Four issues or problems philosophers should be concerned about when doing philosophy.

Let us denote by ‘methodological normativism’ the thesis that part of the business of philosophical methodology consists in examining or influencing norms understood to determine, at any given time, methods actually used in philosophy. For the value of methodological normativism to be adequately recognized, there should exist a relatively standard “system” in which one evaluates competing views on how, and why, philosophical methods may be reformed. No such system appears to be standardly recognized, and the consequence is an unpalatable (...) prolongation of debates on norms philosophers, as a matter of fact, follow in implementing philosophical methods. I will seek to develop, in what follows, a contextualist principle of arbitrating competing methodological proposals in meta-philosophy using insights well-entrenched in meta-metaphysics. In other words, I seek to discuss a possible way, afforded by meta-metaphysics, of systematizing methodological normativism. (shrink)

This paper develops a placement-first argument from actual intelligible reality to necessary self-intelligible actuality. It argues that actuality and intelligibility cannot be treated as merely received all the way down, nor responsibly called brute or primitive without specifying their metaphysical placement. The central distinction is between finite profile and concrete obtaining: a determinate or even necessarily intelligible profile is not thereby actual. From this distinction, the paper argues that finite actual intelligible reality requires an unreceived source of actuality-intelligibility. It then (...) develops the implications of this source as Divine Mind and Divine Will. Primary intelligibility cannot be merely truth-available to another, since there is no deeper interpretive field beyond the primary; it must be intrinsically self-disclosive. Likewise, finite contingent actuality cannot proceed from the necessary source by necessity without collapsing into necessary emanation, nor can it be finally brute while remaining received. The bridge from necessary self-intelligible actuality to finite contingent actuality is therefore intelligible and non-necessitated: will-shaped. The final section considers how this metaphysical result supplies a disciplined grammar for Nicene Trinitarian doctrine. (shrink)

ABSTRACT One increasingly reads about different aspects of the death of philosophy. One reason or cause being its institutionalization, as just another academic discipline, while research universities demand their tenured professionals to produve endless streams of really irrelevant publications, resulting in dealing with more detailed, microscopic issues and fabricated ‘problems’. The professionalization of philosophers created other problems of this socio-cultural practice. The dying out of philosophy is not only cased by external social and cultural factors, but also by (...) internal factors such as its methods and those concerning its subject-matter. I have explored the above in the context of meta-philosophy. In the process I also investigated the nature, the subject-matter and theories of philosophy of art, aesthetics and theory of art. It is mostly about these explorations of art that the contents of this piece is concerned with. All this is an exercise with words as the verbal means are the traditional instruments of doing philosophy. These tools not only enable the doing of philosophy but also creates limitations and limits to philosophizing. This will remain the case until the discourse develops other (for example visual, auditory, computational, etc) means to develop its many levelled and multi-dimensional practice - and in the process questions and overcomes its anthropo-centered bias. This paper develops a phenomenological and biologically grounded account of human consciousness centered on structural interconnection and meta-awareness. It argues that no individual exists in isolation; biological, ecological, linguistic, and psychological processes form a relational field within which identity emerges. Psychological suffering arises not from thought itself but from identification with thought—mistaking transient cognitive activity for a stable self. -/- Building on phenomenological insights from Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger, the paper reframes meta-cognition as a biologically grounded capacity (...) for recursive awareness: the mind’s ability to observe its own processes. This meta-awareness weakens narrative identification and reduces reactive cruelty, allowing compassion to emerge as a structural consequence of clear perception rather than moral prescription. -/- The study further diagnoses a defining tension of modern civilization: a structural asymmetry between rapidly expanding scientific capability and uneven development of reflective wisdom. Science systematically increases predictive power and technological control but does not inherently regulate ethical maturity. When capability expands without corresponding awareness, technological amplification intensifies unexamined psychological conditioning. -/- The paper proposes a reintegration of science and lived philosophy. Philosophy is redefined not as abstract theorization but as sustained self-observation—meditative awareness of thought and emotion within relational existence. System philosophy must answer the question: How does a theory ground itself? With “dyadic priority” as its core, Dao-Er philosophy must construct a corresponding meta-methodology. This paper proposes “open self-reference,” which enables the system’s self-interpretation, self-critique, self-renewal, and non-dogmatization through dyadicity. It reviews the classic dilemmas of self-reference paradoxes, semantic closure, and hermeneutic circles, clarifies the three core principles of open self-reference, and reveals its “grounding-critique-generation” mechanism. It also responds to the core objections of relativism and self-refutation. (...) Philosophers sometimes refer to ‘moves’ made in the context of a philosophical debate. Once familiar with these recognizable tropes, we then possess them as tools – a suite of possible moves to make in novel contexts. In this paper, I outline three such philosophy moves, then demonstrate how moves can be combined. Examples of moves and some combinations feature throughout the paper.

