Ollie doesn't like to be picked up without his approval.
When I want to lift him, I say "scoop?" and give him a second to react- either stay still or move away- before making contact. If he pulls back and I grab him anyways, or if I don't give him enough time to react, he will tense up, give me a very distinctly-pitched "myEAh", and then bite me as soon as I put him down. This feels fair
*I* don't like having a bathroom buddy when I'm on the shitter. He's allowed to play in the bath or join me in the shower or cool off by laying his belly out over the top of the toilet tank, but if i need to use the pot, he's gotta wait outside.
NOW, when Ollie is in the bathroom when I need the toilet, I tell him "Privacy please", and it's 50/50 whether he'll deign to get up an leave, and he usually takes his sweet time doing it. If he takes too long to respond, I will say "scoop?", and then carry him to his perch outside.
There has never been a situation in which Ollie has been: occupying the bathroom while I needed the toilet, refusing to leave, and declining to be carried out.
Today I needed to use the toilet.
It was somewhat urgent.
I walked into the bathroom, where Ollie was hiding from the heat. I told him, "Privacy, please."
Remember that this was urgent.
Ollie did not vacate.
I asked again, to no affect. And so, because this was a time-sensitive mission, I told him, "scoop."
And then, perhaps just a little too hurriedly, picked him up.
I received three warnings of my fate in immediate succession.
1: Ollie tensed up from neck to butt, clenching his whole spine the way he does when he has been lifted without his consent. I knew then that I was going to be bit as soon as his feet hit a solid surface, as is custom.
2. Ollie said "myEAH!", an appropriate rebuke, and an expected one, but now with the gift of hindsight I feel as though I may recall a subtle undertone of panic.
3. Moving to set Ollie down and preparing to dodge, I felt his stomach under my hand and thought, "that's a bit firmer than normal". At this exact moment there was a gurgle.
Just as I was almost safe, my sweet and beautiful boy ripped absolute ass directly onto my chest and face, which was so alarming to all parties that he actually forgot his revenge bite and startled himself.
We are now sitting in silence on opposite sides of a bathroom door.
I cannot describe the atmosphere that this has created in our home
