This article discusses the influence of the Danish philosopher on Wittgenstein’s views on religion. It begins by presenting all the evidence of Wittgenstein’s interest in Kierkegaard that the author has found in the memoirs and letters of people who knew the Austrian philosopher. This is followed by selected ideas that make up Kierkegaard’s vision of Christianity, such as the limits of thought and language, Christian paradoxes, Christian faith as subjective truth, and the method of indirect communication. The final sections focus (...) on those of Wittgenstein’s remarks on religion that especially converge with the ideas of Kierkegaard described earlier. This article provides a general overview of the connections between the two thinkers’ statements on religion. Combined with knowledge of other works, it distinguishes between analogies that have already been thoroughly studied and those that require further, deeper investigation. (shrink)
