In several of our articles we have drawn analogies between inattentional blindness paradigms and misdirection. Memmert however, has criticized this analogy and urged for caution in assuming too much of a close relationship between these two phenomena. Here we consider the points raised by Memmert and highlight some misunderstandings and omissions in his interpretation of our work, which substantially undermine his argument. Debating the similarities and differences between aspects of misdirection and inattentional blindness is valuable and has the potential to (...) highlight the utility of these two phenomena. However, it is important not to be misdirected by subtle differences between particular instances of each phenomenon, at the expense of failing to detect the opportunities that these phenomena present for extending our understanding of attention and awareness. The beginnings of photographic astronomy in Sweden are taken as a case study of the incorporation of a new scientific technology. The introduction of photography during the late nineteenth century profoundly changed the way astronomers worked. Observational material became more mobile; photographic plates could be examined at a later date or transported to another location. Photography was presented in a rhetorical language, making it a truly objective way of observing the sky. Summary The aim of this paper is to explore relations between science and the public. Specifically, Swedish meteorology around 1900 and the rôle of media relations in the construction of a storm-warning system will be discussed. It is argued that science–public interaction can be a factor in the process of establishing priorities in science.

Metzger’s presentation develops from his concept of ‘The Third Culture’. This is an extension of C.P. Snow’s Two Cultures - that of the artist and that of the scientist - and the divisions between them. Metzger argues that this division has been replaced by a great deal of interaction; but that there is now a Third Culture which straddles generations, classes and income groups. It is exemplified by protesters at the world summits and represents a response of people who are (...) aware that the tools and technologies which are used to control us can also be manipulated in ways that could make oppressive regimes lose their grip. If technologies of control can be subverted, however, it is also important that the ambivalent nature of technology is recognized. Metzger points to two threats to the continued existence of humanity - species extinction and destruction from asteroid impact - the former a consequence of technology, the latter requiring technological innovation.
