ObjectiveWe conducted the following cross-sectional study to comprehensively assess the anxiety among Chinese international students who studied online during the COVID-19 pandemic and its influencing factors.MethodsQuestionnaires were distributed through “Sojump,” and a total of 1,090 valid questionnaires were collected. The questionnaire was divided into two parts: general situation and anxiety assessment of students. The former used a self-made questionnaire, and the international general GAD-7 scale was used to measure anxiety. Chi-square test was used to analyze the differences between groups, and (...) logistic regression analysis was performed for the factors with differences.ResultsAnxiety was found in 707 of 1,090 international students. Chi-square test and multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that the incidence of anxiety was higher in the group under 22 years of age than in the group over 22 years of age ; International students living in big cities had a higher incidence of anxiety than those living in rural areas ; international students who socialized 3 times or less monthly had a higher incidence of anxiety than those who socialized more than 3 times per month ; international students who expected purely online teaching had a higher incidence of anxiety than those who expected purely offline teaching or dual-track teaching ; international students with a subjective score of online learning experience of 6 or less had a higher incidence of anxiety than those with subjective scores of more than 6. However, gender, emotional status, BMI, major of study, vaccination status, and degree type had no significant difference in the incidence of anxiety among international students who studied online during the COVID-19 pandemic.ConclusionDuring COVID-19, international students who were younger, came from big cities, had low social frequency, expected purely online teaching, and had poor experience of online classes were risk factors for anxiety during online classes. This study explored the differentiated neural correlates of mental rotation in preschoolers with high and low working memory capacity using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Altogether 38 Chinese preschoolers completed the Working Memory Capacity test, the Mental Rotation, and its Control tasks. They were divided into High-WMC and Low-WMC groups based on the WMC scores. The behavioral and fNIRS results indicated that: there were no significant differences in MR task performance between the High-WMC and Low-WMC group ; the Low-WMC group activated BA6, (...) BA8, BA 9, and BA 44, whereas the High-WMC group activated BA8, BA10 and BA 44 during mental rotation; significant differences were found in the activation of BA44 and BA9 between the High-WMC and Low-WMC groups during mental rotation; and the High-WMC and Low-WMC groups differed significantly in the activation of BA 9 and BA10 during the control tasks, indicating that both areas might be responsible for the group differences in working memory. Based on neural machine translation, this article introduced the ConvS2S system and transformer system, designed a semantic sharing combined transformer system to improve translation quality, and compared the three systems on the NIST dataset. The results showed that the operation speed of the semantic sharing combined transformer system was the highest, reaching 3934.27 words per second; the BLEU value of the ConvS2S system was the smallest, followed by the transformer system and the semantic sharing combined transformer system. Taking NIST08 as (...) an example, the BLEU values of the designed system were 4.74 and 1.49 higher than the other two systems. The analysis of examples showed that the semantic sharing combined transformer had higher translation quality. The experimental results show that the proposed system is reliable in English content translation and can be further promoted and applied in practice. (shrink)

This research investigates the importance of trade-off salience in understanding how variations in consumers’ construal levels can influence moral judgments. Across five experiments, trade-offs are implied and explicitly made salient, and construal levels are manipulated by altering temporal distance and perceptual fluency, and by using a well-established cognitive method. Consistent with prior research, we demonstrate that higher construal levels can reduce anticipated unethical behavior, when trade-offs are not salient, by making higher-level moral values more prominent. When trade-offs are salient, however, (...) we reveal that unethical behavior is increased when construal levels are elevated by making desirability-related thoughts relatively more prominent, compared to feasibility-related thoughts. Tests of mediation provide support for the role of desirability- and feasibility-related thoughts. Together, our results provide insight into the opposing predictions made by construal level theory for ethical decision making by revealing how trade-off salience, often inherent in ethical dilemmas, systematically influences the effects of construal level on ethical decision making. This paper concentrates on the event-triggered H ∞ filter design for the discrete-time Markovian jump neural networks under random missing measurements and cyber attacks. Considering that the controlled system and the filtering can exchange information over a shared communication network which is vulnerable to the cyber attacks and has limited bandwidth, the event-triggered mechanism is proposed to relieve the communication burden of data transmission. A variable conforming to Bernoulli distribution is exploited to describe the stochastic phenomenon since the missing measurements (...) occur with random probability. Furthermore, seeing that the communication networks are vulnerable to external malicious attacks, the transferred information via the shared communication network may be changed by the injected false information from the attackers. Based on the above consideration, sufficient conditions for the filtering error system to maintain asymptotically stable are provided with predefined H ∞ performance. In the end, three numerical examples are given to verify the proposed theoretical results. (shrink)

While the existing literature finds that corporate social responsibility (CSR) can provide insurance-like protection in negative events, it remains unclear how CSR buffers firms from market penalties for negative events. To address this concern, we conduct event studies and regressions using data from the environmental violations by Chinese publicly traded companies and their interlocked companies from 2009 to 2021. Our results show that the market reacts negatively to environmental violations. The market penalty diffuses through director networks and leads to the (...) collective punishment of interlocked firms. CSR has an insurance-like effect that buffers market penalties and collective punishment for environmental violations. Long-term CSR has a stronger insurance-like effect than short-term CSR. Additionally, the insurance-like effect of CSR still exists during repeated environmental violation events. This paper contributes to the literature on the insurance-like effect of CSR and provides a reference for corporate CSR practice and investors' CSR decisions. (shrink)

