Abstract

The purpose of this contribution is to highlight how Michel de Certeau's travels in Latin America in the 1960s and 1970s represented a decisive—and still little-known—turning point in the evolution of his thinking, his writing, and his social activism, and how these three aspects of his life were closely intertwined. In particular, we attempt to show how four concepts fundamental to Certeau's entire work—place and space, strategy and tactics—were developed during this period and subsequently applied in very different fields. This investigation remains open for further research.
