Peter Tomaz-Dobrila is an electronic and IT engineer and a musician who focuses on the creative use of the new technologies. In 1996 he co-founded the Multimedia Centre KiberSRCeLab – KIBLA (MMC KIBLA), Maribor. Two years later he co-founded the Association for Culture and Education KIBLA (ACE KIBLA) and became its president. He managed MMC KIBLA and ACE KIBLA until 2004. Since then he has participated in numerous congresses and conventions on internet and multimedia and information culture. During 2005-2007, Peter Tomaz Dobrila has worked intensively in the New Media Art filed; being adviser for many ART festivals (Ars electronica festival 2005, 2007), actively participating in EVA (Electronic Imaging the Visual Arts & Beyond) and Echilot Conference in Moscow. He acts as consultant and advisor in cultural matters and is a fellow of the European Academy for Digital Media (EADIM). Last year, he became a member to the Committee for the preparation of the National programme for culture and just participated on World Summit for Information Society meetings in Geneva, Switzerland. This year he was appointed as the director for the arts department at the Ministry of Culture, Slovenia.

Angelo Vermeulen’s  (1971) past research in ecology, environmental pollution and teratology informs his art, which includes bio installations, experimental setups incorporating living organisms and sci-fi references. From 2002 till 2005 he worked on SKANNER, a new media project on human fear in collaboration with Tamuraj, musician and mathematics researcher. Biomodd is his worldwide series of cross-cultural, symbiotic installations fusing game culture, ecology and social interaction. He is currently developing a new Biomodd iteration in Los Baños and Manila in the Philippines. He also works on Translucent Futures, an artistic research project that deals with ubiquitous technology and the attrition of civil rights and privacy. Vermeulen has lectured internationally, and during the past few years has given over 60 talks throughout Europe, the US and Asia.

Emma Ota is a curator and researcher based in Tokyo. Her practices focus upon media arts and international exchange. She has worked for the media arts organization Trampoline, based in Germany and the UK and co-curated the Radiator Festival for Art and Technology in 2005. Also in this year she initiated the project Traversing Territories, fostering collaboration between students and young artists in Japan and the UK (which has since continued annually). In 2006 she established the project Dislocate for art, technology and locality which brings together international artists and experts in the discussion and debate of the role of new media in relation to our surrounding environment. Ota is guest curator at Ginza Art Lab, an independent artist run space and was also co-curator of Space Rabi Adesso, Koenji in 2008. Ota is highly concerned with promoting international cross-cultural communication between children and is co-founder of Inter-play [http://www.inter-play.org/], wishing to promote collaborative workshops and projects between children in Japan and other countries around the world.

Jerneja Rebernak holds degrees from the University of Ljubljana and University of Amsterdam respectively in Communication  Science and Media Studies.  Her MA research “Do it yourself media education in India” critiques the top down approach of ICT for development and focuses on grassroots tools for communication. She is currently working with the Cultural Exchange department at the Asia-Europe Foundation in Singapore contributing to photography, new media and artist networks projects. Her interests in media technologies and media education contributed to her engagement in developing the concept for the next Euro-Med Online Arts Festival. During the ASEUM symposium she wants to further explore aspects of social hardware and radical education.

Darren Moore is an Australian musician currently based in Singapore. He is involved in various projects as a drummer and as an experimental laptop artist. He has performed and collaborated with musicians such as Jon Rose, Chris Abrahams, Scott Tinkler, Eugene Pao, Tim O’Dwyer, Greg Lyons, Will Guthrie, Eric Boeren, Wilbert de Joode, Micheal Vatcher to name a few. He has toured throughout Europe, Australia, South East Asia, Japan and the USA. Currently in Singapore he is a lecturer in Popular Music at Lasalle College of the Arts