Several authors claim that, according to Wittgenstein, ethics has no particular subject matter and that, consequently, there is and can be no such thing as meta-ethics. These authors argue that, for Wittgenstein, a sentence’s belonging to ethics is a classification by use rather than by subject matter and that ethics is a pervasive dimension of life rather than a distinguishable region or strand of it. In this article, I will critically examine the reasons and arguments given for these claims. (...) In my view, a Wittgensteinian perspective does not exclude the possibilities of doing meta-ethics and of there being a particular subject matter of moral philosophy. These alleged impossibilities are not the distinguishing marks of Wittgensteinian moral philosophy. What distinguishes Wittgensteinian moral philosophy from traditional moral philosophy is, rather, its emphasis on alternative ways of thinking about the subject matter of moral philosophy. (shrink)

This paper examines the structural fragmentation of contemporary philosophy and argues that the post-postmodern condition requires the development of a unified meta-methodology capable of mediating between divergent philosophical paradigms. Contemporary discourse remains divided across analytic and continental traditions, universalist and contextualist commitments, and conflicting normative frameworks, yet no shared higher-order structure exists to reconcile these tensions. The emergence of advanced AI systems further intensifies this problem, as heterogeneous philosophical assumptions become implicitly embedded in computational architectures, influencing reasoning, meaning, (...) and value alignment. -/- To explore how integrative frameworks might be constructed, the paper analyzes OntoMesh—an ambitious computational-philosophical model grounded in the principle “Code as Being”—as a case study of large-scale unification attempts. OntoMesh illuminates both the potential of linking ontology, epistemology, and ethics within a single architectural logic, and the risks associated with pancomputationalism, reductionism, and normative opacity. The paper concludes that while no existing model fully resolves philosophical fragmentation, the pursuit of meta-methodological reconstruction is indispensable for conceptual coherence in a technologically mediated world, and it provides preliminary groundwork for future integrative philosophical systems. This research constructs a rigorous, formalized and self-referential unified existential framework for natural philosophy, which takes Difference as the primary logical origin, This-That as the original binary relation, and the F(Σ) recursive operation as the core generative mechanism. Departing from the traditional linear causal framework and metaphysical dualism, the framework elaborates the intrinsic grammatical rules of the world’s self-unfolding through twelve hierarchical and interlocked axioms, revealing that all existential phenomena are the recursive expansion results of the original Difference via (...) This article develops Change Philosophy as an integrated framework of ontology, epistemology, axiology, and praxeology. The experiential claim that time does not stop serves as an entry point rather than a deductive proof. Change is proposed, through a cumulative, abductive, and reconstructive argument, as the primordial meta-fact: concrete phenomena are interpreted as temporally and relationally conditioned formations, while relative stability is explained as patterned continuity within change. V2.2 sharpens the priority thesis by distinguishing universality from meta-factuality and (...) by defining entity, property, state, process, relation, and law as derived roles within event-flow. Failure of indispensable reconstruction would count against the strong mono-categorical thesis. Causation is bounded as a separate explanatory question except where a causal theory claims ontological priority. Dao is defined as the proposed governing law of sustainable continuity through convergence and divergence, and De as the standard of operation aligned with Dao. Within this hierarchy, Change Ontology interprets reality as event-flow; Change Epistemology treats knowing as time-indexed, confidence-sensitive cognitive flow; Change Axiology treats value as dynamic relevance and consequence for affected beings and systems; and Change Praxeology treats action as authorized, proportionate, monitored, and withdrawable intervention. Explicit bridge premises connect event-flow, cognitive flow, value-flow, action-flow, and renewed event-flow without deriving normative conclusions from ontology alone. The seven-module model is classified as a defeasible functional decomposition rather than an ontological proof, while P-J-I-M-E and a layered distributed ChangeCision AI architecture remain operational research programmes. Direct comparison with Aristotle, Whitehead, event ontology, persistence theory, structural realism, and powers ontology is joined by stronger objection-reply treatment concerning substrate, external stimulus, category dependence, and normativity. Bernard Williams argues that philosophy is in some deep way akin to history. This article is a novel exploration and defense of the Williams thesis —though in a way anathema to Williams himself. The key idea is to apply a central moral from what is sometimes called the analytic philosophy of history of the 1960s to the philosophy of philosophy of today, namely, the separation of explanation and laws. I suggest that an account of causal explanation (...) offered by David Lewis may be modified to bring out the way in which this moral applies to philosophy, and so to defend the Williams thesis. I discuss in detail the consequences of the thesis for the issue of philosophical progress and note also several further implications: for the larger context of contemporary metaphilosophy, for the relation of philosophy to other subjects, and for explaining, or explaining away, the belief that success in philosophy requires a field-specific ability or brilliance. Contemporary philosophical, ethical, and religious discourses often remain fragmented, lacking a shared conceptual ground for dialogue. This paper proposes a common foundation for philosophy, ethics, and religion without relying on any particular doctrinal standpoint. Drawing on comparative philosophy and world philosophy, it introduces the concept of “All” as a foundational notion capable of encompassing diverse philosophical, ethical, and religious frameworks. The concept of “All” is positioned as a meta-level category that includes and transcends fundamental distinctions such (...) as knowing/not-knowing, being/non-being, and good/evil. The paper first reexamines these basic distinctions and defines “All” as the inclusive ground that contains them. It then reconstructs the foundations of philosophy, ethics, and religion respectively: philosophy as the intellectual awareness of All, ethics as the volitional affirmation of All, and religion as the experiential unity with All. Finally, it demonstrates how these three foundations are interconnected through All and form a dynamic cycle of differentiation and return. The contribution of this study lies in presenting a meta-theoretical foundation that enables dialogue and mutual understanding across philosophical, ethical, and religious traditions. (shrink)

The Philosophy of Discrete Being (FDB) is a meta-ontological framework that models reality as a system of coherence-preserving localities updated through discrete transitions driven by a universal non-metric ordering source. Rather than assuming geometric continuity, FDB treats coherence, synchronization, and ontic-distance constraints as the primary structural conditions enabling persistence, identity, and interaction in distributed systems. The framework introduces four foundational components: (1) localities as minimal self-consistent units governed by internal metamodels; (2) the Global Tick Generator (GTG) as a (...) universal discrete ordering mechanism independent of physical time; (3) ontic distance as a structural measure of compatibility between localities; and (4) acts of coherence as synchronization events aligning invariants and reducing structural divergence across GTG updates. This article provides a systematic overview of the structural architecture of FDB, including the emergence of temporal order, the dynamics of distributed coherence, and the formation of multi-local configurations. Connections to Coherent Observational Epistemology (COE) are clarified, showing how FDB supplies the ontological substrate while COE provides the epistemic constraints for inference across heterogeneous observational domains. Philosophical theories of explanation characterize the difference between correct and incorrect explanations. While remaining neutral as to which of these ‘first-order’ theories is right, this paper asks the ‘meta-explanatory’ question: is the difference between correct and incorrect explanation real, i.e., objective or mind-independent? After offering a framework for distinguishing realist from anti-realist views, I sketch three distinct paths to explanatory anti-realism.

We propose the Singularity–Duality–Triality (S-D-T) framework, a constrained meta-theoretical heuristic for characterizing systems in which stable higher-order organization emerges through mediation between competing dynamical structures, not a first-order physical theory. The framework addresses a question with roots in wave-particle complementarity: whether process-first descriptions reveal structural constraints that object-first descriptions systematically miss. Just as treating a photon as an interfering wavefunction rather than a particle reveals interference structure the particle description cannot access—a methodological rather than physical parallel—S-D-T proposes that treating (...) a system's organization as a generative process reveals the mediating constraint responsible for its stability—a reframing the framework is proposed to extend across physical, biological, and informational domains. Three contributions follow: (i) a formal definition of Triality with exclusion criteria and an operational novelty test; (ii) a framework-level falsification condition (F0) with pre-specification requirements; and (iii) the SAF (Stability–Adaptability–Functionality) Coherence Index, a domain-agnostic composite metric derived from the triadic grammar. A minimal dynamical model demonstrates that triadic stabilization is non-reducible to parameter variation within the dual system. The framework's validity depends on whether triadic mediation proves necessary in systems meeting the specified criteria. (shrink)

A review of a collection of essays one meta-philosophy by fifteen philosophers, including Rorty, Castañeda and Putnam. It is a stimulating collection, useful reading for those who want to go beyond the caricatures of today's philosophy in America, for those interested in the discussion on the origins of the split between continental philosophy and Anglo-American philosophy and for the philosopher who does not disdain a moment of "self-consciousness". The editors, both teaching at Tel-Aviv University, have (...) proved able to manage this small transoceanic enterprise with originality; it is a symptom, like those represented by many other books of Israeli philosophers published in recent years in German and much more in English, of the vitality and openness to the outside world of this small philosophical community. The viability of philosophy as a genuine field of knowledge has been challenged time and again. Some have challenged “traditional” philosophy, or what was considered “traditional philosophy” at a given time; others have challenged philosophy in general. But there has been considerable progress in philosophical methodology in the 20th- and 21st- centuries. In this talk I raise challenges to some of the current misconceptions of analytic philosophy, and I propose constructive methodological solutions.

Ludwig Wittgenstein has often been called a quietist. His work has inspired a rich and varied array of theories in moral philosophy. Some prominent meta-ethicists have also been called quietists, or ‘relaxed’ as opposed to ‘robust’ realists, sometimes with explicit reference to Wittgenstein in attempts to clarify their views. In this chapter, I compare and contrast these groups of theories and draw out their importance for contemporary meta-ethical debate. They represent countercultures to contemporary meta-ethics. That is, (...) they reject in different ways one or more of the common assumptions that, whilst not universally shared, shape how to understand and engage in contemporary meta-ethical debate. Despite striking similarities, I argue that the ‘quietist’ label has obscured the views it is used to describe, the crucial differences between them, and the challenge that they offer to the predominant culture of meta-ethical enquiry. That challenge is this: there are plausible different ways of understanding and doing meta-ethics to those of the meta-ethical orthodoxy. We ignore such heterodoxy at our own peril. (shrink)

In this article, we propose meta-subjectivity and ideational analysis. Meta-subjectivity is a philosophically grounded social ontology that posits the self as a dynamic intersubjective and relational environmental process. Ideational analysis is a sociohistorical abductive method for studying the generation of collective belief systems and their structuration. We critique contemporary epistemologies found within the humanities and social sciences, such as Smith and Searle’s critical realism. Building on Storm’s metamodernism, we offer our perspective as innovation. This paper has two aims: First, to provide an elucidation of the kind of meta-ethical programme at work in Mary Midgley's (1919-2018) Beast and Man: The Roots of Human Nature (published in 1978). Second, to make the case for Midgley's placement within the philosophical and philosophical-historical canon, specifically, as an important figure within the meta-ethical movement of ‘Neo-Aristotelian naturalism'. On historical and systematic grounds, I argue that Midgley should be classified as a neo-Aristotelian ethical naturalist notwithstanding the distinctive (...) features of Midgley’s specific brand of neo-Aristotelianism. In doing so, I suggest a more generally applicable family resemblance approach to the history of philosophy in order to classify and re-introduce into the canon figures in the history of philosophy that are in danger of falling into oblivion. Das Korpus geht von der Annahme aus, dass Sinnbildung in digitalen Systemen nicht durch Kontrolle, sondern durch Bewusstheit entsteht – nicht durch Verschmelzung, sondern durch (...) Zweiheit. Haltung wird dabei zu einer empirisch erfahrbaren Bedingung von Sinn, Resonanz zu einer ethischen Kategorie. Die dreizehn Arbeiten des Korpus bilden ein integriertes System aus Logik, Haltung und ästhetischer Verantwortung und erweitern klassische KI-Ethik um zeitliche, polyphone und ko-resonante Dimensionen. Experimental philosophy of aesthetics is the attempt of using empirical methods to make progress in traditional questions in philosophical aesthetics and philosophy of art. While psychology of aesthetics and neuroaesthetics have mainly focused on aesthetic experiences and aesthetic appreciation, experimental philosophy of aesthetics explores people’s conceptions of the aesthetic and artistic realms. Thus, one of its main topics of investigation has been “folk meta-aesthetics”, i. e., whether people consider aesthetic properties to be objective rather than subjective. (...) In this chapter, I begin by presenting a comprehensive survey of this debate and how it engages a wide variety of topics in philosophical aesthetics: the nature of guilty pleasures and aesthetic taste, the possibility of aesthetic disagreement, and the value of aesthetic testimony. I then illustrate the breadth and variety of empirical research in the field of experimental philosophy of aesthetics by summarizing past and present research on topics as diversified as the definition of art, the ontology of musical works of arts, the nature of aesthetic adjectives, the interaction between aesthetic and non-aesthetic evaluations, the paradox of fiction, and the puzzle of imaginative resistance. An astonishing volume and diversity of evidence is available for many hypotheses in the biomedical and social sciences. Some of this evidence—usually from randomized controlled trials (RCTs)—is amalgamated by meta-analysis. Despite the ongoing debate regarding whether or not RCTs are the ‘gold-standard’ of evidence, it is usually meta-analysis which is considered the best source of evidence: meta-analysis is thought by many to be the platinum standard of evidence. However, I argue that meta-analysis falls far short of (...) that standard. Different meta-analyses of the same evidence can reach contradictory conclusions. Meta-analysis fails to provide objective grounds for intersubjective assessments of hypotheses because numerous decisions must be made when performing a meta-analysis which allow wide latitude for subjective idiosyncrasies to influence its outcome. I end by suggesting that an older tradition of evidence in medicine—the plurality of reasoning strategies appealed to by the epidemiologist Sir Bradford Hill—is a superior strategy for assessing a large