Awkward Introductory Post

Hi ! No one has posted in this community in a while, so I thought I might.

My name is Liz. I'm an "Administrative Assistant" (secretary) at one of the largest GMAC owned Real Estate offices in Michigan. I'm also one of three personal assistants to our top agent in the company, (hence the user name- "Holly's gopher"). I also have a paralyzing fear of talking to people. Making my job choice that much more amusing.

The market in Michigan is awful, everyone who’s selling loses like $20,000, and everyone who is buying acts like they're the Pope. It's fun. And by fun I mean I keep a flask in my bra.

My one upside is hearing really amusing stories of really, really insane people. Well, two, people bring me pie a lot....

Also I know some of the Pistons live. Holly left today to go drop off some flyers to the subdivision Chauncey Billups lives in.

Me: “Really?”

Holly: “Yeah. I think he would want to live in a gated community anyway.”

Me: “So people can’t randomly put stuff in his mailbox?”

Holly: “…yeah.”

So yeah, Hi.

introductions, yay.

So, my name is Kan. I work in the receiving/stockroom office at my campus. Basically I take the purchase requests with their corresponding invoices--pink slips--make up stock #'s for the items--b/c shop workers are too lazy to put down the code for what they're ordering, and put that crap into the inventory system, then check it out for the jobs... yeah... I sit here alot. I found this community by searching LJ communities for boredom. lol They all look pretty dead.. so I guess everyone but me has found something to do.

Data Entry

Okay, so I work in an office (obviously) as a sub-assistant and data entry is a big part of my job. I don't mind it-- I listen to music and mostly it's pretty chill--the least stressful part of my day.

So, anyway, I've been seeing all of these online ads for "doing data entry at home!! Earn extra cash!!" I figured that could be a good way to make up for my lack-luster paychecks at something I'm already familiar with. Obviously, I don't trust them when I have to pay X number of dollars for "training materials" but does anyone know of *actual, legitimate* companies that do work-from-home data entry? I could use a few extra dollars.

Girlie Action?!? LOL...

Today I was supposed to call a company that manufactures shoulder pads to see whether we could buy some for the department. Well, they must have changed their number. The message said,

Thank you for calling Girlie Action! If you know the name of the girl you'd like to speak to...

Curious.

Quick little question but it would mean a great deal to me to get some good answers.

I aspire to be an administrative professional. What kind of post-highschool education did you go through to get the skills necessary for this job? I know there are different kinds of administrative professionals, so for argument's sake please tell me where you work today (medical building, regular office building, etc).

Seriously, it means a lot :)

xposted around a bit for as many answers as possible.

I've just started work in an office [just finished week 2] and I feel like my soul's been sucked out of me. The people are nice but the work is just so boring I could die. Today I organized a few files then I had nothing to do for the rest of the day, it may sound like fun to some of you "easy money" I hear some of you say but dude I need something to do to make the day go faster. Argh, how comes 9-5 takes so long?

Power outage story

Last year for Secretaries' Day, my bosses (the professors) got me a cute little card that had a little cartoon secretary bustling around doing stuff. It included captions like "Collate! Stuff! Type! File! Dash!" and ended with "Leap tall buildings in a single bound!"

They apparently forgot one: "Control the city power grid!"

Today there was a big storm and my bldg. lost power for about 30 minutes. About halfway through this lovely little blackout, I was trying to sort mail in the semidark, when a group of students trooped up into my office and asked me when the power was going to come back on.

"Umm, I have no idea," I said.

"But we need to use the coooooopier!"

"I think the commons still has power; you can use the one there."

"But yours is free, and we're in a huuuuuuuurrrrrryyyyyy!"

*headdesk*

I had to explain to them again that I had absolutely no power and no idea when it was coming back on. Maybe they shouldn't have put off their project until the last minute? Or maybe they shouldn't be so dependent upon the departmental copier anyway, as I only let them use it out of the kindness of my heart and could easily charge them or just not let them use it at all.

But apparently, I have the mad skillz to magically make the power come back on, or at least predict when it will.
