Days 5, 6 and 7

I am exhausted. Niece and nephew are here, mobile, and crazy. They're adorable and fun, but my nephew is having trouble adjusting to being in a different place (he's a very routine baby). Subsequently, any time it's nap time, he cries like you wouldn't believe. He cried today for 2 hours. TWO HOURS. I adore being an Aunt, but I'm having problems acclimatizing to them being here. It's so hectic (my parents are remodeling). And the babies are so much older now! They're more sensitive, and complex; it's harder to know what they want, because sometimes it's not just eat/sleep/diaper/play. I love them so much though! They're getting more curious everyday which is hard, but fun. Plus my niece appears to be some sort of baby ninja. She is crazy fast, and has an amazing reach. And she's the one that can walk.

I need a drink of some sort.

Anyways, I'm lumping together the days I've missed...

Day 4...

Day 04 - Your favorite show ever

It's kind of funny how easily I came up with the answer to "My favorite show ever"; there is only really one viable option, and that is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There have been so many shows that I've loved and adored over the years, but Buffy was the first show where I really became immersed in the whole fandom aspect, and where I actually wanted to talk about it, think about it, obsess about it, rewatch it, etc.

I love Buffy. I still love that show to this day. It's comforting and fantastic, and so much fun. It was heartwrenching when I watched it as it aired, but looking back, I love that this television show brought me to such highs and lows and made me so invested. I can't remember a show previously that had done that. Before, it was sitcoms which you kind of leave behind once they're over, or maybe for a drama there was ER, but nothing else that captured me the way that Buffy did.

It's not just that it was the first show to do this, but that to this day, I still care about Buffy and the Scooby gang. I still adore them, even when they annoyed the crap out of me (I'm looking at you, Willow... or Dawn). The characters were amazing, the writing fantastic -- pithy, witty, and heartbreaking when necessary. BtVS (just typing that kind of gives me a thrill!) will always be my favorite show. It set the bar. It showed me what television can do. I think I will always love it.

Okay, so technically, like 2 hours late... but I'm still counting it!

I haven't been to bed so it's actually kind of still Thursday. Sort of.

Oh well.

Day 03 - Your favorite new show (aired this TV season)

This one was remarkably easy to pick -- The Good Wife. It's without a doubt my favorite new show, and I'll tell you why: AWESOME WOMEN. Seriously... the women in this show are SO good, from Alicia to Kalinda (I want to be Kalinda when I grow up!) to Diane to even Peter's mother, who is kind of secretly a bad ass (and Alan Cumming's fantastic character is slightly afraid of her, as he should be!). The writing is so nuanced (for the most part, I'm ignoring you, stupid "cliffhanger," and the recent look at Kalinda's personal life), and it's weird how I have no idea what I want to happen -- do I want her to reconcile with Peter? Maybe. Or get with Will? No idea. Or keep her job as a result of using her connections? Kind of.

This show brings new meaning to shades of gray. It's suspenseful without being gimmicky, and intriguing on so many levels -- how does an older woman reentering the workforce cope? What is a good wife and mother? How much do you have to sacrifice of yourself for your family and your job? Can anyone balance everything? And everything in the professional life seems to be based on making connections, on finding a name for yourself... so what do you do when your name is kind of infamous due to your husband's crimes?

When in doubt, go to the bar and down some tequila, a la Kalinda.

Watch What You Watch and See What You See

I thought I was a day late with this, but technically... I'm not. Phew.

Day 02 - A show that you wish more people were watching

Ugh this one is hard... mainly because the ones that I wished more people were watching have been canceled! I could say Chuck, because it's a fun, good time show, and I really do enjoy it... and I hate how every season I'm waiting to see whether or not it will get renewed. But despite the fact that it's been canceled (and that this veers back into Day 1 territory... but it's so recent! So I'm sad), I have to say I wish more people watched Better Off Ted. It was so quirky and delightful, and just full of awesome... I will miss it immensely. That was my show that I wish more people watched for the 2009-2010 tv season.

TV meme... beware!

In an attempt to get back into using LJ and remembering to post (we'll see if it lasts, especially since the niece and nephew are coming this weekend and I expect to be super exhausted 24/7), I thought I'd try to do the tv meme that's going around... plus, maybe it'll get me out of "grad school mindset" and into fannish mode.

Alive!

I have survived my first year of grad school... which still surprises me. And I haven't flunked out, which is also of the good, but we'll see how next year, which will be even more challenging, goes. But for now, I'm pretending it doesn't exist...

and instead, y'know what does? TELEVISION! MOVIES! NOVELS THAT ARE FUN TO READ!

Gah so excited! Even though a good number of my dvds are left at school, and not at home. Oops. We'll see how it goes though... Burn Notice and Leverage are coming back!! I can't wait. And I should probably suck it up and TRY to watch the newest Doctor Who, which I've DVRed, but I'm kind of dreading it.

So far, I've just been sleeping and recuperating and I finally saw "Up" last night, which made me cry like 900 times. I don't know how I would take my niece and nephew to see it... not that they could understand it now. Though my niece has started walking! They're coming in a couple of weeks so that'll be fun as well. And exhausting. They're more tiring than school.

Anyways, I guess this is my "Yay, Summer!" post... I've missed LJ.

RIP Dixie Carter...

Yes, you can give him a message. You do take shorthand, don't you? Good, we take it in the South too. Anyway, just tell him that I have been a Southerner all my life, and I can vouch for the fact the we do eat a lot of things down here... and we've certainly all had our share of grits and biscuits and gravy, and I myself have probably eaten enough fried chicken to feed a third world country - not to mention barbecue, cornbread, watermelon, fried pies, okra, and... yes... if I were being perfectly candid, I would have to admit we have also eaten our share of crow, and for all I know - during the darkest, leanest years of the Civil War, some of us may have had a Yankee or two for breakfast. But... speaking for myself and hundreds of thousands of my Southern ancestors who have evolved through many decades of poverty, strife, and turmoil, I would like for Mr. Weaks to know that we have surely eaten many things in the past, and we will surely eat many things in the future, but - God as my witness - we have never, I repeat, never eaten dirt!