volume and diversity of evidence. Contemporary philosophy, after confronting the plurality and locality of theoretical perspectives, finds itself caught in a dilemma between foundationalist dogmatism and relativist anarchy. This paper systematically argues that a path named "Philosophy of Finitude" is the way out of this predicament. Its core thesis is: the foundation of philosophical validity should shift from pursuing ultimate synthesis to thoroughly acknowledging the fundamental finitude of human understanding and developing a corresponding meta-methodology. This paper first establishes the ontological situation of (...) human understanding—the "Domain of Encounter - Domain of Comprehension - Horizon" Tripartite Matrix of Finitude, revealing that all cognition is constrained by the absolute boundaries of experiential material, conceptual tools, and present attention. Within this matrix, the "Project" as the basic unit of understanding undergoes a constructive process from "Capture-Truncation-Intervention" to "Forgetting-Self-justification". Its successful operation solidifies into a "Domain of Governance", breeding two philosophical vices: "The Totalizing One" and "The Either-Or". To address this, this paper constructs a methodological toolkit: delineating theoretical boundaries through "Demarcation", managing complementary perspectives through "Stellar Coordination", stimulating conceptual innovation through "Rhizomatic Linking", and cultivating "Negative Capability" to face the unspeakable "Domain of Silence". Ultimately, the Philosophy of Finitude transforms the philosopher's role from an "arbiter" of truth to a "gardener" of the ecology of understanding, and philosophical practice from a "war of truth" to "gardening of perspectives". This paper concludes that the Philosophy of Finitude not only provides a systematic method for coping with cognitive complexity but also issues a profound existential invitation: only by soberly accepting our own finitude can we, within these very boundaries, attain genuine cognitive freedom and philosophical wisdom. Meta-Intelligent-Design (Meta-ID) is a philosophical framework that employs two interlocking models—a Physical Model representing our universe's observable and calculable phenomena (e.g., physical laws, mutation rates, cosmic constants) and a Metaphysical Model encompassing unobservable realms (e.g., a spiritual domain with divine agency and free-willed souls)—to argue for purposeful cosmic design. The framework evaluates whether the Physical Model exhibits qualities (e.g., quantum indeterminacy) that could serve as "input channels" for the Metaphysical Model's outputs (e.g., subtle guidance for abiogenesis and evolution, (...) or soul-brain interfaces for consciousness). Alignment is bidirectional: Metaphysical outputs predict Physical channels, while Physical data validates or refutes the metaphysics. Assessed via inference to the best explanation (IBE), objective criteria (e.g., empirical fit, explanatory power, parsimony), and precise channel definitions, Meta-ID strengthens the case for a monotheistic metaphysics where God designs a natural world for partnership with free agents. We distinguish and discuss two different accounts of the subject matter of theories of reference, meta-externalism and meta-internalism. We argue that a form of the meta- internalist view, “moderate meta-internalism”, is the most plausible account of the subject matter of theories of reference. In the second part of the paper we explain how this account also helps to answer the questions of what kind of concept reference is, and what role intuitions have in the study of (...) the reference relation. Meta-Intelligence Theory (MI Theory) proposes that general intelligence is necessarily collective: the capacity to reason beyond direct experience requires inherited symbolic information and therefore cannot arise in isolation. The theory rests on four axioms: (1) the feature that makes intelligence general is its ability to form models from external symbolic communication, and this cannot be generated internally or obtained in isolation; (2) on Earth, informational exchange creates a unified substrate—the Meta-Intelligence (MI)—from which all human and non-human general intelligences (...) draw and to which they contribute; (3) the MI evolves stepwise as existing information recombines or integrates new experience, forming a collective cognitive frontier that bounds what can currently be known; and (4) no individual mind can contain or transcend the MI due to asymmetries of scale, perspective, and capability. By positioning intelligence as embedded in a distributed informational substrate, MI Theory reframes existing frameworks—the Extended Mind thesis, Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development, and theories of the noosphere—in structural rather than teleological terms. It challenges assumptions underlying AI alignment debates, provides foundations for exopsychology, and establishes the conceptual groundwork for Universality Theory, which examines the capacities that enable intelligences to thrive within the shared substrate of the MI. _Author’s note: This is an early draft circulated for comment. Coherence-Weighted Information Theory and the induced-weights program that grounds it require empirical validation across the cross-domain regime where their universality claims live. Adaptive Realism and Synthetic Epistemology forbid correspondence-truth validation at the foundational level. The real is what persists across recursive coherence arbitration, and external ground-truth oracles violate the framework's ontology before any measurement is taken. I specify a meta-coherence validation architecture that operates inside the framework's commitments. Three within-domain signatures of self-consistent measurement are required jointly: cross-philosophy convergence (...) (R2) across estimator classes with genuinely different inductive biases, persistence prediction (R1) grounding induced weights in Adaptive Realism's persistence criterion, and intervention asymmetry (R3) operationalizing the substrate-symbol distinction. A fourth condition, M5, carries the domain-translation invariance commitment as a structurally distinct admissibility gate sequenced before the within-domain matrix. The program tests these conditions across three domains spanning a substrate-stream transparency gradient, including a hidden semi-Markov source with structured emissions, Pfam protein families, and FOMC statements. What are the structural conditions under which any ontology becomes possible? Contemporary philosophy has produced a remarkable diversity of metaphysical systems, yet the principles governing their formation, comparison, and mutual intelligibility remain largely unexplored. Meta-Para-Ontology addresses this problem by shifting philosophical inquiry from competing descriptions of reality toward the reconstruction of the ontological prerequisites that make any description of reality possible. Its central concepts function as philosophical reconstructions of these underlying conditions of ontological articulation, remaining entirely distinct from (...) the designation of independently existing metaphysical entities. On this basis, Meta-Para-Ontology develops a unified account of manifestation, consciousness, causality, emergence, and reflexive realization as interconnected dimensions of a single architecture. This paper critically examines the ambivalent role of Meta-Resonance (Meta-R) within Judgemental Philosophy (JP), arguing that this second-order reflective capacity does not invariably lead to corrective self-awareness or enhanced judgemental authenticity. Building upon refined definitions of Resonance Illusion—where a subject misattributes the source of a subjectively felt Constructivity(C1)-Coherence(C2)-Resonance(R) process, remaining unaware of this misattribution due to Meta-R failure—and R Substitution—where the subject's own C1-C2-R process is not fully activated, being functionally replaced by external judgement-analogs, a situation (...) of which the subject may or may not be aware—this paper explores a crucial problematic: self-deception. We investigate scenarios where subjects, despite a partial awareness (a nascent Meta-R) of the illusory or substitutive nature of their resonant experiences, actively employ a "betraying" Meta-R to rationalize, justify, or perpetuate these states, thereby deepening self-deception rather than alleviating it. This dysfunctional Meta-R can construct elaborate C1-C2 structures to defend against uncomfortable truths or to maintain a preferred, albeit inauthentic, resonant state, often driven by underlying Affectivity and Resonance Drive (RD) motivations. This paper posits that Meta-R is not merely a cognitive error-correction mechanism but a complex 'judgement about judgement' whose function and outcome are deeply intertwined with the subject's affective landscape and existential commitments. Ultimately, true self-reflection and resonant authenticity require not just the presence of Meta-R, but its healthy, critically engaged operation, pointing to the need for understanding the conditions and limits of its functional integrity. This paper proposes Translational Ontology, a meta-ontological framework investigating the formal conditions under which ontological description is possible at all. Rather than advancing a new first-order inventory of what exists, the framework shifts focus to the structural constraints presupposed by any ontological claim. The central thesis is that translation, understood in a formal and non-linguistic sense, is a necessary condition of describability. What is described can never fully coincide with its description. From this starting point, the paper introduces interconnected (...) concepts: Qualions as minimal units of describability, Response Fields as loci of interaction, Translation Resistance as the formal impossibility of complete identity, and Homeostatic Regression as a dynamic constraint preserving stability without teleology. The notion of an Infinite Phase grounds distinction itself as a pre-distinct transcendental condition. Shared Qualion Fields and Dual-Mode Existence explain hierarchical organisation while avoiding reductionism and strong emergentism. The framework is applied to dissolve the mind–body problem by reframing it as a category error arising from the conflation of descriptive modes with ontological kinds. Situated in dialogue with Kantian transcendental philosophy, process thought, and East Asian relational traditions, Translational Ontology offers a systematic account of why relational and non-substantialist ontologies recur across philosophical contexts. This paper develops Meta-Aesthetics (MA) as a general philosophical framework for understanding how reality