I am 34 years old female, finally got the courage to fix my own teeth. I went to the Ortho today, their x-ray machine was broken, but they still put braces in my mouth, they said they will take the x-tray next visit.
Well, I fell like "Ugly Betty", lol, only differnce is, the black "Ugly Betty". I have the braces, the classes, and the adult look, but I must say I am a little pretty like "Ugly Betty" is. Wish me luck, I work at a high school, and I am going to return to work in a couple of weeks, I am going to shock alot of people there, lol. I will update often. I am in a little pain, but its ok as long as I dont apply to much preasure on the teeth. I hope it works.OI have a bunch of dental work to be done the gain the smile I need.
Looking for recommendations on salty foods for after surgery.
All easy to blend / liquid items are sugary.

Hi, I'm Yaz, I'm 17...
Kind've have a few questions. I'm due for surgery within the next two months, I don't know all the fancy names unfortunately, but I have an open bite and a mandible deformity of some kind, they broke my palatte and expanded it, they've done some skin grafting, a lot of orthodontic rearranging.
They're going to break my upper jaw to correct the open bite [I do know that's a class 2 on both sides, the surgeon said] and then break the lower jaw into segments to fit it into my face.
They told me they won't have to wire me shut, just a series of elastics--that I'd have to be on a strictly liquid diet for 6-9 weeks, the usual, and about loss of sensation in the lower facial areas.
I was wondering--Do any of you have any good tips on different kinds of liquids? The same old fruity drinks and whatnot would get old. And how long does the lack of sensation last, generally? My surgeon said it could take up to 6 months to fully regain feeling, and I just want to prepare. I'm excited and a little apprehensive. Just wanted to know what you all did to make your experience after surgery run smoothly? Anything you found particularly helpful.

I know it's dead here but I wanted to say hi. HI. I'm Lanie, 20 years old, and I'm 3 weeks post op from IVRO (that is, intaroral vertical ramus osteotomy) and Lefort I osteotomy. Good times. I was wired shut, and today's my appointment to get unwired... I'm pretty excited. After the first week things were much better. I never had a ton of swelling nor a lot of loss of sensation in my face; my upper lip and cheeks are a bit numb, as is the tip of my nose for some reason, but every day it's getting better. The swelling was in the side of my face and lower jaw, then it migrated to my cheeks, and I had a double chin until a few days ago. I guess I'm lucky that I didn't swell up with my wisdom teeth, so thus I didn't get a lot of swelling here. I had a bruise on the left side of my face on my lower jaw that bloomed during surgery, but otherwise I am unscathed! All my stitches have fallen out, they all came out after about 10 days. In three weeks I get desplinted and I can go back to school...yeehaw!
Update: approximately 8 weeks post op.
Sensation in my face has mostly returned! I'd say I'm 90% back to normal regarding sensation. I've had the most unremarkable recovery, which I can't really explain other than I'm relatively young, and I eat healthfully %99 of the time. How much of recovery is dependant on how well you look after yourself ? I don't know, but if it makes a great difference, than that would explain my lack of complications. I'm counting my lucky stars. Eating is a lot easier now, although I still can't quite muster the strength to bite into anything thick like crusty bread (baguettes...*sigh*) or sushi. But my bite strength has definitely improved. I'm sure in another 8 weeks it will be vastly improved once more.
