A true breath of sanity in the mad world of Northern Irish politics is the weekly Portadown News, edited by Newton Emerson. I've just been spending a few minutes looking over his recent election coverage. His piss-take of the Ulster Unionist Party's dire election slogan "Decent People...Vote Ulster Unionist" is hilarious but also (for obvious reasons) made me wince:

His commentary on news coverage of the Pope's death takes a typically local angle:

And he manages to make me glad to have got the hell out of the place, while at the same time bringing home how much I miss that vicious sarcasm which constitutes the "crack":

And on similar lines, from quite an early point in the Portadown News' run:

Back at the end of 2001, Newton Emerson annoyed certain people in Northern Ireland politics to the extent that they managed to get him sacked from his job. The reward has been that he is now one of the most visible political commentators in the media. Long may he continue.

*falls off chair laughing* Thanks so much for posting this :D

I totally agree - Emerson is truly fantastic, he has a column in the Irish News every Saturday which makes a welcome change from all the 'in-depth' stuff :D

The original of the "Decent People..." poster seems to be on every single lampost along the A2 to Belfast City Airport. And I mean every single one. Ironic that the spoof version would actually be more appropriate on this route.

Actually, it was a refreshing change to see some election posters whilst in South Antrim - not just for Westminster, but for the local elections too. I don't think I've seen more than 1/2 dozen on the mainland over the past few weeks, and the number of miles I travel, I must have been driving through some marginals at some stage.

By the way, the Dalek smileys are great, but I'm not sure about the colour scheme - did you get a cheap rate from the same person who did www.sdlp.ie?

The Portadown News will be sorely missed. Newton Emerson is the funniest and most insightful commentator in/on Northern Ireland. Try googling this for transcripts of his Irish News columns:
