This essay explains some basic concepts about BDSM, and it responds to two important objections to it. The first is the psychological objection—that BDSM practitioners suffer from mental disorders—and the second is the ethical objection—that BDSM practitioners have morally compromised desires because of the kinds of activities they desire to participate in, especially ones that involve roles that dip into tortured oppressive histories (e.g., "rape" scenes, "master-and-slave" scenes). The paper argues that both objections fail, and, more specifically (...) focusing on the ethical objection, argues that BDSM desires are psychologically, conceptually, and phenomenologically different from their seeming counterpart real-life desires that are truly ethically defective. Finally, the paper argues that BDSM practitioners, in having to always understand, explore, and justify their desires (especially to a majority that is hostile to them), have an interesting chance to lead rich, flourishing lives. BDSM is no longer treated as a manifestation of the darkest twists of the human soul but rather as a sexual activity like many others. Moreover, the philosophy of sex and much of popular culture has come to embrace BDSM for its models of consent, exploration, and freedom. Yet celebrating BDSM without deeper reflection can obscure some serious moral issues. In this chapter, I present an overview of the moral issues raised by BDSM, and I argue (...) that it is reductive to see BDSM as a simple or straightforward model for how to practice egalitarian sex. Yet, BDSM communities grapple with issues of consent, autonomy, and power in important ways, which can help us think through broader issues in sexual ethics. In 2011, Fifty Shades of Grey, an erotic novel by British author E.L. James, took the publishing world by storm. This article examines the lack of a feminist backlash to the book by comparing it to The Story of O (1954) and the backlash that that book engendered. In addition to parsing the terms of the existentialism that underlies The Story of O, this article unpacks the neoliberal logic of Fifty Shades of Grey.

This book is a study of BDSM practices based on anthropological fieldwork (a mix of the following methods: participatory research, semi-structured interviews, autotheory) conducted among Polish BDSM practitioners between 2015 and 2020. Instead of focusing on organized kink communities (which are relatively weak in Poland), it instead foregrounds the practice of BDSM itself, and asks what are the conditions (social, cultural, and rhetorical) which make this practice at all possible. In doing so, it builds towards an argument (...) that BDSM practitioners rely on how our ways of understanding and categorizing sex and sexual activities consistently fail to properly describe the errancies of sexual desire in order to carve out a space of kink's possibility for themselves--and that BDSM practices themselves are both enabled by this, and are the means of such carving out. The author investigates a number of practices of contemporary Polish BDSM practitioners, ranging from the very act of attempting to define what BDSM even is all the way to consensually non-consensual simulated drownings. By analyzing them, they ask what relationships are produced through practice--both to other practitioners, as well as to more abstract concepts such as the public sphere, the sexual norm, or the oft-mythologized Western kink culture. In the process, the study also constantly returns to the question of what it means to both practice, as well as think about kink from the half-peripheral, Eastern European perspective. While the book refuses the demand that non-Anglophone authors should prioritize area studies over the production of "theory", it nonetheless locates and analyzes the practices and problems it describes within the specific geographic and cultural context of Poland. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in fields including queer theory, sexuality studies, and feminist theory. It could also appeal to cultural anthropologists more broadly, and people working with Central-Eastern European cultures. (shrink)

In the introduction, the core questions animating the book are outlined. First, the question of BDSM’s rhetorical, social, and political possibility is presented, and contrasted with the long-standing tendency to frame BDSM practices as conceptually impossible, based on self-deception, or otherwise representing an aberration of “proper” sexuality. Second, the problem of BDSM in contemporary Poland is highlighted by showing the persistent Western-centric bias in extant BDSM scholarship, as well as querying what a Polish perspective on the (...) practices of kink can add to the field of sexuality studies. Much of the existing philosophical literature on BDSM focuses on questions about the ethics of BDSM. But there is an underlying question here regarding the nature of BDSM, one which remains largely unaddressed. In this paper, I take that metaphysical question to be prior to the normative one. In other words: it will be important to have a clear view of what BDSM is before we go on to evaluate it. -/- This is a