becomes accessible to any system — human, institutional, or artificial — without presupposing that reality is ever encountered as a unified, exhaustive whole. Rather than treating aesthetics as a domain restricted to art, taste, or subjective experience, Meta-Aesthetics reconceives aesthetic channels as causal pathways through which information propagates, and through which a system has learned (or failed to learn) to process its environment. On this (...) view, aesthetics names not an evaluative layer added onto reality, but the structural conditions under which reality becomes perceptible and computable at all. The central claim is that differences in belief, knowledge, meaning, and ontological commitment are best explained not by differences in reality itself, nor by competing representations of a shared object, but by variations in channel stability, informational attenuation, and systemic bandwidth. Reality is understood as a network of nested and overlapping causal structures whose effects propagate unevenly across systems with finite processing capacities. No system encounters reality in totality; each encounters localized intersections of broader processes. This is not relativism — causal structure is shared. What varies is access. Nor is this a claim about linguistic reference or designation; a system may refer to an object as a whole while its causal encounter with that object remains irreducibly partial. -/- This position has direct consequences for core metaphysical debates. Questions about fundamentality, grounding, and ontological commitment have typically been framed as questions about what reality contains and how its contents are structured. MA reframes these as questions about how causal structure is encountered by systems operating under informational constraints. The dispute between eliminativist and non-eliminativist positions, for example, is recast not as a disagreement about what exists but as a disagreement about the appropriate grain size at which causal structure should be tracked. MA does not dissolve ontological questions — it provides a principled account of why different philosophical traditions, scientific practices, and epistemic communities stabilize reality differently without any of them being simply wrong. -/- To formalize this insight, the paper introduces the Interobjective Continuum (IOC), a relational framework that correlates a system's perceptual and conceptual commitments with the degree of attenuation or saturation of its aesthetic channels. At one end are HyperObjects: causally saturated structures whose signal overwhelms the bandwidth of a given system — hurricanes, climate systems, geopolitical histories, quantum fields. At the other end are HypoObjects: causally underdetermined structures whose channels lack sufficient constraint and convergence — entities accessed only through instruments, sparse conceptual objects, or structures whose causal signatures are distributed across scales beyond any single channel's integration capacity. Crucially, these categories are observer-relative and do not imply ontological hierarchy or degrees of reality. The same structure can function as a HyperObject for one system and an ordinary object for another, depending on channel capacity and resolution. MA thus offers a systematic account of how the same causal reality generates irreducibly different ontological profiles across different systems. -/- The framework speaks directly to longstanding problems in the metaphysics of science. Debates over scientific realism have often stalled on the question of whether theoretical entities are real or merely useful fictions. MA reframes this: theoretical entities occupy determinate positions on the IOC relative to the instruments and inferential practices through which they are accessed. Their ontological status is neither simply real nor simply fictional but is a function of the stability and bandwidth of the channels through which they are constrained. This provides a principled middle path between naive realism and anti-realism without collapsing into constructivism. -/- MA also engages the problem of emergence. Rather than treating emergence as a brute metaphysical posit — higher-level properties that somehow resist reduction — MA grounds emergence in informational structure. Emergent properties are those that cannot be recovered from descriptions at finer grain sizes not because of any mysterious causal discontinuity but because the channels through which higher-level regularities are stabilized are orthogonal to those through which lower-level processes are tracked. Emergence, on this account, is a feature of the IOC, not of nature itself. -/- The framework integrates insights from network theory, philosophy of science, and foundational physics not as metaphor but as substrate. MA aligns with the view that reality is fundamentally relational, processual, and field-like, while rejecting the assumption that philosophical frameworks can mirror physical structure directly. Philosophy of technology was not initially considered a consolidated field of inquiry. However, under the influence of sociology and pragmatist philosophy, something resembling a consensus has emerged in a field previously marked by a lack of agreement amongst its practitioners. This has given the field a greater sense of structure and yielded interesting research. However, the loss of the earlier “messy” state