Living systems routinely act before outcomes are known. Physiologists describe anticipatory regulation and allostatic adjustment; immunologists study early threat detection and trained memory; evolutionary ecologists analyze bet-hedging and phenotypic diversification; microbiologists show how robust adaptive control emerges from simple network architectures. Each of these literatures documents mechanisms by which organisms commit to action under irreducible uncertainty. Yet the shared structural pattern is rarely named as such, because each subfield describes it in domain-local terms. This paper argues that commitment under uncertainty (...) is not one adaptive strategy among many but a recurrent structural requirement of viability. Any self-maintaining system operating under changing conditions must instantiate mechanisms that bias action before certainty is available and correct that action through feedback afterward. To name this requirement, the paper introduces Biological Faith Systems: the distributed, embodied, feedback-corrigible architecture by which living systems proceed when proof arrives too late. The term does not import religious or metaphysical content; it marks the structural fact that action must precede justification in systems that cannot afford to wait. The framework is grounded across five mechanism families—allostatic regulation, stress-response cascades, immune anticipation, bet-hedging, and robust microbial adaptation—and positioned relative to active inference, autopoiesis, and allostasis. Three testable predictions are stated: a recurrent timing asymmetry in which action precedes resolution, constraint-sweep hysteresis as a residue of commitment, and phylogenetic depth of commitment architectures below cognition and nervous systems. If these predictions fail, the framework should be revised or abandoned. If they hold, biology has a structural lens for seeing what its subfields have long studied in pieces. (shrink)

For decades, affective science has remained divided by two competing ontological paradigms: Basic Emotion Theory and Constructed Emotion Theory. Basic Emotion Theory, derived from Darwinian evolutionary perspectives, asserts that a finite set of discrete, evolutionarily conserved emotions are hardwired into human neurobiology, manifesting as universal, immutable physiological and facial patterns. Conversely, Constructed Emotion Theory argues that emotions are not biological constants but are emergent, highly subjective mental constructs synthesized by the brain in real-time using predictive allostasis, sensory inputs, and (...) culturally acquired conceptual categories. This deep conceptual divide presents a fundamental challenge to contemporary researchers: how can a unified psychological model reconcile the existence of universal, biologically conserved affective capacities with the highly individualized, culturally mediated construction of everyday emotional experiences?. The Core Emotion Framework (CEF) seeks to resolve this dichotomy through its structural-constructivist architecture. Rather than defining emotions as static, post-hoc semantic labels—such as "anger" or "sadness"—the CEF reframes human affective experience as an emergent sequence of ten irreducible, universal functional operators, or "primal powers". These operators represent somatic-cognitive capacities that occur prior to language, acting as the raw materials from which the brain constructs highly nuanced emotional states. Affective science remains divided between biological essentialism and constructionist accounts of emotion, creating a long standing theoretical impasse. The Core Emotion Framework (CEF) proposes a structural constructivist resolution by modeling human affect as the dynamic interaction of ten universal somatic cognitive operators organized across the Head, Heart, and Gut centers. This manuscript synthesizes the CEF’s ontological foundations, formal operator taxonomy, and Phase 1 psychometric validation results, demonstrating that operator-level processes provide a more precise account of affective variability than typological or (...) discrete-emotion models. Exploratory factor analysis reveals coherent cross center coordination patterns, while confirmatory factor analysis exposes a model fit paradox in which excellent absolute fit coexists with depressed incremental indices. A mathematical analysis shows that this paradox arises from population-level heterogeneity, operator dominance portfolios, and scenario specific residual covariance—features predicted by the CEF’s process-based architecture. The framework is then reconciled with the Component Process Model, the Theory of Constructed Emotion, and Basic Emotion Theory, showing that each captures different levels of granularity within the same underlying operator dynamics. Lisa Feldman Barrett’s theory of constructed emotion builds the human being from the body upward: interoceptive prediction, concept-driven categorization, and the regulation of the body budget (allostasis) together construct emotion, perception, and the self. This article argues that the theory, however powerful as an account of how experience is assembled, forecloses the philosophical self (Φ) — the normative, meaning-making, value-determining faculty. Two results are proven. The Categorization Gap Theorem shows that no sequence of predictive categorizations and free-energy minimizations entails (...) any conclusion about worth, because the descriptive is conservative over the normative (Hume’s Law; Moore’s open question); even the “value” optimized in the free-energy framework denotes expected reward, not axiological worth. The Minimal Completion Theorem shows that the philosophical self is the necessary, sufficient, minimal, and unique repair of this incompleteness. The paper distinguishes Barrett’s foreclosure from Damasio’s: where Damasio omits Φ by silence, Barrett forecloses it by absorption, importing the vocabulary of Φ — concept, meaning, construction — and redefining each as a psychological (Ψ) operation. The constructed self is thereby shown to be Damasio’s autobiographical self generalized to the whole person, and the philosophical self is identified as the faculty that judges and re-authors what the brain has built. The correction is consilient, not eliminative: it restores value-determination to the center of human becoming while preserving Barrett’s constructionist neuroscience. (shrink)