paper about (...) the nature of BDSM and BDSM activities: what they are like, what makes them unique, and the ways in which these activities might be valuable. Here, I work from the philosophical literature on games to analyze structured erotic encounters (or “scenes”) in BDSM. In the first half of the paper, I argue that BDSM scenes are games, and that understanding them in this way yields important insights into the roles of agency, autonomy, and value in BDSM. In the second half of the paper, I map points of connection between this view of scenes-as-games and the existing literature on BDSM in sexual ethics, in order to illuminate the ways in which a moral evaluation of BDSM scenes might proceed from this analysis. Aggressive techniques within casual sex encounters, such as taking sexual liberties without permission or ignoring rejection, can, perhaps unintentionally, complicate consent. Passive recipients may acquiesce out of fear, which aggressors may not realize. Some philosophers argue that social norms are sufficiently well known to make this misunderstanding unlikely. However, the chance of aggression leading to non-consensual sex, even if not great, is high enough that aggressors should work diligently to avoid this potentially grave result. I consider how this problem plays (...) out in the common mating ritual of hooking up. I argue that aggressive hook ups can only be permissible if they are modeled on BDSM encounters: the participants must obtain prior consent and prepare safe words for voiding that consent during the hook up. While this solution removes the spontaneity of aggressive sex, I argue that spontaneously aggressive hook ups with strangers cannot be permissible. (shrink)

In using the term “Black women,” I am referring to African American women for whom the history of chattel slavery in the Americas has produced the socio-historical conditions that uniquely inform Black female subjectivity and sexual politics. My use of this term is not to essentialize Black American womanhood; rather, like Black feminist scholar Patricia Hill Collins, I use the term to gesture to a Black women’s standpoint influenced by the condition and experience of gendered and racialized abjection, a “common experience of being Black women in a society that denigrates women of African descent.” Patricia Hill Collins, Black Feminist Thought: Knowledge, Consciousness and the Politics of Empowerment (London: Routledge, 1990), 22. That is, how the “slime”—a staining sludge of pain and violence—becomes a type of lubricant to stimulate sexual fantasies, access sexual pleasure, and heighten sexual desire. In this paper, I explore how Black women facilitate a complex and contradictory negotiation of pain, pleasure, and power in their performances in the fetish realm of BDSM.3 Situating my analysis in the context of hardcore BDSM Internet pornography and the controversial praxis of race play, I argue that BDSM is a critical site from which to reimagine the formative links between Black female sexuality and violence. This paper examines the interaction of law and policy-making on prostitution, with that of BDSM (bondage and discipline, sadism and masochism). Recent policy and legal shifts in the UK mark out prostitutes as vulnerable and in need of ‘rescue’. BDSM that amounts to actual bodily harm is unlawful in the UK, and calls to decriminalise it are often met with fears that participants will be left vulnerable to abuse. Where women sell BDSM sex, even more complex questions (...) of choice, exploitation, vulnerability, power and agency might be thought to arise. Does the combination of activities take two singular behaviours into the realm of compound harm? Are those who sell BDSM doubly vulnerable in a way that would justify criminal intervention? This paper argues that in imposing categories of vulnerability, the state engages in the heteronormative construction of risky sexual subjects who must be rehabilitated, responsiblised or punished. Through an examination of existing empirical studies on BDSM, the paper offers a feminist critique of the potential criminalisation of commercial BDSM and calls for more research on the lived experiences of those who buy and sell BDSM. The article analyses the role and moral force of consent in BDSM (Sado-masochistic and related practice). The view defended accepts consent as a key feature in sexual morality, and explains in detail the relation between consent and autonomy. In brief, it is argued that consent as a genuine extension of personal autonomy both justifies and draws limits to justifiable BDSM-practices: autonomy-undermining practices cannot be justified by appealing to autonomy. The paper discusses in detail the necessary conditions for consent (...) with an emphasis on relevant pitfalls in the context of BDSM and moves to an analysis of the prevalent “official” morality of the BDSM-community, expressed in the slogan “safe, sane, and consensual.” Finally, it draws attention to an un-discussed parallel between sexual morality and the concept of exit-rights as it is known from political philosophy. This essay explores the possibility of conceptualizing an asymmetrical ethics, with