Where Our Philanthropic Data Comes From

Patron View compiles publicly available philanthropic information from the following sources:

  • IRS Form 990 filings — Federal tax documents that nonprofits must file annually, containing information about grants, contributions, and organizational finances. These are public records.
  • Annual reports from cultural institutions — Many museums, libraries, and cultural organizations publish annual reports listing their donors and supporters.
  • Official donor lists — Recognition publications, donor walls, and membership acknowledgments from institutions.
  • Staff directories and board listings — Publicly available organizational information from institution websites.
  • Press releases and announcements — Official communications from institutions about major gifts and partnerships.

Data Accuracy & Verification

We take data accuracy seriously and use a multi-step verification process:

  1. Source document collection — We gather annual reports, 990 filings, and other primary sources
  2. Data extraction — Information is extracted using automated tools combined with manual review
  3. Cross-referencing — When possible, we verify information against multiple sources
  4. Quality assurance — Our team reviews extracted data for accuracy and consistency

Commitment to Data Integrity: We use optical character recognition (OCR) to process thousands of pages of documents, combined with machine learning algorithms and hundreds of hours of human review. Every batch of records undergoes manual human verification to ensure accuracy in donor names, contribution levels, and institutional affiliations. As of September 2025, we estimate a 98% accuracy level across the database.

Important: While we verify data against IRS 990 filings, Patron View cannot guarantee the completeness of historical records. We strive to have a comprehensive, accurate listing and we continue to add new data sources. But there are many that we do not yet have access to.
