Abstract

This chapter concludes the relatively complex metaphilosophical argument of the book—an argument integrating pragmatic naturalism and transcendental inquiry in our search for an appropriate philosophical articulation of the human aspiration of transcendence—by offering a self-critical reflection on pragmatism as a methodology pursuing harmonization or reconciliation of extremes. While this conception of pragmatism as a middle-ground option is needed in many areas of philosophy, it should not be uncritically accepted but must itself be subjected to critical pragmatist and transcendental evaluation. Examples drawn from both philosophy of religion and politics are used to illuminate the metaphilosophical significance of the matter.