the vantage point that ethics is not only something required for asymmetrical relations but also something itself which requires asymmetry to arise. We expand on previous thinking on the importance of the asymmetrical to the ethical by elaborating three concrete examples of real-world praxis. In our summary of the theoretical background, we first show how Feminist ethics has developed from being a project aiming at the dismantling of the unjust (...) asymmetries of the social world into an appeal to not unjustly impose symmetry in a violent fashion. We then explicate Emanuel Levinas’ reconceptualization of the ethical attitude as an asymmetrical attitude of openness to the other, to then show how Adriana Cavarero develops this openness to the other into a cherishing of the singularity of life. We go on to introduce our own contribution, presenting the three examples of Pregnancy, Horse-riding, and BDSM as concrete situations where asymmetry must not only be ethical to be defensible but ethics must also be asymmetrical to be applicable. We conclude by discussing how the asymmetrical ethical dimension of these three examples offers new ways of conceptualizing responsibility and pleasure in relations of power. (shrink)

It is not enough to simply claim that one has every right to do whatever they desire to do because there is always the possibility of false empowerment. Through the presence of BDSM in mass media, it has caught enough attention for it to elicit influence and uneducated inclusion to their lifestyle. I attempt to revive the debate between the abolitionist versus the sex-positive because there is a necessity to provide a critical analysis of BDSM today in the (...) age of post-sex revolution. Despite of the backlash it received from the thinkers from different walks of field, it is an empowering act because there is mutual respect, condemnation of abuse, and recognition of one’s individuality despite of its coercive, violent, and possessive act. Against the tendency in BDSM scholarship to view the material side of kink with suspicion, this chapter instead argues for an expanded understanding of the role kinky toys as important non-human participants in BDSM play. Este tipo de masoquismo puede constituir prácticas culturales, como comer comida picante, practicar deportes de contacto o participar en grupos BDSM. "The Moral Psychology of Sexual Passion" brings together fourteen philosophers with diverse perspectives on the nature and value of “sexual passion,” a broad term referring to states of sexual attraction, desire, and arousal — states that underlie central types of sexual orientation. Using a variety of methodologies, each author focuses on some subset of these states and relates them to applicable moral, social, political or rational norms. Topics include how classifications of sexual passion reveal the classifier’s values; the conditions under (...) which “giving in” to one’s sexual impulses should take precedence over pursuing one’s longer-term goals; the possibility of there being an “agapic” form of lust similar to agapic love; the need to distinguish passionate from dispassionate desires in any adequate analysis sexual desire; how one’s awareness of sexual anatomy (along with certain contingencies of psychosocial development) may help to explain the personal significance of sexual attraction; how occurrences of sexual attraction are assessable as rational or irrational in much the same way as emotion occurrences are; the relative importance of the physiological, phenomenal, psychological, and social dimensions of sexual orientation and identity; how asexuality or "being ace" might be a sexual orientation like "being gay"; how to best understand the interest some autistic people have in BDSM; difficulties encountered by trans women having sexual relationships with nontrans men; the complex sexual dynamics found within sexual liberation movements; and how we may have a political right to sexual pleasure even if no individual has a duty to provide us with it. In two recent articles, Nicholas Dixon has argued that the intent to hurt and injure opponents which is essential to mixed martial arts makes the sport intrinsically immoral. Although bondage, domination, sadism, and masochism also involves the intentional infliction of pain and injury, Dixon argues that it is morally permissible in many cases. In this paper, I examine the principle underlying Dixon's differentiation of MMA and BDSM. I argue that, when properly elaborated, that principle does not in fact condemn (...) MMA as intrinsically immoral, but rather implies that the attitudes and actions of most autonomously consenting amateur MMA fighters and some autonomously consenting professionals are prima facie morally permissible. Masochism has recently been used to defend the controversial views that displeasure is not necessarily intrinsically undesired and not always bad. In this paper, I will argue against these arguments by showing that masochists do not intrinsically desire displeasure. To do this, I will draw in particular on the existing empirical literature on BDSM, which has been unduly overlooked so far by most philosophers.

