supposed to leave orlando last night, 8pm.
cue "megastorm" (thats what weather channel dubbed it). canceled. no flights to philly until 2pm today.

i picked out my wedding dress!
and oh noes!! i manage to pick a dress that is of course, from an unadvertised line by the designer, and alas, after 2 days of searching on the internets, i can find every damn style # from that line BUT mine :)

i didn't have a total AHAH OMG moment, but let me tell you, i thought about that dress all day sat AND sun, and even DREAMED about it sat night. when i saw it on me for a second time i was like, "oh hell yes."
my mom is picking up the tab for the dress, so i'm coming back up to NJ in two weeks to make the deposit. the dress can take up to EIGHT months to come in (unless its in stock, then it's like, a month) so i won't have it in hand until possibly JUNE 2007! ack! but it's worth the wait- the wedding REALLY feels real now- it's been hard since it's not until january 2008, and even though i have to wait for the dress, i still have it picked out. the two biggest things- reception/ceremony venue and dress are all done.

Beloit, Wis. - A rite of autumn is under way with the arrival of first-year students at thousands of colleges and universities for registration. Most 18-year-old students entering the class of 2010 this fall were born in 1988. They grew up with a mouse in one hand and a computer screen as part of their worldview. They learned to surf the internet as they learned to read. While they were still in their cribs, the 20th century started to close as the Berlin Wall came down, the Soviet bloc disintegrated, and frequent traditional wars in Latin America gave way to the uncontrolled terrors of the Middle East.
Each August since 1998, as faculty prepare for the academic year, Beloit College in Wisconsin has released the Beloit College Mindset List. A creation of Beloits Keefer Professor of the Humanities Tom McBride and Public Affairs Director Ron Nief, it looks at the cultural touchstones that have shaped the lives of todays first-year students.
According to McBride, this years entering students form a generation that has always been connected and is used to things happening in real time, like live satellite coverage of revolutions and wars, instant messaging and movies on demand. They expect solutions for every problem, from baldness to diseased organs. To the chagrin of teachers and parents, theyve developed their own generational means of communication.
The Beloit College Mindset List is used by educators and clergy and by the military and business in their efforts to connect with the new generation. Beloit creates the list to share with its faculty in anticipation of the first-year seminars and orientation. It is an important reminder to faculty, some of whom are only a Ph.D. older than their students, that what we call hardening of the references can set in quickly, according to Nief. "It is meant to be thought-provoking and fun, yet accurate. It often provides the base for good opening seminar discussions as faculty and students address the challenges of examining important issues from differing perspectives."
BELOIT COLLEGE'S MINDSET LIST®
FOR THE CLASS OF 2010
Members of the class of 2010, entering college this fall, were mostly born in 1988. For them: Billy Carter, Lucille Ball, Gilda Radner, Billy Martin, Andy Gibb, and Secretariat have always been dead.
1. The Soviet Union has never existed and therefore is about as scary as the student union.
2. They have known only two presidents.
3. For most of their lives, major U.S. airlines have been bankrupt.
4. Manuel Noriega has always been in jail in the U.S.

i'm so glad i've found this community- while it might not be something i regularly attend, since i now have ties to both oseh shalom in laurel and capital kehillah where rabbi miller leads services, it's nice to know i have somewhere else to go, and that there is a vibrant, energetic, young professional jewish community just off of the metro every 3 fridays.
i really needed tonight. i'm so happy i went, despite terrible stomach troubles the whole metro ride in, and my car deciding it doesn't want to cooperate with me anymore.