Brian O’Reilly is the creator of various works for moving images/live cinema, electronic/noise music, mixed media assemblage/installation, and is a contrabassist, focusing on the integration of electronic treatments and extended playing techniques.
While attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago on a scholarship for sculpture he spent his nights focused on the music of various members of the AACM, and  the local free/noise music scene,  until the late 1990’s when he relocated to Paris to study the composition techniques of the Greek composer and architect Iannis Xenakis, during this time he worked extensively with Xenakis’ electronic music system utilizing graphic sound synthesis the UPIC. After a year of research at Les Ateliers UPIC, he received an appointment to become the studio’s Musical Assistant.  Following his time in France he pursued graduate studies in MAT (Media Arts and Technology) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), and is now teaching Sonic Arts in Singapore. He has worked with Eliane Radigue, Luc Ferrari, Matmos, Maryanne Amacher, Fe-Mail, Steina and Woody Vasulka, and regularly performs & collaborates on projects with Garth Knox, Stefanie L. Ku, Zbigniew Karkowski and Curtis Roads.

Timothy O’Dwyer is a composer, saxophonist and educator working between the general areas of music known as jazz, contemporary notated music and improvised music. He has been a member of Elision Contemporary Ensemble since 1994 and was a founding member of the Melbourne cult punk-jazz group bucketrider. Following studies with Evan Parker and composer Richard Barrett in 1995 he has had the privilege of collaborating with many artists that he greatly admires including: John Butcher, Liza Lim, Bobby Previte, KK Null, Chaya Chernowin, and conceptual artists Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, and Katsushige Nakahashi. He is currently programme leader of music and lecturer in jazz at the School of Contemporary Music LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore and is a PhD candidate at Queensland University of Technology studying the phenomena of identity in improvised music. His current projects include his jazz group The Tim O’Dwyer Trio and the electro-acoustic project Iron Egg.

Tad Ermitano (May 1964) graduated from the Philippine Science High School in 1981, studied Biology at the University of Hiroshima, and holds a Bachelor`s degree in Philosophy from the University of the Philippines. He trained in film and video at the Mowelfund Film Institute and currently designs and mixes sound for digital features and produces video for projection in a variety of stage/concert contexts. He is a media artist and was the sole Filipino artist exhibiting at 20th anniversary of ISEA in 2008 (Main Juried Exhibition) and the Ogaki Biennale 2006 New Media Festival. His single-channel videos are distinguished by an audiovisual sensuousness underpinned by a logic that reflects his training in philosophy and the sciences. Included among these single-channel works are Sausage, The Retrochronological Transfer of Information, and Hulikotekan v. 2.1, the last two of which have been screened at a number of international festivals, including the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival and the Hong Kong International Film Festival. His facility with a broad range technologies has led to his exploration of computers, programming, and electronics to manipulate sound and video in real time. He also performs audiovisual pieces, both solo and as part of the experimental media group The Children of Cathode Ray.

Diego Maranan is an educator working in the fields of dance and digital technology. Past work includes research in translating dance notation into computer animation with Tom Calvert (Credo Interactive, Canada) and Ilene Fox (Dance Notation Bureau, USA); working with Judith Marcuse Projects (Canada) on art and advocacy projects, particularly the Earth Project; investigating qualities of human movement in SecondLife.com avatars with choreographer Sara Coffin as Dance Lab residents at the Scotiabank Dance Centre (Canada); and his continuing development of a framework for licensing and sharing choreography under a Creative Commons license, which he presented at the 2007 New Forms Festival in Vancouver. He has worked professionally with artists and in the field of information technology on both sides of the Pacific—most recently with Dancing Wounded and with Donna Miranda—and has conducted workshops in Canada, Japan, and the Philippines. Diego received his BSc in Computing Science and Contemporary Dance from Simon Fraser University (Canada) in 2005 and received scholarships and academic distinctions during his studies, including a Canadian Information Processing Student of the Year nomination and a 2006 Holy Body Tattoo Emerging Artist for British Columbia Honourable Mention. He was artist-in-residence at Green Papaya Art Projects in Manila in 2008. He currently teaches and develops courses in multimedia at the University of the Philippines Open University.

Diego lists compelling examples of visualizations and walks the audience through a well-established seven-step method for visualizing data. He will also discuss the uses of data visualization in the project he co-leads with Angelo Vermeulen, Biomodd [LBA2].