The special issue you have in your hands arose from a somewhat peculiar premise: we preferred not to be very clear, beforehand, about what it was going to be about. It may seem a risky bet for a “thematic” issue, but the truth is that we only had a set of concerns related to the cultural imperative of monogamy that, on closer inspection, did not even seem to point in the same direction. We knew, for example, that we did not (...) want to focus on polyamorous relationships, open couples or free relationships, nor on ethical or political non-monogamy, consensual or non- consensual. Nor did we want to focus on the relational styles of swinger networks, kink sexualities or BDSM. Neither did we want to focus on the proposals of relationship anarchy. In the same way, we did not want to dedicate this issue to the legal life of monogamy, nor to the intimate relations between state, citizenship and mononormativity. We also decided not to limit our proposal to exploring the intersections - and tensions - that arise between resistance to monogamy and feminist, anti-racist or LGBTQIAPN+ struggles. Similarly, we did not feel it appropriate to devote this issue to something like the study of “non-monogamy” in Brazil, Abya Yala or the multiple souths of the planet, or to the possible coalitions between decolonisation and de-monogamisation of the world. It is true that we wanted to open up a space where we could talk about all of this, and other things. But, above all, we hoped that this issue would serve to raise a question that underlies these topics without ultimately being reduced to any of them. (shrink)

This chapter examines theories of the erotic put forth by Plato and Audre Lorde, L.H. Stallings, Ariana Cruz, and Amia Srinivasan. Plato’s Socrates suggests that we can tame the erotic and use it to achieve the greatest philosophical wisdom. Lorde argues that proper use of the erotic can lead us to ourselves and empower us. Stallings highlights how eros can empower, among others, trans and queer people to live out their “perverse” desires. Cruz suggests that carefully studying porn and (...) class='Hi'>BDSM allows us to “speak the unspeakable in black female sexuality.” She sees her work as continuing what Hortense Spiller calls “the retrieval of mutilated bodies.” Srinivasan seems to turn back the clock. She is careful not to suggest disciplining erotic desire—as any reader of Foucault would be, but like Plato, Srinivasan suggests we consider trying to reshape our desires. Transforming our desires could be an emancipatory project. Do we really want to desire what Tinder tells us is desirable? My goal is not to come to a definitive understanding of the erotic. My hope is that this survey of several different takes on the erotic will allow readers to come up with their own understanding. (shrink)

Work in body studies and theories of affect challenge the mind/body dualism where human action/behavior is shown to be an embodied, lived event. More specifically, bodily practices not only inform/shape human subjectivity but convey what language—words—often cannot. BDSM is one such practice that illuminates embodied subjectivities, where the flesh proves pivotal to one’s orientation to/with the world. In this article I explore women BDSMers who, as survivors of sexual violence, engage in BDSM rape play. BDSM rape play (...) foregrounds the flesh, exemplifying quite powerfully “bodily capacity,” one where bodily disintegration that occurred with the sexual assault is disrupted through bodily recuperation. This felt experience—the body as the source of insight—carries considerable weight, and should inform our thinking when it comes to feminist explorations of sexuality and those contentious and controversial practices such as BDSM. This paper presents the early findings of research into the experiences of pain for those who live with chronic pain and engage in BDSM (bondage and discipline, domination and submission, sadism and masochism), explored using a critical crip approach rooted in crip theory and feminist disability studies. The research took the form of a series of interviews with eight disabled people living with chronic pain who experience pain in their BDSM practices, developing a narrative of experiences. The majority (...) of those living with chronic pain, or who have diagnoses of chronic illnesses causing chronic pain, are women. Chronic pain is frequently assumed to be similar to acute pain; however, thinking through pain in terms of normativity and able-bodymindedness reveals the ableist structures that underpin normative attitudes towards pain and those who are in pain. Pain is understood as dehumanising—and thus the person living with chronic pain is understood as not human, abnormal, and disabled. The disabled body, the body in pain, is a horrifying object of abjection, and the non-disabled observer assumes that to be in pain is to suffer; therefore, living with chronic pain is understood as an ontological impossibility and must be stopped. BDSM is a series of practices