has resulted in a limitation of the field’s scope and methodology that precludes an encompassing view of (...) the problematic issues inherent in the question of technology. It is argued that the heterodox disunity and diversity of earlier philosophy of technology was not a mark of theoretical immaturity but was necessitated by the field’s complex subject matter. For some post-structuralist complexity theorists, there are no epistemic meta-perspectives from where to judge between different epistemic perspectives toward complex systems. In this paper, I argue that these theorists face a dilemma because they argue against meta-perspectives from just such a meta-perspective. In fact, when we understand two or more different perspectives, we seem to unavoidably adopt a meta-perspective to analyse, compare, and judge between those perspectives. I further argue that meta-perspectives can be evaluated and (...) judged from meta-meta-perspectives, and so on. This suggests an epistemic hierarchy. Perspectives, meta-perspectives, meta-meta-perspectives, etc. can be ranked according to the degree to which they confer understanding. This paper proposes a necessary condition for genuine understanding—mathematical or otherwise—in both biological and artificial cognitive systems. We argue that understanding requires two complementary capacities: recursive meta-cognitive hierarchization, formalized as the Variable-Level Condition (VLC), which demands that a system be able to treat the levels of its own cognitive hierarchy as variables subject to dynamic reconstitution without a predetermined ceiling; and Dynamic Computational Self-Monitoring (DCSM), a real-time mechanism for tracking cognitive level, estimating marginal epistemic yield of further level reconstitution, (...) and applying dynamic termination criteria that are themselves subject to meta-cognitive revision. Together, these constitute the DCSM Criterion. We show that VLC generates computational explosion of exponential order in any finite system, and that the Paradox of Unbounded Understanding is resolved through principled finitude rather than actual infinite recursion. Applying the DCSM Criterion to current AI architectures, we argue that they occupy an asymptotic trajectory toward understanding: they partially satisfy conditions (a) and (b) but fail condition (c)—operative level reconstitution—in a way that may represent a principled rather than merely technical limitation. I express my scepticism about Keith Frankish’s illusionism, the view that people are generally subject to a systematic illusion that any properties are phenomenal, and scout the relative merits of two alternatives to Frankish’s illusionism. The first is phenomenal meta-illusionism, the view that illusionists such as Frankish, in holding their (...) view, are themselves thereby under an illusion. Contemporary philosophy and science lack a unified ontological framework capable of coherently explaining the relationship between consciousness, probability, and experienced reality. Existing models tend to privilege either material processes or subjective experience, resulting in persistent conceptual gaps around perception, indeterminacy, and the role of the observer. Current approaches - ranging from physicalism and idealism to information-based theories -struggle to integrate experiential reality with deeper structural mechanisms without collapsing into reductionism or metaphysical speculation. In particular, no widely accepted framework systematically (...) distinguishes between foundational reality, the structural domain of possibility, and the rendered domain of experience. This paper proposes the Three-Circle Ontology, a meta-ontological model that organizes reality into three expression layers: Circle 1 (Source) as the nondual ontological ground, Circle 2 (Possibility-Code) as the structural field of latent configurations, and Circle 3 (Projection) as the domain of perceptual experience. Rather than treating consciousness, probability, and physical reality as competing primitives, the model positions them as functionally distinct but ontologically continuous layers of expression. The framework does not present an empirical theory, predictive model, or spiritual doctrine. Its scope is explicitly conceptual and structural, intended to clarify foundational assumptions underlying existing scientific and philosophical models. The notion of social construction plays an important role in many areas of social philosophy, including the philosophy of gender and sex, the philosophy of race, and the philosophy of disability. Yet it is far from clear how this notion is to be understood. One promising proposal in the recent literature is that social construction may be analyzed in terms of the notion of metaphysical grounding. In this paper, I introduce a new problem for this ground-theoretic (...) approach to social construction, and I argue that extant ground theoretic accounts are unable to avoid this and other problems. I then propose a novel ground-theoretic account of social construction which avoids these problems. The core idea is that cases of social construction involve a distinctively social means of construction. I develop this idea using the notion of meta-ground, so that on the resulting view the distinctive feature of socially constructed facts is that their associated meta grounds include a suitable connective social fact.
