Adult with braces

I am 34 years old female, finally got the courage to fix my own teeth. I went to the Ortho today, their x-ray machine was broken, but they still put braces in my mouth, they said they will take the x-tray next visit.
Well, I fell like "Ugly Betty", lol, only differnce is, the black "Ugly Betty". I have the braces, the classes, and the adult look, but I must say I am a little pretty like "Ugly Betty" is. Wish me luck, I work at a high school, and I am going to return to work in a couple of weeks, I am going to shock alot of people there, lol. I will update often. I am in a little pain, but its ok as long as I dont apply to much preasure on the teeth. I hope it works.OI have a bunch of dental work to be done the gain the smile I need.

Questions, and personal story

Hello again! I'm somewhere around 7/8 months post op, and I had a couple weird questions for you guys. I'm still getting really bad tightness and joint pain, only on the right side--the surgeon said it probably is just the joint remodeling, but it's on and off and gets really bad, anti-inflammatory drugs don't seem to help. Anyone have something similar and figure out what it was?

I've also lost taste for a lot of foods and drinks I used to like. I can't stand soda anymore--I was more sensitive to the carbonation after my first surgery, and now after the second, it makes me burp anytime I take even a sip and hurts and tastes awful. Everything except coffee tasted weird directly after the operation, but I've cut a lot out near the end of the process.

I'm due to get my braces off sometime in May [scheduled the 5th, so two days after I turn 18!] :] I am amazingly excited.

That's my story, anyways. Hopefully it helps anyone who's going through anything similar! If you have any questions you can add me, too.

I've been researching and researching for anything that i might be able to do that isn't as expensive as what my dentist is talking about doing. I have horrible teeth, i'm not sure what all i wrong but i do know that i have a horrible open bite, along with very crowded teeth. My dentist said about taking out two teeth on each side then putting braces on. I was hoping i woulnd't have to do that because he said the braces would be around 3,500-4,000 dollars. Someone told me to get the whole top pulled and get a top denture. I am only 20 years old. But i don't know what to do. Someone also said that dental schools sometimes do free work. But i can't find many in PA, unless I'm not looking in the right spots. I have included pictures if ANYONE can give me ANY SORT of advice. Please help me, its very hard to eat like this sometimes since my mouth is so open i can't even bite into a sandwich!

Hi, I'm Yaz, I'm 17...

Kind've have a few questions. I'm due for surgery within the next two months, I don't know all the fancy names unfortunately, but I have an open bite and a mandible deformity of some kind, they broke my palatte and expanded it, they've done some skin grafting, a lot of orthodontic rearranging.

They're going to break my upper jaw to correct the open bite [I do know that's a class 2 on both sides, the surgeon said] and then break the lower jaw into segments to fit it into my face.

They told me they won't have to wire me shut, just a series of elastics--that I'd have to be on a strictly liquid diet for 6-9 weeks, the usual, and about loss of sensation in the lower facial areas.

I was wondering--Do any of you have any good tips on different kinds of liquids? The same old fruity drinks and whatnot would get old. And how long does the lack of sensation last, generally? My surgeon said it could take up to 6 months to fully regain feeling, and I just want to prepare. I'm excited and a little apprehensive. Just wanted to know what you all did to make your experience after surgery run smoothly? Anything you found particularly helpful.

I know it's dead here but I wanted to say hi. HI. I'm Lanie, 20 years old, and I'm 3 weeks post op from IVRO (that is, intaroral vertical ramus osteotomy) and Lefort I osteotomy. Good times. I was wired shut, and today's my appointment to get unwired... I'm pretty excited. After the first week things were much better. I never had a ton of swelling nor a lot of loss of sensation in my face; my upper lip and cheeks are a bit numb, as is the tip of my nose for some reason, but every day it's getting better. The swelling was in the side of my face and lower jaw, then it migrated to my cheeks, and I had a double chin until a few days ago. I guess I'm lucky that I didn't swell up with my wisdom teeth, so thus I didn't get a lot of swelling here. I had a bruise on the left side of my face on my lower jaw that bloomed during surgery, but otherwise I am unscathed! All my stitches have fallen out, they all came out after about 10 days. In three weeks I get desplinted and I can go back to school...yeehaw!

Update:  approximately 8 weeks post op.

Sensation in my face has mostly returned! I'd say I'm 90% back to normal regarding sensation. I've had the most unremarkable recovery, which I can't really explain other than I'm relatively young, and I eat healthfully %99 of the time.  How much of recovery is dependant on how well you look after yourself ? I don't know, but if it makes a great difference, than that would explain my lack of complications. I'm counting my lucky stars. Eating is a lot easier now, although I still can't quite muster the strength to bite into anything thick like crusty bread (baguettes...*sigh*) or sushi. But my bite strength has definitely improved. I'm sure in another 8 weeks it will be vastly improved once more.
