Weekend accomplished

This was a good week/weekend. On Thursday, I bought a couch at IKEA, and managed to load it and get it home in the van. Sometimes I really love having a minivan. We needed a new couch, because our old ones were nasty. We moved everything to the den before christmas, so that the floors could be waxed, ad M. decided we weren't moving them back. One of them, a leather one that we both really love and that we brought from CA, is being thrown out 'cause the dog had an accident on one of the cushions. Now we just have to train the dogs to stay off the new one. It was kind of nice shopping for new furniture though, and I look forward to having a real budget to play with as we slowly molt our college furniture away.
We went to Austin Homebrew Supply on Friday afternoon, using my gift certificate to get cheesemaking supplies, and to Costco for milk. Ira doesn't seem to like his car seat right now, and I can hardly blame him after all those long trips. for some reason we were both really exhausted and ended up going to sleep around 10.30, so I set the alarm for 6.30 on saturday. I woke up and got some good work done before the sprogger woke up, getting my revision finished and submitted to ApJ. Later, we started the cheesemaking. We made mozzarella first, which is really easy, and turned out well. I also wanted to do cheddar, but we needed a bigger pot, so I checked a couple of places looking for a good deal on a large stockpot. As an aside- don't ever go to the chinese market on the weekend before Chinese New Year. Gong hay fat choy indeed. The pot I got ended up being too big to fit in the sink, so we used the bath to bring it up to temperature. I got in the tub with Ira, and he helped by vigorously splashing the warm water around the tub. The cheddar is now all pressed and is drying out- later I have to wax it, but it has to age for a few months before we can eat it- hopefully it'll be good. We stayed up late listening to Says You, and watching some TV on the couch- quite nice.
Today I did more cores, played a lot with Ira, and ordered DSL. I figured out that with the deals att is having, we can switch from cable to dsl and save about 65 dollars a month for the first 3 months, and 30 after that. Anyway, all in all a home-productive weekend, if not terribly work-productive, but that's what tomorrow is for, right?

Interview Meme

Questions from bobthemole

1. How did you realize that physics was the IT subject for you?

In High School, Physics was the hardest subject, according to everyone I talked to. But I took to it, and it just made sense. I love being able to describe the world through equations, and reduce a series of events down to a simple equation. To be fair, part of it was ego though, since I knew I could do something that everyone thought was hard. That part has kind of gone away by now (PhD programs will do that), but I still really enjoy the math, and also I love to teach physics to people now as well.

2. What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
That's a tough one, but I'd have to go for Amy's Zilker Mint Chip. Most of amy's flavors are great, though I don't like Belgian Chocolate, or the beer ones.

3. The TARDIS shows up and the Doctor offers you "Just one trip. Really. Just one." Where and when would you choose to go?
Well, a trick answer would be, "To the future, where I can pick up an encyclopedia and figure out how history unfolds." But barring that, I think I would like to see how the first globally recognized Human-Extraterrestrial meetings go, to see if we can play well with others.

4. What is one food you just can't eat, even though other people seem to like it?
Belgian Chocolate. Too sweet and not enough chocolate. Also, capers. I can't stand them and they remind me of having to clean out the sink.

5. What's the story behind your username?
I heard it from an astronomer at a conference- from 'peri'- close, and 'bothros'- pit, it is an orbit's point of closest approach to a back hole. I thought it sounded cool, so I used it. It's also an anagram of "Brother Pino". It must not be too widely used, because if you google it, the first six links are my pages. My mom says it sounds like a Hobbit from LoTR.

I can give you questions if you want.

(no subject)

Ira seems endlessly fascinated by the mobile above his crib. He cries when it stops, and looks at it in wonder while it spins. So cool.
