see how central psychology was in Husserl's later thought. The point is that he must distinguish the philosophical study of man from the empirical psychological study if he is to avoid taking philosophy as merely a partial science and if he is not to betray the special mode of being of transcendental subjectivity. The study of man must not be carried out according to the "objectivist" methods of modern science. (shrink)

This essay examines the semantics of crisis in late Husserl, seeking to contextualise this within its time and to consider both contemporary references to Husserl’s diagnosis – from the end of the interwar period – and current discourse surrounding the so-called ‘polycrisis’. The alarming picture of a crisis in the singular is contrasted with both the question of the inner plurality inherent in this very crisis and with today’s deliberate reflections on a multiplicity of crises. The urgency of critical escalation (...) or, conversely, permanence and thus possibly the loss of the notion of an end to the crises, as well as of a resolution: here, Husserl seems to have opted, anachronistically, for a pathos of decision-making that no longer makes any sense within the framework of discourse on the polycrisis. The contrast between the singular crisis that drives action and the many crises that run counter to one another could also be interpreted differently, i. e. in favour of a phenomenology that acknowledges the multiplicity and heterogeneity of philosophical findings on crisis, yet cannot condone passivity. In the Krisis manuscripts, the warning against ‘Müdigkeit’ (weariness) serves as a key metaphor for this. At this point, Husserl calls not only for a change of attitude, but for action, even though it is clear that phenomenology – as a philosophy – possesses scarcely any means to this end. (shrink)