forming a space in which the people living with chronic pain in this study are able to engage with their somatic experience in ways that do not expect normalcy, while being disabled and living with chronic pain gives them space to explore non-normative sexual practices. In this chapter, “kinky beers”—a type of a BDSM club events characteristic to Poland—are analyzed. The structure of those events provides an opportunity for a broader discussion of the way Polish kinksters experience and narrate their practices as either innocent hobbies or perverse tendencies, depending on the circumstances. Through that, the chapter then queries the tendency to view BDSM as inherently non-normative, and asks what alternatives exist for thinking sex that do not necessarily rely on the concepts of (...) normativity and perversion. Wonder Woman's co‐creator William Marston believed that sexual bondage was key to achieving a peaceful society. Though Marston intended Wonder Woman to provide an alternative to the masculinity of the superheroes of his day, Marston's vision remains relevant today. The behavior and attitude of Marston's Wonder Woman anticipated contemporary feminist philosophers' contributions to the ethics of care. Sexual activism (for, e.g., participants in the LGBT+ or BDSM communities) is prima facie commendable, at least for the liberal. However, it is unclear whether the end goal of such activism is toleration or recognition. The argument of this paper is that, on the level of authoritative political and social-moral rules, toleration is the only justifiable goal, while recognition may be pursued as an ideal outside the sphere of political and social-moral rules, that is, in civil society. This chapter traces the debate about the relationship between BDSM and historical and contemporary practices of torture. Starting with a scene of consensual non-consent simulated drowning narrated in one of the interviews, the chapter argues that attempts at clearly separating “BDSM” from “violence” expose the issues with centering procedurally understood affirmative consent as the sole line dividing “good sex” from “abuse”. Instead, working from the experiences of Polish BDSM practitioners, this chapter suggests a relationality-focused perspective, which centers (...) mutual trust, while also acknowledging that such a perspective may be difficult to deploy due to the intransparency of intimate relationships. Indecent Theology has provided both Feminist Theology and Liberation Theology with new contours for rethinking bodies, power, dominance, and submission. With regard to the logic of dominance that radically pushes the margins of the margins into a form of inexistent living, I suggest a material turn to rethink the contours that are evoked with Indecent Theology. Materialism has long stood as a philosophy opposing the overwhelming dominance of language and the poststructuralist emphasis that has emerged as the ‘linguistic turn’. Considering (...) ‘new materialism’ as a theoretical platform to reread Indecent Theology provides theologies and ethics an opportunity to re-imagine indecent methodologies through indecency, a sort of ethical perversion. I suggest an indecent turn in mobilizing materialism and kink as theories to reread indecent theology for a productive queer materialist sexual theology. The feminist liberation theology of Marcella Althaus-Reid pushes both feminism and liberation into new contours of power and submission and initiates new contours of queer sexuality into the discourse. When analysing Althaus-Reid’s work, we are brought to attention to the margins of the margins, an awareness of the struggle for power and control by those deemed less than. There are contours of power at and in the margins of the margins, those who occupy ‘bottom space’. From a kink/bdsm orientation, I propose to reread Alrhaus-Read’s feminist liberation theology as decolonial erotics that helps to generate a productive materialist queer sexuality. The overarching methodology of this article is a quasi-auto ethnographic investigation into the ways in which the contours of race, class, gender, sex, sexuality, and ability affect power and submission and in turn reframes both queer theology and queer sexuality that is rooted in the living out of a very particular theology and ethics, which is rooted in queer relating. Theology can neither materialize in a vacuum nor in isolation. An indecent turn to a queer sexual theology that is rooted in a queer relationality demands attention to the interdependence of queer relating that is materialized through the interdependency of the growing queer desires of bodies, power, dominance, and submission. By asking “where” BDSM is practiced, and what its “proper” place is in the life of Polish kinksters, it proceeds to show the degree to which the need to keep BDSM sectioned off “normal” and “everyday” life defines the experiences of kink in contemporary Poland. Subsequently, building on the classic concept of the “epistemology of the