Abstract

This chapter proposes initial solutions for safeguarding intelligent machines and robots by drawing upon the well-established framework of international human rights legislation, typically used to protect vulnerable groups. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, for instance, extends the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to the context of disability. Similarly, the chapter advocates for the development of a Universal Convention for the Rights of AI Systems to protect the needs and interests of advanced intelligent machines and robots that may emerge in the future. The aim is to provide a foundation and guiding framework for this potential document.