The rapid development of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT has catalyzed significant advancements in legal AI systems, exemplified by models like LawGPT. However, most existing legal LLMs primarily focus on tasks such as legal knowledge Q&A, case retrieval, and statute search, lacking the capacity to model the procedural complexity, adversarial dynamics, and multi-role interactions inherent in real courtroom settings, failing to address the critical demands of practical legal education. In legal pedagogy, simulated courtroom serves as an indispensable tool (...) for cultivating high-caliber legal professionals. Recognizing this issue, we propose CourtSim-LLM—a specialized LLM designed for Chinese mock court education, leveraging in-context learning to simulate comprehensive courtroom proceedings. Our methodology involves two key innovations: (1) the construction of the CourtSim-Law Dataset, a multi-turn dialogue corpus capturing authentic courtroom dynamics, especially adversarial courtroom debates and syllogistic legal reasoning, and (2) role-specific Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) fine-tuning of a Chinese open-source legal LLM to simulate plaintiff and defendant interactions. We employed a hybrid evaluation method comprising 11 indicators and organized 15 senior legal experts to conduct a double-blind evaluation to comprehensively validate the performance of CourtSim-LLM in generating simulated courtroom dialogues. Experimental results show that this model significantly outperforms other models in key dimensions such as "text quality," "procedural integrity," "adversarial argumentation ability," and "judgment logic," scoring approximately 1.5 times that of the baseline model and nearly twice that of other comparative models. This not only demonstrates the model's superior performance in procedural rigor and adversarial argumentation but also promotes the application of AI in simulating multi-role, multi-task court proceedings, effectively bridging the gap between legal theory and practice. This research aims to analyze the influencing factors of migrant children’s education integration based on the convolutional neural network algorithm. The attention mechanism, LSTM, and GRU are introduced based on the CNN algorithm, to establish an ALGCNN model for text classification. Film and television review data set, Stanford sentiment data set, and news opinion data set are used to analyze the classification accuracy, loss value, Hamming loss, precision, recall, and micro-F1 of the ALGCNN model. Then, on the big data platform, (...) data in the Comprehensive Management System of Floating Population and Rental Housing, Student Status Information Management System, and Student Information Management System of Beijing city are taken as samples. The ALGCNN model is used to classify and compare related data. It is found that in the MR, STT, and MPQA data sets, the classification accuracy and loss value of the ALGCNN model are better than other algorithms. HL is the lowest, the Pre is second only to the BERT algorithm, and the Re and F1 are both higher than other algorithms. From 2015 to 2019, the number of migrant children in different grades of elementary school shows a gradual increase. Among migrant children, the number of migrant children from other counties in this province is evidently higher than the number of migrant children from other provinces. Among children of migrant workers, the number of immigrants from other counties in this province is also notably higher than the number of immigrants from other provinces. With the gradual increase in the years, the proportion of township-level expenses shows a gradual decrease, whereas the proportion of district and county-level expenses shows a gradual increase. Moreover, the accuracy of the ALGCNN model in migrant children and local children data classification is 98.6 and 98.9%, respectively. The proportion of migrant children in the first and second grades of a primary school in Beijing city is obviously higher than that of local children. The average final score of local children was greatly higher than that of migrant children, whereas the scores of migrant children’s listening methods, learning skills, and learning environment adaptability are lower, which shows that an effective text classification model is established based on the CNN algorithm. In short, the children’s education costs, listening methods, learning skills, and learning environment adaptability are the main factors affecting migrant children’s educational integration, and this work provides a reference for the analysis of migrant children’s educational integration. Extreme Learning Machine is widely used in various fields because of its fast training and high accuracy. However, it does not primarily work well for Domain Adaptation in which there are many annotated data from auxiliary domain and few even no annotated data in target domain. In this paper, we propose a new variant of ELM called Discriminative Extreme Learning Machine with Cross-Domain Mean Approximation for unsupervised domain adaptation. It introduces Cross-Domain Mean Approximation into the hidden layer of ELM to (...) reduce distribution discrepancy between domains for domain bias elimination, which is conducive to train a high accuracy ELM on annotated data from auxiliary domains for target tasks. Linear Discriminative Analysis is also adopted to improve the discrimination of learned model and obtain higher accuracy. Moreover, we further provide a Discriminative Kernel Extreme Learning Machine with Cross-Domain Mean Approximation as the kernelization extension of DELM-CDMA. Some experiments are performed to investigate the proposed approach, and the result shows that DELM-CDMA and DKELM-CDMA could effectively extend ELM suitable for domain adaptation and outperform ELM and many other domain adaptation approaches. Smiles play an important role in social perception. However, it is unclear whether a similar role is played by static facial features associated with smiles. In dental science, maxillary dental protrusions increase the baring of the teeth and thus produce partial facial features of a smile even when the individual is not choosing to smile, whereas mandibular dental protrusions do not. We conducted three experiments to assess whether individuals ascribe positive evaluations to these facial features, which are not genuine emotional (...) expressions. In Experiment 1, participants viewed facial photographs of maxillary and mandibular protrusions and indicated the smiling and emotional status of the faces. The results showed that, while no difference was observed in participants’ perception of the presence of a smile across both types of dental protrusion, participants felt more positive to faces with maxillary than mandibular protrusions. In Experiment 2, participants completed an Implicit Association Test test measuring implicit attitudes toward faces with maxillary vs. mandibular protrusions. The results showed that participants had more positive attitude toward faces with maxillary than mandibular protrusions. In Experiment 3, individuals with either maxillary or mandibular protrusions completed the same IAT test to assess whether any preference would be affected by in-group/out-group preferences. The results showed both groups had more positive attitudes toward faces with maxillary protrusion, indicating that this preference is independent of the group effect. These findings suggest that facial features associated with smiles are viewed positively in social situations. We discuss this in terms of the social-function account. (shrink)