closet” by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, this chapter introduces the (...) notion of the “logic of the bedroom”: a framework that condemns sexuality to a particularly defined private spaces, while simultaneously producing conditions for sex acts to leak out of the “bedroom” and into the “everyday” life of kinksters. This article combines in-depth interviews and Karen Barad's work on materiality to think about the ways in which the materiality of blood might be understood in relation to sociality and blood-borne virus prevention among BDSM (bondage and domination, dominance and submission and sadomasochism) body modification practitioners in Sydney, Australia. In doing so, it confronts questions of how the materiality of blood can be theorized in ways that neither presume a fixed, a priori ontological status or essence, nor exclude it (...) from an active role in the production of realities. In taking account of both its co-constitutive role in practice, and its figurative power (as flow) in understanding the mind/body, discourse/materiality conjunctions at work in BDSM body modification practice, we aim to illuminate further the imbrication of materiality and meaning, and generate a more complex and fruitful account of blood for the purposes of blood-borne virus prevention and education. Andrea Wood turns our attention to lesbian sex and romance in comics, a genre that has long captivated lay readers and is gaining popularity in academic circles. Rachel Lumsden analyzes Ethel Smyth’s 1913 musical composition “Possession,” an ode to same-sex intimacy displaying a “sonic meld” of (...) passion, desire, and political commitment. Sharmila Lodhia’s account of Nina Paley’s film Sita Sings the Blues considers how a sexually charged anitmated representation of a traditional epic can spur battles over cultural authenticity. Ariane Cruz examines how sexual pleasure presses against racist histories in a study on black women and BDSM. Whether sexuality is policed, as Chloë Taylor explores in her article, or the policing of sexuality is shunned, as Lynn Comella addresses in her review essay, it is clear that the grip of sexual politics on women ’s sexual lives is strong. Wang Zheng’s News and Views piece recounts recent global feminist tactics used to release five young feminists jailed in China, an urgent reminder about how women’s bodies are policed in violent ways. We begin this issue with Chloë Taylor’s essay reflecting on how sexology and psychiatry function to represent female desire in narrow ways. Taylor explores how female sexual dysfunction is constructed in sexology and psychiatric practice and locates this as part of a longer history of rendering selected bodies and sexual practices as deviant. Her analysis is a valuable rejoinder to the ever-expanding grip of psychiatry on the ordering—and disordering—of women’s bodies and sexuality. The line between normal and abnormal is always shifting, but its constant is how it maneuvers and is maneuvered to control female sexual desire. Taylor’s argument moves toward a non-normalizing feminist sexology that can interrogate sexual practice and function without rendering any as “right” or “wrong.” 256Preface Andrea Wood also turns to female sexuality, specifically lesbian sex, love, and romance, in her article on comics as a literary genre. Lesbian romance comics, Wood argues, offer a different discursive lens for “making the invisible visible.” Using queer theory to interrogate romantic depictions of lesbian sex and sexuality, she explores how the visual narrative form of comics allows for a different and politically compelling depiction of lesbian identity and sexual activity. Although lesbian romance and same-sex desire has been an interest of many feminist scholars, few have examined the visual field of lesbian comics—a genre, Wood insists, that demonstrates resistance to what Adrienne Rich identified as “compulsory heterosexuality.” Rachel Lumsden draws our attention to composer Ethel Smyth’s understudied song “Possession.” The song is a rumination on what it means to possess something or someone, and what it means to be possessed ; it is also a song that Smyth dedicated to Emmeline Pankhurst, her political comrade as well as her close friend and muse. Lumsden reads the song as a creative, strategically ambiguous “ode to an intimate female relationship,” a tribute to the respect, affection, and tenderness that Pankhurst and Smyth shared. Rather than reveal the “truth” of Smyth’s relationship with Pankhurst, Lumsden instead invites readers to consider the “sonic meld” of “Possession” as a space through which “themes of desire, activism, eroticism, solidarity, and sacrifice coalesce and congeal ” and as a site through which Smyth narrated her experiences, passions, desires, and political commitments. Sharmila Lodhia engages the controversy surrounding Nina Paley’s re-telling of the Ramayana in her film Sita Sings the Blues, which some critics have deemed “offensive,” “insulting,” and a “desecration of the Ramayana and the