I am working from home today and tomorrow and then I am not working again until January. Feel free to be jealous, but don't tell me about it.

I wrote a little over 3000 words this weekend, and both days I made myself stop before my brain felt like a worn-out rag, so going back to the document would feel like a reward and not a chore. It also helped that I knew what scene I wanted to draft; the first day was all getting to that scene, which including Fun With Worldbuilding, and the second day was the scene and surrounding activity that was also worldbuilding detail. Not big details. Just ones I wanted to write about. I am now 20K into the draft of novella 3. It might go a little longer than the previous ones. I'm not sure yet. I can always trim it down, but since I'm trying to be looser about these, maybe I won't.

After the writing, I did some baking. Quiche with spicy halal beef sausage, chopped fine, and Colby cheese. A blueberry/cranberry crumble because the blueberries I bought were too sour and hard (and I like tart blueberries!) to eat raw. Sunday, I made shortbread dough using about half buckwheat flour, and with added miniature chocolate chips; I baked a batch in late afternoon with flaky kosher salt on top, and they were excellent. The chocolate chips do interrupt the dough texture, but baked, they melted in nicely. The next batch I bake, I'm going to try larger crystals of sea salt, so it's more visible and hits the tongue more.

We're tentatively planning to have two friends over the day after New Year's.

1. I got eggnog on my way home yesterday when also buying milk. I put some in my coffee this morning. Yummy.

2. Novella 3 is at about 7K now, and I hope to make significant progress as I am off from the dayjob for the whole week!

3. I made the mistake of bitterly reacting to a CNN Twitter thread last night and soon realized deletion was the better part of valor. Also some selective muting. I am fearing for the outcome of the trial of Arbery's killers, but at least the judge in that one seems less supremacist.

4. Those who add dedications into their work: do you put the reason for the dedication, or just the name? I've just been doing the name. Even when I did explanations, they were always brief and obscure.

5. Today's Google Doodle is Edmond Dede!

Friday's day off accomplishments were way more impressive than Thursday's.

I was a little stuck Thursday because I had decided what a big reveal should be, but I didn't know the reveal's details. I decided to get a good night's sleep and start again on Friday. At 4:17 am, my smoke alarm battery died and it began to make the sad very loud chirp while I was deeply involved in a dream, so I had to drag myself into wakefulness and get the ladder from downstairs and climb up to take down the smoke alarm and put in a new battery. Conveniently, I had a 9 volt battery on hand, but then I couldn't get the smoke alarm to latch into its base and finally gave up, planning to try again when I was more awake.

I managed to sleep in a little, meeting up with [personal profile] drinkingcocoa later than intended, but still before ten am. I brainstormed what might have happened to the character in question, some of the ideas very silly, and some in-jokes ([personal profile] drinkingcocoa: eaten by sharks!). Amazingly, this worked, and one of the ideas blossomed into a whole sequence of events, not all of which I would need to include.

So I started writing, finishing setting up this plot reveal, and then starting the conversation where the facts come to light. In the middle, we went out to Alif for injera wraps because they had tables outside and the weather was freaking gorgeous all day, bright blue skies and low humidity and comfortable temperatures. In the end, I wrote two thousand words, my best day on either of the novellas. (To be honest, I checked my wordcount near the end, and when I found I was less than a hundred words from two thousand, I went back in for the nice round number!)

We picked up The Niffler from school in the afternoon and visited a few shops. I rewarded myself for my fabulous writing day with a tiny blue glazed ceramic planter. This morning I transplanted my two rooted kalanchoe leaves into the new pot; these are the leaves I salvaged from the floors of Trader Joe's and Acme at different times. I have no idea if they will ever put out new leaves, but I find it very pleasing that they have good root systems after such inauspiciuous beginnings. That sounds like it ought to be a metaphor for something.

Net wordcount gain today, 1,339. Very satisfying.

I made Mexican chocolate brownies this weekend, minus the orange zest, because I had no oranges. I also wrote another thousand words (net gain), first on Saturday, and then again on Sunday.

I had the day off on Friday, which I used for a virtual doctor's appointment, laundry, mailing a letter, a postcard, and my ballot for the upcoming municipal election, a trip to the drug store, and watching the final episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Sam's super power is talking to people and having them listen.

This has felt like an unusually busy weekend! And I used to have weekends like this all the time!

I wrote one thousand and three words this morning, which included starting a new chapter. I also added some notes to the worldbuilding file. Saturday's work on the outline, mostly condensing it down, helped a lot with Sunday's work.

[personal profile] drinkingcocoa and a small octopod in a green bowl helped me.

Also, Friday night I Zoomed with a couple of friends from my old workshop, now spread across the breadth of North America, and that cheered me up immensely.