Since Cannon, inspired by Bernard’s discussion of the conditions required for free and independent life, introduced the term homeostasis, many have embraced it as the main theoretical principle guiding physiology and medicine. Nonetheless, critics have argued that homeostasis is too limiting and have advanced a variety of alternative concepts such as heterostasis, rheostasis, and allostasis. We argue that the critics target a much narrower understanding of homeostasis put forward by the cyberneticists and that Bernard and Cannon embraced a far (...) broader understanding that can accommodate the alternatives advanced by the critics and provide an integrated theoretical framework for physiology. The motivational force of pain is undeniable. But what pain commands us to do, how we might satisfy this command, and if our experience of pain is inherently linked to suffering are far murkier topics. This paper brings together empirical studies of pain reprocessing during advanced meditation, the rise of allostatic paradigms to account for biological self-regulation, and the philosophy of pain in the classical Sanskrit philosophical tradition of Pratyabhijñā Śaivism to argue that pain is an allostatic imperative to adapt (...) a part of one’s body. We theorize two components of an allostatic response, heterostatic and homeostatic, that work in tandem to address pain as an allostatic command. Homeostatic responses are error-corrective in that they seek to protect an organism by returning to a previously stable steady state. Heterostatic responses are anticipatory in that they seek to better prepare an organism to meet future challenges by proactively shifting to a new steady state. We note that an organism’s successful adaptation to its environment depends not just on error-correction, but also on anticipatory change. We theorize that a broad range of affect properly accompanies pain. We propose potential directions for empirically developing this model. This paper aims to break through the mainstream paradigm of "brain-centrism" and provide a novel philosophical model for the heart-brain relationship. Utilizing "Benchmark-Based Perspectivism" as a meta-theoretical tool, the author critically deconstructs the symbolic system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) while reconstructing its core concepts (such as Jing, Shen, Hun, Po) into a systematic functional language based on a "Five-Elements-Two-Relationships" framework. Building on this, the paper proposes a revolutionary hypothesis: the "Heart" is the operational core of consciousness and emotion (CPU), (...) while the "Brain" is the organ responsible for thinking, regulation (OS), and memory. This hypothesis is grounded in a reinterpretation of classical texts like the (《灵枢》, LS) and (《素问》, SW), and also exhibits structural similarities with recent discoveries in contemporary neuroscience (e.g., predictive coding, allostasis, heart rate variability), thereby arguing for its intrinsic plausibility. Ultimately, the paper constructs the analogous model of the "Heart as CPU, Brain as OS." Interoception – the perception of the body’s internal state – has received growing attention in the past few decades. Yet, its conceptual foundations remain underexplored. This paper aims to expose conceptual limitations in dominant accounts of interoception, which are typically either viscerocentric or internalist. I argue that current philosophical definitions of interoception fail to accommodate the bidirectional feedback loop between olfaction and metabolic regulation. Olfactory cues can influence metabolic processes, and metabolism can recalibrate olfactory perception from its earliest stages. Towards (...) this goal, I open three lines of reflection. First, interoception should not be understood as purely descriptive; it involves a prescriptive, regulation-oriented dimension. Second, its functional scope extends beyond homeostasis to encompass allostasis, integrating environmental cues into predictive bodily control. Third, the sharp divide between interoception and exteroception is questionable and warrants further assessment, given that sensory processes, including olfactory ones, regulate and are regulated by the body’s internal milieu. While these considerations remain open questions, they call for revising existing models to better capture interoception’s integration into broader architectures of bodily regulation. (shrink)

