Ilyana Vanzant is a WHAT?!!?!!?!?

I only found out recently that Ilyana Vanzant was a Yourba priestess. In an article online (I dont remember where- but I am sure you can google her and find it), it states that her house is completely normal, and you couldnt tell she was a priestess except for a few facts:
There are also the altars. On the one in her bedroom, where she does her daily 5:30 A.M. meditation, rest an amethyst crystal, ashes from the altar of the Dalai Lama and images of her spiritual gurus: Baba Muktananda, Babaji, Gurumayi Chidvilasananda, Vishnu, Buddha. On the altar in her book-lined office sit seven glasses of water and an image of the Black Madonna. This is where she consecrates her eyes, head, mouth and ears before sitting down at her computer to write. There's a third ancestral altar downstairs in a room in the basement, which she visits weekly. On it are displayed old family photos and pictures of 21 legendary African-American women, among them Harriet Tubman, Aubre Lorde, Queen Mother Moore and Ida B. Wells. "I'm standing on my ancestors," she explains. "They are powerful people who have done so much of the work."

I guess my amazement was that she is a priestess and well accepted in current society. For a black woman to extend beyond Christianity and be seen as healthy, inspirational and socially acceptable is amazing. One of the achievements I would like to do in my lifetime is extend beyond my personal choice as Wiccan and find a way to express my culture as well. I always complain about the "Celtic Wicca" fad (you know- my great great great great great great grand is from Ireland, so I clad myself with knots and call myself weird names and only practice with Celtic diety) as something that is overplayed and not something I can identify with. Making my practices personal and culturally specific to my needs is something that I strive for, and Ilyana's alters are a reminder of how I can expand my identification to the practice.

I am curious as to other's opinions or what connections others have made to connect their culture with their practice. And hell, was I the only person who didn't know she was a priestess?!?!?!?!

Full of questions...

One of the responses to what we should do to make this group better was to have more community ideas. This poses some challenges for me, because this group is set up to be an extension of the minorities within the pagan community. How do you get the smallest of the small to talk and feel comfortable with each other? How do you get people who have been in the pagan community for a long time to read and respond to interesting topics? Finally, how do we help each other grow? To pierce through these how's I pose some questions to you: How do you fit in the pagan minority profile? How do you create a sense of community and self worth within the pagan community? We all need a sense of community, how do you feel about interactions you had in your "minority" community as opposed to your pagan community? What would you like to change?

Bible Study in GA Classes

One of the topics buzzing around here in GA is the inclusion of Bible classes in the schools. Now I dont want to bring this up to create a flame war on the Bible, but I am wondering what your take on this is. How do you feel this will effect you as a pagan? For me this is a topic that burns my britches, only because it is not structured or moderated. I have no problem with my (imaginary) children learning about other religions, especially the one that many laws and social standards are based on. To be culturally aware of one's surroundings is a wonderful thing that shows growth. BUT, feeding someone's personal beliefs as the law is not acceptable. We are looking at the passing of legislation that will produce a class that is unmoderated or outlined. As a pagan, this can lead to children that have misunderstandings about what I and other pagans believe, and cause hatred and bias. We are passing a legislation that allows anybody, and not exclusively clergy teach religion. I would hate for my (imaginary) child to learn the wonderful magic of Shakespeare from a math teacher. I like the separation of state and church, and this is too invasive for me.

Group Dynamics..

I, butafli, your quiet and moody mod have decided that I will share some things with the group when I get the chance. These things are of different topics and ideas, but will all have the main theme of being pagan and sometimes will be silly or random things. So I dont start spamming the group with worthless information, everything will be under a cut that tells you exactly what it is, and I invite all of you to do the same. But first I am going to ask you- our dear members- to tell me if this is going ok, or if this is a bad idea. This poll counts, so make your vote!

Allo to new members!

Greetings new members, how are you all doing?

Where is everyone at lately? Spring is coming, what if anything do you all do to observe the turn of the seasons? Anyone else observe Ostara?

*prods the membership with a stick* C'mon people talk!

How would you respond?

People nowadays like to pretend to be "pagan" just so that they can set themselves apart from the oppressive nature of Christianity. That is why "pagans" always extensively talk about Christianity in vain attempts to justify their idiocy. Without hot-headed Christians, neo-paganism would have never existed because you only need to look atit calmly and rationally to see how pathetic this whole "belief system"is. Modern "paganism" is mainly a domain of various pasty, emotionally fragile groups of people (aging hippies, lonely "cat ladies", computer geeks etc) who like to play social pariahs to make their lives seem more important.

I posted this once here- but after so much time, I wonder what it means to you today?