I wrote a little bit over the weekend, mostly removing stuff I'd decided I didn't need. Today and tomorrow I have vacation days, so this morning I started adding in words! I frontloaded some information I will need to revisit later, and did a necessary action scene. I was trying to avoid getting into too much detail on the action, because it's not the point of the story, it's just a step along the way. But I still had to use some significant detail because otherwise boring. I think that part of the draft is okay to be left alone for now. I can edit later. This morning's work was a net gain of about 850 words so far.

Now it's time to integrate the remnants of draft from the old part two, and move forward in the story. Eep.

ETA: 1205 for the day, total gains! That was, like, a normal writing day from the Before Times!

Sooooooooooooo last night's writing was less about 80 words, net, but mainly I was coming up with names for three characters and filing off some more serial numbers and easing in new ones, with thinking in between, and that process felt familiar. Also, I was tired from a long day online already, so I am not upset with myself.

I have figured out that this story is about what happens after the story is over, so it isn't a regular story, though it will need at least some aspects of a regular story so people will want to keep reading past the first sentence. I need to decide if the original story should stand on its own, followed by the sequel, or if I should moosh them together into one. The former seems more like what it should be, which dang it, means more words I have to write. But it makes more sense so far as traditional story shapes go.

First, we have the story following some massive failure, where the people are reunited and are handed a deus ex machina, followed by them spaceshipping off into the distance towards a new life. It needs more work on the ex machina part.

Second, we have the Domestic Porn story where they make a new life on a terraformed planet, and at least a couple of the characters get together romantically, and maybe some of their old comrades show up so I have fodder for additional episodes.

I'll look back at this post if I make further progress, and see if I stayed on this track.

I finished a story draft this weekend! Alas, it was not the story that is due October 1, but the one that is due December 1. After some struggling with the dreaded Blank Page on Saturday, I went with the one I already had ideas for, and eventually managed to add 620 words to 570 from back in 2010. Sunday, I wrote 1600 words, which is excellent! I am pleased with my accomplishment. I plan to print it out and look at it sometime this week, to see if it's any good. I also almost finished reading my review book; writing that review is my project for this coming weekend.

I have a tentative schedule for CapClave which involves me moderating All The Things, except I said I would not do the one at 10 pm on Friday night, given that I'm not staying in the hotel and am generally asleep by then. I'll post when I have confirmation of the schedule.

This is week three of treadmill running: walk 5 minutes, run 2 minutes walk 1 minute until you reach 27 minutes, then walk 3 minutes.

On the new story, I wrote 1500 words on Saturday and 1000 on Sunday - the draft isn't quite complete, but it's close to being done and ready for editing. Possibly lots of editing, as I am not satisfied with it yet.

I got a substantial way into the book I'm reading for review, and started doing some research reading for August story #2, the one for which I got an extension.

Plus, I spent some time on Saturday night dealing with computer files, old backup, etc., and the organization thereof.

Deadlines

I have an extension for one of my story deadlines, hooray! I am hoping I won't need it, but if I do, it's there. And the historical setting will be acceptable; I asked.

This weekend will need to be full of writing, as due to a head cold, and subsequent lack of interest in all activities, last weekend I wrote nothing. I have writing dates with a friend for both days, this weekend.

Also because of the cold, I haven't been to the gym in a week. This is very disspiriting, given how well I was doing, but I just felt crummy. I am planning to go back on Friday, so I can start back with the Plan where I left off, just a week later. Hopefully, I haven't lost too much ground. I can't tell if it would have been better to keep exercising through the cold or not; I tried that last time I had a cold, and ended up with bronchitis. So this time, I tried the "going to bed early every night" method. I seem to be improving, so maybe it was the right choice.

I finished up the emo epilogue-y romance story on Saturday, with light edits on Sunday, and submitted it; alas, I am pretty sure it is not suitable for that anthology, but I will let the editor decide. I am pleased that some version of it is finally complete, and assuming it's rejected, I can fancy it up a bit later for some other anthology, or put on my website or something.

On Sunday, I also wrote a story from scratch, a submission for that other August 1 deadline I wasn't sure I would make. It's a smidge over 1700 words, and unlike the Emo Epiloguey Romance, it is definitely erotica, which is good because that was what the editor asked for.

Statistics! )

After a terrible fiction-writing day on Saturday, C. gave me some tough love and I managed to finish the story on Sunday, and send it in for the July 1 deadline. A lot of my difficulty with it seemed to be that the story I wanted to write didn't feel entirely suitable for the anthology, so I got tangled up in trying to force it, which doesn't work well for me. But in the end, finishing it was the important part. I'll let the editor make the decision about whether it's suitable or not.