Lirio Salvador, one of the pioneers of industrial music and music deconstruction in the country (Garcia, 2006) discover the circuit bending concept in 1986. Unaware of the factual existence of this idea and the technical terms, he discover the possibilities of incorporating this technique in experimenting sound art and made it one of the important ingredients in  creating  his homemade instrument called Sandata.
Salvador bent and experiment sounds from simple inexpensive toys to pricey ones such as walkie-talkie, transistor radio, mini-amps, electronic toy guns, and toy keyboard. He also map sounds from discarded and newly bought voltage regulator, adaptor, guitar amps, VCD player, karaoke amps, computer and electronic circuit boards.
What makes his works unique is that he encases the circuit bent in stainless tube, mixing bowl, tray, casseroles, etc. complete with volume and tone control, and incorporates it in his sculptural musical instrument (see Oddmusic.com). He also adopted the idea of integrating stray capacitance that makes his work touch sensitive and interactive. Besides, circuit bent and stray capacitance, he also added other sounds like electronic horn, self-composed computer music and audio-CD which make a sound art.
Educated in Fine Arts at the Technological University of the Philippines, Salvador creates artwork that is both appealing to the eyes and feast for the ears. An artwork that can be both a museum piece and musical instrument as well.  At present, he is studying electronic and at the same time experiments and explores the ZPE (Zero-Point Energy) concept through the retrieval of electrical energy from vacuum to generate sound from steady electro-magnetic coils found in house-hold appliances.
Recently, Salvador was commissioned to make a musical score for an independent film “Rotonda” using sound art and his experimental musical instruments. His work was adjudged “Best Musical Score” in the 2006 Cinemalaya: Philippine Independent Film Festival held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Noel de Brackinghe: Almost solely responsible for introducing Drum n’ Bass to the Philippines in 1997 Noel has played extensively throughout Manila as a DJ.  Also part owner of the now defunct club; Kemistry, his dedication to promoting new sounds has remained firm..  A knack for bringing out the best in people has made him a successful and sought after producer and sound engineer. With a very eclectic musical taste he is easily able to translate how things should sound  into the technical know how in recording and sound engineering.  Noel has received nominations from the NU107 Rock Awards and the more prestigious Awit Awards for his production work.

Malek Lopez: A contemporary composer and graduate of Berklee music school in Boston, Malek studied film scoring but found his real joy to be sound design and synthesis.  With a penchant for obscure jazz and lounge Malek is equally at home tearing up the keyboard or guitar but finds his real pleasure in working with sequencers and twiddling knobs.  Malek is also probably the most competent synth programmer and sound designer in the country able to quickly translate the ‘sound in your head’ to a sound coming from a keyboard.  A further fascination with musical philosophers and modern classical composers often pushes Malek to explore the deeper depths of synthesis and composition.

Vanini Belarmino (Philippines/Germany) is an independent cultural producer/curator based in Berlin, Germany, specialising in international artistic collaborations. She received academic training in theatre arts, art history, European cultural policy and management. While working for the Asia-Europe Foundation’s Cultural Exchange section (2003-2007), she was responsible for the establishment of its performing art programmes such as I’mPULSE (music) and Pointe to Point (dance). She likewise managed ASEMUS (Asia-Europe Museum Network), an alliance of over 60 museums in the two regions. Vanini has spearheaded projects in countries like China, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Sweden, United Kingdom and Vietnam.

AETHER9 Performers:

Christiaan Cruz is a Southern California based photographer by trade.
Early studies in Cinema and modern music generated simple sound,
installation, video and computer pieces. This initial period focused
on the object material; visual, aural, and technical attributes. New
concerns in human interaction, connectivity, and appropriate design
have inspired new networked pieces; some of which have used water,
Jovian waves, and bouncing balls. They strive for a proper function
within contemporary networks. More than just objects and content, they
are functioning nodes of relevancy.

Chloé Cramer
Born in 1980 in Geneva (CH), she takes part in performing activities with
members of N3krozoft ltd. media ensemble since 1999. After several journeys
through former USSR countries and China, she enters the Belgian cinema
school IAD where she directs various kinds of video and film projects. She
works now as a videast, actor coach and assistant director.