This study aims to examine the neural correlates of cognitive shifting during the Dimensional Change Card Sort Task task with functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Altogether 49 children completed the DCCS tasks, and 25 children passing all items were classified into the Switch group. Twenty children committing more than one perseverative errors were grouped into the Perseverate group. The Switch group had Brodmann Area 9 and 10 activated in the pre-switch period and BA 6, 9, 10, 40, and 44 in the post-switch (...) period. In contrast, the Perseverate group had BA 9 and 10 activated in the pre-switch period and BA 8, 9, 10 in the post-switch period. The general linear model results afford strong support to the “V-shape curve” hypothesis by identifying a significant decrease–increase cycle in BA 9 and 44, the neural correlations of cognitive shifting. Previously published studies have reported that 150 min of short-term monocular deprivation temporarily changes perceptual eye dominance. However, the possible mechanisms underlying monocular deprivation-induced perceptual eye dominance plasticity remain unclear. Using a binocular phase and contrast co-measurement task and a multi-pathway contrast-gain control model, we studied the effect of 150 min of monocular pattern deprivation in normal adult subjects. The perceived phase and contrast varied significantly with the interocular contrast ratio, and after MPD, the patched eye became dominant. Most importantly, (...) we focused on the potential mechanisms of the deprivation effect. The data of an averaged subject was best fitted by a model, which assumed a monocular signal enhancement of the PE after the MPD. The present findings might have important implications for investigations of binocular vision in both normal and amblyopic populations. (shrink)

Husserls Erweiterung des Willensbegriffs ist eine durchaus beobachtete, aber nicht hinreichend ernst genommene Transformation. Zixuan Liu untersucht in diesem Buch, wie und warum Husserl seinen Willensbegriff erweiterte und was für eine Bedeutung dieser erweiterte Willensbegriff für Husserls eigenes System und die Handlungstheorie haben kann. Zunächst wird Husserls Erweiterung des Willensbegriffs in sechs Richtungen differenziert. Der Erste Weltkrieg stellt sich als der historische Hintergrund dieser Transformation dar. Die Erweiterung liegt unter anderem an Husserls eigener Gedankenentwicklung und dem Einfluss durch andere Autoren. (...) Der Autor untersucht die Herausforderungen des erweiterten Willensbegriffs für Husserls eigenes System. Es ergibt sich die Intentionalität als eine einzigartige Beziehung, die sich nur für Sinngewinnung verantworten muss. Als eine Alternative zu Husserls klassischem intellektualistischem Stufenbau von Erkennen, Fühlen und Wollen argumentiert der Autor für eine aspektuale Ansicht zu dieser Trichotomie. Space and time are linguistic, words, and numerical descriptions that humans use to represent the domains and processes of human and material existence. They form the fundamental questions of human philosophical thought. Some 2500 years ago, the philosophy of the cosmic origins contemplated space and the existence within it. Aristotle’s philosophy of matter pulled human philosophical inquiry down from the heavens to the earth, initiating the exploration of material philosophy and material science (Russell, 2017). This shift set aside the concept (...) of space and the existence within space, treating time as a concrete existence (Liu, 2025a). Leaving behind the trap of Aristotelian material philosophy. Humanity then marched forward, probing into material science and material philosophy, until the advent of modern science—quantum mechanics and relativity—reached the pinnacle of material science. The resulting “theoretical contradictions” in these modern theories forced a renewed consideration of space and time. Humans have defined the terms “space” and “time,” but without clarifying what space and time truly are, we cannot resolve these theoretical contradictions in modern physics. This will hinder scientific progress and affect our understanding of existence and survival. Building upon six articles published in the UK discussing cosmic origins (Liu, 2024a) and five articles published in the US on the “theoretical contradictions” of quantum mechanics and relativity, as well as the author’s previously published books and all related articles (please see all the references), this paper continues the inquiry into these fundamental philosophical issues that humanity has created, Resolving the “theoretical contradiction” between quantum mechanics and relativity.