So, in the last six months, I have submitted:
1) "The Airplane Story" as a reprint, which was promptly rejected;
2) "No Sooner Met," a historical romance story that I edited from a discarded chapter of an unfinished novel;
3) "A Fistful of DeVille," a sequel to "The Magnificent Threesome";
4) "Lingerie," for a particular editor's last-minute need for a particular anthology, in second-person present from a male pov;
5) "Dahlia Calling," another experiment with second-person;
6) "Cinema Fantastique," which has more backstory than sex scenes.

Currently unfinished, but started in the last six months, are "Mirror Mirror Mirror" and "The Conductor" and "SubForum," which is the experimental format story I might have mentioned before.

There's a July 12th deadline I'm going to attempt, and then two for August 1.

I wrote about 1300 words on Saturday and 1800 on Sunday - not counting the stuff I deleted. For me, that's pretty good, and I hope it means I am back in my groove. It takes a lot of mental energy to achieve that groove and maintain it, but I definitely like being there.

The Sunday story draft needs editing, but will probably be pretty much okay as it is, so I can submit it for one of the July 1 deadlines. Saturday's story was an experimental format, an attempt at humor, which may not work for the anthology I originally meant it for. However, I might be able to break it up into two pieces, or trim it down into one (more likely) that might sell to a different anthology looking for flash-length. I need to read it over again and maybe print it out and read it that way, and ponder.

My goal is to submit two stories this month, so if the experimental thing seems to require more pondering, I will have to draft something else. Luckily, I think I have an idea that might work.

1. I turned in a review, early! I got to it early because it was the only paper galley I had on hand. The rest are all electronic, and I couldn't get the Kindle reader app to work this weekend, so I am just waiting for the new Kindle to be delivered this week (it is in transit). Hopefully, everything will transfer over just fine. I have officially de-registered the busted one.

2. Last week, I submitted two stories! One of them I'd been working on all month, for a June 1 deadline. Then I got sick and went to WisCon, so had to push a little to get it done. But I got it in on time, and right in the middle of the requested wordcount. Then an editor with whom I'd worked before needed some additional stories for a particular anthology with specific requirements. I dug out the beginning of something I'd worked on earlier this year - I didn't finish so missed the deadline I was going for - and was able to rework what I had to fit the requirements. Then I finished it really fast, coming in just above the minimum required wordcount. The editor liked it, but final decisions are with the publisher.

3. There are several calls for submissions due July 1. I meant to start on a story this weekend, but ended up with Stuff and a night of terrible sleep, so I had to postpone that a bit. But not too long. Maybe, just maybe, I could submit to two of those anthologies instead of just one.

4. The novel-in-progress file remains untouched and taunts me.

5. Hooray I wrote some things!

I guess I'd better report on the Writing front. Friday evening, I got a note from [community profile] pointoforigin who had read my zero draft. She was encouraging. She mentioned a couple of things she had wished to see (this is her subtle and nice way of telling you What Is Missing to Make This Story Awesome). One of them I knew, the other one pinged with a loud ping in my mind and set a cascade going.

So now I know what I can do with the middle of the book, which was somewhat vague in my mind. Roughly. I don't have details of scenes, just the outlines of them.

Saturday, I trimmed my slow opening paragraph, then set to work with my synopsis and chapter outline; I had to fit one scene in fairly early, so my new idea could be stuck onto the end of the current draft. That one scene re-interprets the subsequent scenes. I ended up with a net gain of 327 words, and that was it for the weekend - but now I am letting my backbrain chew on it, so I can get back to work on Saturday morning.

I have too many subsidary characters (as usual) and will no doubt have to collapse some of them into each other. The characters sit around and talk too much. I haven't taken full advantage of my setting. But the thing is not as bad as a I neurotically imagined at this stage, which means everything.
oracne: turtle (Default)
I have officially begun writing a new novel. Currently, it is 807 words long including title and my address at the top. That is 807 more words than I had on Friday.

Saturday morning, I looked over the 7-8 page synopsis I wrote just over a year ago and made some edits. I also started a file of notes, so that I could compile all the worldbuilding I have so far and brainstorm some more stuff. I settled on names for the two protagonists, at last.

Sunday morning, I attempted to craft a one-page synopsis from the long one, and got down to one page. (Note I say nothing of its quality.) Then I started the actual story. With a point of view and little drips of worldbuilding and everything.

I am supposed to have a writing date with a visiting friend on Saturday. I plan to Write More.

Paper!

I have achieved a printout of my story draft, the one that's due February 1. This is the part where I read it all in one go, all of it laid out before me, and see where the holes are (and in this case, I know I need a better ending, because right now it has a zero-draft ending). I make notes about larger things I need to change, and I do line edits, and occasionally I move things around. Then I enter the changes in the electronic file; depending on how many changes, I might do another pass on paper. In ideal circumstances, I would always do that, but I confess I don't, always.

My plan is to turn the story in on Monday, at the latest.
