Since the Supreme Court upheld the partial birth abortion ban in 2007, more U.S. abortion providers have begun performing intraamniotic digoxin injections prior to uterine dilation and evacuations. These injections can cause medical harm to abortion patients. Our objective is to perform an in-depth bioethical analysis of this procedure, which is performed mainly for the provider’s legal benefit despite potential medical consequences for the patient.

The article examines curatorial practice as an independent form of contemporary artistic expression. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of phenomenology, hermeneutics, relational aesthetics, visual studies, and the anthropology of modernity, it analyzes three curatorial projects by Elena Nashikian (known in professional sphere as Ellen Nash) – Fragile Angel, The Gate, and Mesozoic: Let’s Start Over. The study demonstrates that curatorial work extends beyond mediation between artist and viewer, forming autonomous conceptual structures in which space, light, and visual regimes function (...) as instruments of philosophical and aesthetic inquiry. Special attention is paid to themes of vulnerability, ethical encounter, liminality, cyclicality, and post-catastrophic imaginaries. The projects are explored as interconnected components of a unified authorial conception that proposes new models of perception and interaction within the context of cultural complexity and global transformation. Method or Methodology of the Study. The methodology of the study combines phenomenological analysis, visual theory, and relational aesthetics, allowing for an examination of curatorial practice as a form of authorial artistic expression. The research applies interpretative, comparative, and conceptual analysis to three projects by Ellen Nash, identifying the principles through which curatorial work generates modes of visibility and structures the viewer’s perceptual experience. Scientific Novelty and Conclusions. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the examination of curatorial art as a form of authorial philosophical-visual expression rather than merely a mediating practice. For the first time, three projects by Ellen Nash are analyzed as conceptually interconnected artistic structures in which the curator formulates her own modes of visibility, sensory logic, and scenographic solutions. The study demonstrates that curatorial strategies can place the viewer into states of darkness, light-based perception, or spatial thresholds, creating a field for interpretation and inner work. The findings show that curatorial expression can function as an autonomous research method and a conceptual framework for reflecting on transformations of contemporary sensibility. (shrink)

This essay analyses Hegel’s use of the metaphor of «the cross and the rose», not only in the Preface to the Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts, which all major interpretations refer to, but also in two other texts: Wer denkt abstrakt? of 1807 and the 1829 review of Schubart's and Garganico’s Über Philosophie überhaupt... In Wer denkt abstrakt? Hegel criticizes a sentimental, as equivalent to a «non concrete», interpretation of the figure; in the Preface he claims that «reason is the (...) rose in the cross of the present», assimilating the image to a platonic idea of State; in the review of 1829 he criticizes a naïve interpretation of the figure. In the light of these observations, it is possible to conclude that Hegel sees the figure as the specific image of the relation of the platonic and the critical element, typical of dialectical rationality. The Hegelian use of the figure thus results, in this perspective, by far more subtle than the one envisaged by its “political” interpretations. (shrink)

Review of Ramona Hosu, Poetry, Identity and Ideology – Early Twentieth-Century America (Cluj: Accent, 2010).

The aim of the paper is to examine Seneca’s self-portrait as depicted in his Letters to Lucilius. The first part deals with the place this collection of letters occupies in the context of ancient epistolary literature. It shows how it contributed to the introspective character of ancient philosophical prose. Introspection as a method of self-knowledge and self-creation is analyzed in the second part. The resulting vision of the identity of the author of Letters is neither unified, nor consistent: Seneca is (...) presented as a “man of many faces” in his life as well as in literature. (shrink)