A state-primitive ontology can reach retained inner asymmetry without yet reaching hosted internal organization. Retained inner asymmetry preserves a line-specific inner/outer difference through bounded local persistence, but it does not yet govern admissible internal participation. It does not explain how effects, alterations, perturbations, materials, records, damages, repairs, or prior consequences become internal to a continuing regime rather than merely present, enclosed, stored, impressed, or externally registered. The missing transition is the hosted-environment bridge: the conversion of belonging-possible asymmetry into continuation-governed participation. (...) The argument developed here begins from the state-primitive handoff: retained inner asymmetry is belonging-possible, not belonging-governed. A boundary does not by itself settle belonging, because what lies inside a boundary may be admissible, intrusive, damaging, tolerated, transformed, suppressed, rejected, repaired, incorporated, or retained. A hosted environment is therefore not a place where things happen. It is a continuation-governed regime in which participation can count, fail, be transformed, incorporated, repaired, retained, carried, suppressed, demoted, or re-entered under regime-specific conditions. Hosted internal organization is the stronger case in which the regime’s continuation-carrier becomes substantially internalized through condition-bearing interiority, protected internal degrees of freedom, regulated mutability, repair-capable successor-continuity, internal carrying, relation-space positioning, and recoverable latency. The argument proceeds by necessity: retained inner asymmetry is insufficient without governed participation; boundary-mediated belonging is insufficient without continuation-carriage; proto-hosting is insufficient without condition-bearing interiority; condition-bearing interiority is insufficient without regulation; regulation is insufficient without protected ways of changing; mutability is insufficient unless change remains carryable without regime collapse; failure handling is insufficient unless disruption can become valid successor-continuity; retention is insufficient unless retained consequence conditions later standing; carrying is insufficient for recoverability unless retained consequence becomes relation-space positioned; recoverable latency is insufficient for memory unless retained significance becomes re-recruitable, revisable, and reconstructively usable. Biology supplies the richest known historical realization of hosted internal organization, but it does not define hosted organization universally. Protocells, autocatalytic networks, immune tolerance, microbiota, wound repair, homeostasis, allostasis, archives, simulations, formal systems, artificial memory architectures, and institutional-economic regimes function as pressure cases for rank discipline. The bridge ends at recoverable hosted organization capable of downstream specialization. Memory begins only where recoverable hosted significance becomes trace-capable. Cognition begins later still, where retained and externally incorporated histories become available for taking-as, interpretation, planning, expectation, decision, and action-guiding orientation. This article derives from the Buddhist Nikāya Suttas the idea that fear has an intentional object that is best analysed in anticipatory terms. Something is feared, I argue, if construed as dangerous, where to construe something as dangerous is to anticipate it will cause certain unwanted effects. To help explain what this means, I appeal to the concept of formal objects in the philosophy of emotions and to predictive processing accounts of perception. I demonstrate how this analysis of fear can (...) do exegetical work in the context of the Nikāya Suttas, and respond to philosophical issues concerning the relation between the intentional and anticipatory dimensions of fear; the relevant anticipated effects of feared objects; and whether fearing subjects necessarily know they anticipate unwanted effects. I also draw an analogy to allostatic sensations to engage issues concering how the anticipatory dimension of fear relates to the motivational. (shrink)

Major theories of consciousness explain important aspects of reportability, integration, or inference, yet none jointly accounts for three persistent facts: wakeful experience feels continuously present; effortful agency waxes and wanes with uncertainty rather than raw computational load; and most cognition proceeds without reportable awareness. Affective Control under Uncertainty (ACU) proposes a two-level architecture that separates consciousness from selfhood while explaining their functional coupling. Level 1 consists of affective control awareness: intrinsically valenced monitoring of regulatory viability under uncertainty, sustained as a (...) standing readiness condition during wakefulness. Level 2 consists of self-modeling under uncertainty: transient, metabolically costly integration recruited when unresolved policy competition under differential affective stakes and temporal constraint forces categorical commitment. This recruitment is formalised as self-model recruitment intensity (SMRI), a graded control variable predicted to scale with policy entropy multiplied by affective variance under temporal forcing. ACU explains continuous presence without constant self-reference, effort scaling with uncertainty rather than prediction error magnitude, and the dissociation between vivid awareness and attenuated self-experience in flow, meditation, sleep, anaesthesia and depersonalisation. It advances falsifiable predictions concerning neural dynamics, pharmacology, development, comparative cognition, and artificial systems, and argues that phenomenality is identical with globally integrated, intrinsically valenced viability control rather than an additional property layered onto computation. By distinguishing baseline affective monitoring from transient self-model recruitment, ACU offers a unified control-theoretic