Frauke Frech [DE]
Born in 1982 in Leipzig, Germany
Restless nomad, performance- and new media-artist currently lives in Kiel and Berlin.
Since 2003 studies in contemporary dance and new media.
She has joined the æther9 collective in 2008.
Mainly working collaboratively on-site and on-line.

Manuel Schmalstieg [CH] operates on the borderline between video, performance and software art. After experimentation in the fields of graphic novel, animation film and audio production that he carried out during his studies in Geneva and Krakow, he turns at the end of the nineties towards realtime video. He operates since 2001 as an undercover agent for the N3KROZOFT Ltd media group, and is managing the Aether9 online performance platform since 2007.

Paula Vélez [Columbia]
Graphic designer, media and video artist, VJ, teacher, assistant
director, super8 activist, musical and cultural projects management.
Started her audiovisual studies in Paris where she stayed for seven years
and studied cinema. Actually is an active member, with other artist
located in remote places, of Aether9, a communication and media-art
research group. She likes to play with home-made technology despite being
aware that it could end up with some terrible disaster or fire, but she trusts
her intuition. As a VJ she has been participating in city
activities for the last 4 years working with talents DJs, musicians and
good friends from the rock, electronic, electro-acoustic and
experimental scene. Also she has been actively participating in conferences and most
of the time as an artist at different festivals in Colombia and other places.

Kim Xupei [Taipei]
Network artist
Born 1977 in Hong Kong, Kim Xupei works as programmer and code artist with the N3krozoft Media Group. He is currently finishing his first novel, “Data Hammer”, planned for publication on Greyscale Press later this year.

Mari Keski-Korsu [Finland] (b. 1976) is an artist, initiator and organizer. She is interested in storytelling and moments that befall.  She explores i.e. nations as imaginary communities, tourism, presented identities and especially causalities of eco-social and structural changes in people’s everyday life. She works with mixed and locative media applying process oriented methods. She is/has been concentrated on i.e. net and video art, streaming happenings and live visual mixing. Her works has been shown around Finland and in several countries. She has a MA in new media (digital authoring) from University of Arts and Design Helsinki and BA in visual arts from Polytech of Western Lapland.

The HOUSE OF NATURAL FIBER, Yogyakarta, is a New Media art laboratory, founded in 1999. They concentrate on the principles of critique and innovation. Since the beginning, the house of natural fiber has consistently focused on cultural development and New Media art, running numerous New Media art projects and workshops. In every project we concentrate on interactivity with people and environments. Thinking forward, positive and creative is becoming a vision for this community. In the implementation of this vision, in every program, they work towards the development of art with technology. This desire to contemplate the future of technology and art, is an important endeavor for the technology itself.

A grand prize winner of the NCCA’s Websining Digital Art competition in 2007. Mannet Villariba explores his medium with an enthusiasm for electronics as it relates to the realm of sound and visuals. After a fine arts education, corporate environment, and with a self-confessed anti-synth ideology in his garage-band days, Villariba’s exposure on new media led to an advantageous and favorable understanding of these unforeseen forces underlying electronic sound with its mystical, ambient and chaotic appeal, eventually shifting his ideals, which in turn rejuvenates his expression in visual art as well.  Interactive visual interpretations of these forces are increasingly the main focus of his work. He actively participates in various performance art events locally as well as several festivals abroad, such as the Tupada Xing, Wunderspaze, Singapore  2006 / Nippon International Performance Art Festival, Japan, Summer 2007 / Asean Contemporary Art Exchange, Yangon Myanmar, January 2009 / Changwon Art Festival, South Korea, April 2009 / Gwangju International Performance Art Festival, South Korea, May 2009.

Tengal is a Manila-based interdisciplinary media artist, composer-musician, curator/producer, and filmmaker working with various mediums. He producers and organizes, as well as participates in various media art related projects in the Philippines and abroad. His work puts the focus on direct experience, risk-taking and personal interaction between artists and audience, and emphasizes the situational potential of live performance, the interplay of various media – sound and image, in particular – and candid exchange between sub-cultural and academic initiatives. He founded SABAW Media Art Kitchen – a not-for-profit, artist-run umbrella network and platform for all kinds of information and communication carried via modern electronic media focused specially in the region of South East Asia.