In Latin America there are two models of constitutions - the liberal and the most stable Constitution of the Argentine Nation, drafted in 1853, (which was discussed in our previous article) and one of the most radical, comprehensive and unstable – the Constitution of the United Mexican States of 1917. Although both of them were constructed under the model of the US constitution with the influence of Spanish and French constitutionalism and local national traditions, the Argentine constitutionalism has developed on (...) the grounds of the American legal system, as the Mexican one still could not break with the civil law tradition. One of the signal developments in contemporary criticism over the past several years has been the ascendancy of the colonial paradigm. In conjunction with this new turn, Frantz Fanon has now been reinstated as a global theorist, and not simply by those engaged in Third World or subaltern studies. In a recent collection centered on British romanticism, Jerome McGann opens a discussion of William Blake and Ezra Pound with an extended invocation of Fanon. Donald Pease has used Fanon to open (...) an attack on Stephen Greenblatt’s reading of the Henriad and the interdisciplinary practices of the new historicism. And Fanon, and published interpretations of Fanon, have become regularly cited in the rereading of the Renaissance that have emerged from places like Sussex, Essex, and Birmingham.1My intent is not to offer a reading of Fanon to supplant these others, but to read, even if summarily, some of these readings of Fanon. By focusing on successive appropriations of this figure, as both totem and text, I think we can chart out an itinerary through contemporary colonial discourse theory. I want to stress, then, that my ambitions here are extremely limited: what follows may be a prelude to a reading of Fanon, but does not even begin that task itself.2 1. In this paper I apply an old problem of Quine's (the inscrutability of reference in translation) to a new style of theory about mental content (causal/nomological/informational accounts of meaning) and conclude that no "naturalization" of content of the sort currently popular can solve Quine's "gavagai" enigma. I show how failure to solve the problem leads to absurd conclusions not about one's own mental life, but about the non-mental world. I discuss various ways of attempting to remedy the accounts so as (...) to avoid the problem and explain why each attempt at solving the problem would take the information theorists further from their self-assigned task of "naturalizing" semantics. What importance does “race” have as a meaningful category in the study of literature and the shaping of critical theory? If we attempt to answer this question by examining the history of Western literature and its criticism, our initial response would probably be “nothing” or, at the very least, “nothing explicitly.” Indeed, until the past decade or so, even the most subtle and sensitive literary critics would most likely have argued that, except for aberrant moments in the history of criticism, (...) race has not been brought to bear upon the study of literature in any apparent way. Since T. S. Eliot, after all, the canonical texts of the Western literary tradition have been defined as a more or less closed set of works that somehow speak to, or respond to, “the human condition” and to each other in formal patterns of repetition and revision. And while most critics acknowledge that judgment is not absolute and indeed reflects historically conditioned presuppositions, certain canonical works do seem to transcend value judgments of the moment, speaking irresistibly to the human condition. The question of the place of texts written by the Other in the proper study of “literature,” “Western literature,” or “comparative literature” has, until recently, remained an unasked question, suspended or silenced by a discourse in which the canonical and the noncanonical stand as the ultimate opposition. In much of the thinking about the proper study of literature in this century, race has been an invisible quantity, a persistent yet implicit presence.This was not always the case, we know. By mid-nineteenth century, “national spirit” and “historical period” had become widely accepted categories within theories of the nature and function of literature which argued that the principal value in a great work of literary art resided in the extent to which these categories were reflected in that work of art Montesquieu’s De l’esprit des lois considered a culture’s formal social institution as the repository of its “guiding spirit,” while Giambattista Vico’s principi di una scienza nuova read literature against a complex pattern of historical cycles. Friedrich and August von Schlegel managed rather deftly to bring “both national spirit and historical period” to bear upon the interpretation of literature, as W. Jackson Bate has shown. But it was Hippolyte-Adolphe Taine who made the implicit explicit by postulating “race, moment, and milieu” as positivistic criteria through which any work could be read and which, by definition, any work reflected. Taine’s History of English Literature was the great foundation upon which subsequent nineteenth-century notions of “national literatures” would be constructed. In _Kindred Nature,_ Barbara T. Gates highlights the contributions of Victorian and Edwardian women to the study, protection, and writing of nature. Recovering their works from the misrepresentation they often faced at the time of their composition, Gates discusses not just well-known women like Beatrix Potter but also others—scientists, writers, gardeners, and illustrators—who are little known today. Some of these women discovered previously unknown species, others wrote and illustrated natural histories or animal stories, and still others educated women, (...) the working classes, and children about recent scientific advances. A number of women also played pivotal roles in the defense of animal rights by protesting overhunting, vivisection, and habitat destruction, even as they demanded their own rights to vote, work, and enter universities. _Kindred Nature_ shows the enormous impact Victorian and Edwardian women had on the natural sciences and the environmental movement, and on our own attitudes toward nature and human nature. The study of identity crosses all disciplinary borders to address such issues as the multiple interactions of race, class, and gender in feminist, lesbian, and gay studies, postcolonialism and globalization, and the interrelation of nationalism and ethnicity in ethnic and area studies. Identities will help disrupt the cliche-ridden discourse of identity by exploring the formation of identities and problem of subjectivity. When someone hosts a party, when governments choose an aid program, or when assistive robots decide what meal to serve to a family, decision‐makers must determine how to help even when their recipients have very different preferences. Which combination of people’s desires should a decision‐maker serve? To provide a potential answer, we turned to psychology: What do people think is best when multiple people have different utilities over options? We developed a quantitative model of what people consider desirable behavior, characterizing (...) participants’ preferences by inferring which combination of “metrics” (maximax, maxsum, maximin, or inequality aversion [IA]) best explained participants’ decisions in a drink‐choosing task. We found that participants’ behavior was best described by the maximin metric, describing the desire to maximize the happiness of the worst‐off person, though participant behavior was also consistent with maximizing group utility (the maxsum metric) and the IA metric to a lesser extent. Participant behavior was consistent across variation in the agents involved and tended to become more maxsum‐oriented when participants were told they were players in the task (Experiment 1). In later experiments, participants maintained maximin behavior across multi‐step tasks rather than shortsightedly focusing on the individual steps therein (Experiment 2, Experiment 3). By repeatedly asking participants what choices they would hope for in an optimal, just decision‐maker, and carefully disambiguating which quantitative metrics describe these nuanced choices, we help constrain the space of what behavior we desire in leaders, artificial intelligence systems helping decision‐makers, and the assistive robots and decision‐makers of the future. Religion is a disputed area in relation to both morality and politics. Similarly, while some argue that moral education should be based on a preferred religious reference point, others reject this as categorically wrong. Both these views are false, because based on a selective perception of the universal human context, a tendency also evident in other spheres. Typically, there are three constitutional responses to religion ‐ established singularity, secular pluralism and selective consensus ‐ each with its own consequences for moral (...) education. To be effective, moral education must take cognisance of religion in each national context. In England and Wales, the recent Education Reform Act provides a framework for both religious and moral education that is attentive to secular and multi‐faith reference points, as well as those specifically Christian. Nagging doubts over religion's threat to the autonomy of ethics can be removed, given recognition of the place of reason as a common ingredient in particular religious traditions and in the response of individuals within them. Moral education and political life alike should look to this source for enrichment and renewal. (shrink)