account of presence, agency and their graded deployment under uncertainty. I claim that pain is best explained as a type of personal experience and the bodily response during pain is best explained in terms of a type of mechanical neurophysiologic operation. I apply the radical philosophy of identity theory from philosophy of mind to the relationship between the personal experience of pain and specific neurophysiologic mechanism and argue that the relationship between them is best explained as one of type identity. Across every domain of human life — law, politics, economics, culture, and personal behavior — outcomes are driven by the same underlying architecture: belief, power, and behavior. Yet no unified framework exists that explains how these fundamentals operate, what biological forces shape them, or how they produce meaning. This thesis proposes a natural‑law‑based model that identifies the universal variables governing human action. Existing theories of meaning rely on cultural, religious, or philosophical assumptions. None provide a biologically grounded, universally applicable structure (...) that explains how meaning emerges from the interaction of natural law and human fundamentals. This thesis identifies three fundamentals — belief, power, and behavior — and demonstrates how they are shaped by a set of biological derivatives operating under the constraints of natural law. Meaning is not treated as a metaphysical truth, but as an emergent property of this system. A unified behavioral framework has implications for governance, corporate leadership, negotiation, legal reasoning, and social stability. By grounding human action in natural law rather than ideology, this model provides a consistent basis for decision‑making across institutions and communities. The purpose of this thesis is to define the fundamentals, identify the biological derivatives that shape them, and demonstrate how meaning emerges as a structural output of the system. The Core Emotion Framework (CEF) proposes a structural constructivist account of human adaptation grounded in ten functional psychological operators distributed across the Head, Heart, and Gut centers. This paper presents a comprehensive psychometric evaluation of the CEF using a 100 item, scenario based instrument validated across a culturally diverse sample. Reliability analyses demonstrate strong internal consistency for most operators (α=.70-.85), while exploratory factor analysis reveals coherent functional clusters such as executive control, somatic mobilization, and passive acceptance. A confirmatory factor analysis (...) yields an excellent absolute fit (RMSEA≈.05) but poor incremental fit (CFI/TLI<.70), a paradox explained by genuine individual differences in operator hierarchies and the mathematical properties of high complexity models. The Core Emotion Framework (CEF) was recently validated through a large-scale, scenario-based psychometric study demonstrating that its ten functional operators constitute reliable, structurally coherent units of human adaptive behavior. The Phase 1 findings confirmed strong internal consistency across operators, theoretically meaningful factor clusters, and a mathematically interpretable RMSEA–CFI paradox arising from genuine individual differences in operator hierarchies. With the empirical architecture established, the next stage of development requires expanding the CEF beyond psychometric confirmation toward mechanistic modeling, clinical interpretation, and translational (...) application. The present paper fulfills that role. It formalizes the CEF as a computational-somatic system, articulates the dynamics of operator entanglement and pathological fusion, maps operator configurations onto stress physiology and neuroendocrine patterns, and outlines engineering specifications for hardware-assisted interventions. In doing so, this work positions the CEF as a unified framework capable of integrating cognitive, somatic, clinical, and computational perspectives. It also provides a structured roadmap for Phase 2 research, ensuring that future empirical studies build systematically on the validated operator foundation. This paper develops a unified structural constructivist ontology of affect by integrating Constraint Theory, the Core Emotion Framework (CEF), and contemporary neurobiological models of interoception and predictive processing. Constraint Theory provides the foundational metaphysics: determinacy arises through exclusion relations, distinguishing type level openness from token level actualization. The CEF builds on this ontology by modeling emotions as dynamic sequences of ten irreducible somatic operators distributed across cephalic, cardiac, and enteric control centers, each functioning as an active transformation of the interoceptive (...) landscape rather than a passive feeling state. This architecture dissolves the historical cognitivist vs. neo Jamesian divide by showing that emotional episodes are neither propositional judgements nor brute bodily feelings, but unified constraint propagation processes that are simultaneously intentional, embodied, and evolutionarily conserved. The framework further formalizes affective dynamics using quantum like contextuality, Hilbert space representations, and Kuramoto synchronization models to capture non separable operator fusions under chronic dysregulation. By grounding emotional experience in a single, coherent ontology spanning metaphysics, psychology, and neuroscience, the paper resolves Deigh’s “warm chest, cold feet” dilemma and establishes a mathematically explicit foundation for both natural and synthetic affective systems.