Hindu faith.” Lodhia treats Paley’s film—which positions Sita rather than Ram as the story’s protagonist, deploys animation and myriad narrator perspectives, fuses Paley’s own story with Sita’s story, and sets the story to a 1920s blues soundtrack—as a productive “body of critique about the epic’s central teachings on virtue, righteousness, and idealized gender roles.” By situating Paley’s retelling of the Ramayana in the context of numerous and varied Ramayana retellings, Lodhia reveals that Sita Sings the Blues is a “creative... Within the past twenty years, contemporary Pagan leaders, progressive Christian and Goddess theologians, advocates for queer and BDSM communities, and therapeutic bodyworkers have all begun to speak forcefully about the sacredness of the body and of touch. This is a review and critical commentary on Michael Plaxton's 2015 book, Implied Consent and Sexual Assault, in which he proposes that the legal definition of sexual consent be amended to permit sexual partners to define the terms and conditions of sexual consent in accordance with private "normative commitments" between themselves. The proposed "reform" is intended to permit an individual to agree to be a party to sexual activity that would otherwise constitute sexual assault under Canadian law. For reasons explained (...) in the review, this reviewer concludes that Plaxton's proposal and the rationale he presents in support of its adoption are unpersuasive. (shrink)

In this paper, I argue that many violent sexual fantasies are not vicious. In the first part of this article, I sketch out the nature of violent sexual fantasies and note that many people regularly have them. I then argue many violent sexual fantasies are not vicious. My argument strategy is to explore what makes an attitude vicious and then to note that the vice-making feature need not be present in such fantasies and is in fact probably not present in (...) many of them. This paper draws a moral comparison between technologically facilitated rape simulations and rape simulations between humans. Specifically, it investigates a previously unexplored ethical puzzle: while many regard the use of ‘rapebots’—sex robots designed specifically for rape simulations—as morally impermissible, the practice of consensual non-consent (CNC), i.e. consensual rape role-play between human partners, appears less troubling. Yet, both are instances of rape simulations where all individuals capable of granting or withholding consent do consent. Are rapebot use and CNC, therefore, morally equivalent? (...) I argue that they are not. Although rapebot use and CNC share similar content, they differ structurally: the former involves a solitary individual enacting fantasies unilaterally, while the latter occurs within a relational framework, foregrounding consent, negotiation, and respect. To explain why this structural difference matters morally, I introduce the mechanism of contextual negation by moral opposition. This mechanism posits that simulations of wrongdoing can be morally mitigated when their context explicitly affirms the values the simulated act would violate. While this can apply to CNC, it necessarily fails for rapebot use. Therefore, although some cases of CNC are morally permissible, the use of rapebots is always impermissible. This argument has broader implications for the ethics of technologically facilitated simulations. (shrink)

In this article, the authors take up the historical figure of Dr Betty Paërl, who has surprisingly turned up in very different kinds of specialised archives. The white mathematics professor was located in IHLIA LGBT+ Heritage, the largest queer heritage collection in Europe, as a notable SM sexpert and spokesperson on transgender politics, and also found during archival research into the anti-(neo)colonial struggles of Suriname against the Dutch. Upon closer inspection of the materials, the authors find the recurrent image/item of (...) the whip that presses them to carefully think through how the archive of Dr Paërl casts light on a history that Katherine McKittrick calls being ‘in the shadow of the whip’. The article aims to combine an analysis of these versions of the whip in different visual and discursive registers to detect the liberatory politics underlying her activisms. To do so, the authors develop the intersectional model of the kaleidoscope employed by Dutch Black, migrant and refugee (BMR) feminist theorists to grasp the shifting patterns of power that Paërl battled and embodied as an activist of the anticolonial struggle, for sex workers’ rights, for kinky sex and for transgender people. This is all the more important in the historical study of transgender visual materials that most often arrive in archives via medical and police photography or pornographic materials. The historical researcher, the article argues, should be wary of (re)producing a static vision that would reduce transgender figures to sex and gender politics, or eclipse a vision of trans politics that dilates beyond sexuality.