The importance of motivational beliefs and, more specifically, religion, is identified as central for both citizenship and citizenship education. Whether they take an expressly religious form, or appear in a purportedly more open form, such as faith or world view, beliefs are at the core of human being. The tendency to speak more of shared values than beliefs in the context of educating citizens is open to question – values are not necessarily any more universally agreed, since they too are (...) affected by beliefs. Moreover, the presumption of secularisation, that religious believing is fast disappearing, is itself now exposed as strangely dated. Beliefs, often explicitly religious beliefs, are fundamental in national constitutions. Thus, religion may inspire a critique of a nation's behaviour; religion will also need to be subject to critique. How to build an opportunity for understanding and critiquing beliefs into any public educational system is a major challenge. The provision for Religious Education (RE) in England is taken as an example of this challenge being directly addressed as a necessary complement to any separate policy for character education, citizenship education and/or moral education in whatever form they exist. RE is able to home in on the religious plurality which figures in national and international life. Understanding of the insights and contentions of religions in all their plurality is a source of illumination for citizens wherever they are in the world. (shrink)

This is a story of the intertwining of moral education with religious education in a professional lifetime. It is told episodically. Instead of the purported intellectual respectability of total separation of one from the other, even elimination of one by the other, it favours their mutual critique. It begins with strong sentiment, inspired in part by an early exposure to American Social Gospel thinking. It unwinds and rewinds to create a tapestry for lifespan research which considers how children and young (...) people begin an engagement with religion and ethics which will extend into their future lives. Alongside this is the development of a university curriculum in which Christianity is challenged by other faiths and philosophies, and equal attention is given to Social Ethics as to Religion. Empathy and mutual enrichment are prioritised throughout, and provide a procedural base for national ecumenical endeavour. Finally, it reflects on the moral learning which has taken place during this process, with implications for the Journal of Moral Education. (shrink)

The decolonization of science and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples are leading archaeologists to adopt a new praxis that is more collaborative and more respectful of Indigenous issues, considerations and perspectives. Despite the generally positive consequences emanating from this type of project, tensions can arise between the stakeholders when their needs and objectives do not concur. The fictive case study presented here illustrates the complexity of such situations and the ethical dilemmas that can arise from them.
