Kittens: Misty and Peaches

Day 2: Chewed Art Print

Day 2: Chewed Art Print

One of my gorgeous Linda Bergkvist art prints fell off the wall - and by the time I discovered it, the kittens had already had their fun with it. Oops! Chew- and teeth marks at the top and sides, but as Alison pointed out to me, nothing I can't guillotine off before re-framing it. No holes in the middle of the picture or anything, thank god!

The one with the Public Transport

Growing up in the Netherlands, I never realized how spoiled I was. After living in Northern Ireland for 4 1/2 years, I totally do now.

The Netherlands is an extremely well-organized country. Except no one living there seems to realize it. I certainly didn't! Take for example public transport. In Holland, people complain about it. Trains are running late, buses aren't clean enough, it's too expensive. A train runs 5 minutes late, and I would have been the first to whine and complain about it, 5 years ago. Never mind the hundreds of trains that do run on time, the one that is 5 or 10 or 30 minutes late would make me forget all about the rest.

To compare, I shall tell you a little story of what happens on a typical bus ride from my town to Lurgan, where I go to college one day a week. The bus I prefer to take leaves at 9.30AM. Usually, it will arrive in town around 9.20, 9.25. But it will be parked across the road for a good 5 minutes, if not more - I think they might change drivers or something, cause the Ulster Bus office is right across the street as well. Normally, the bus will then drive around the roundabout to get to my side of the street anywhere between 9.30 and 9.45. Yes - I have watched the bus being 15 minutes late even though it was parked across from me the whole time.

Anyways, when the bus comes to my stop, the driver parks it and gets out. There's a little shop next to the bus stop that sells magazines, newspapers and candy bars. The driver, not even bothering to lock the doors, enters the shop, and reappears 5 minutes later while chewing on a candy bar and reading the paper with one eye. THIS WHILE IT IS ALREADY 9.40!! He'll get back on the bus, spread the paper out over the steering wheel while scanning the headlines, and when he has finished his candy bar, he'll finally start letting people on.

The first time this happened, I was standing at the bus stop impatiently tapping my foot. I was beyond shocked to see the driver go into the store, and even more to see him reading the paper. Like, he was 15 minutes late already!!!! But when I looked around at the others waiting for this same bus, no one seemed in the least surprised or shocked. In fact, no one seemed to really care. And none of the passengers made a remark to the driver about his being late. Not a single person.

Also, let's not forget the time my bus and a bus coming from the opposite direction stopped in the middle of a country road, with the two drivers opening their windows and having a jolly little chat with each other for a good 4 minutes. I was nervous about other cars, but again, I seemed to be the only one.

Now, if a bus in the Netherlands was 15 minutes late and the driver took even more time out to buy himself a snack, you can count on it that every single passenger would be complaining to him. In fact, several would probably contact the bus company, and it would be entirely possible that the driver would get fired. But here? No one even raises an eyebrow. Dude, we should be lucky buses are even going - it's like no one expects them to be on time. No one seems to be in a hurry, either.

I am getting used to this mindset now, but it certainly is a world of difference from Holland. And the funny thing is, I can't even really decide which one is better. Sure, Holland sounds better. More buses and trains, and most leave on time. But everyone is always in a hurry, always stressed, and people have a real habit of whining and complaining about everything. Here, there are only a few trains, nowhere near as many buses as in Holland, and the buses we do have all look like they have been in use since the '70s (I'm not even exaggerating here), but everyone is relaxed, people always have a smile on their face and time for a little chat, and in general, they seem to be in a far better mood. I don't know....but I might be leaning to the relaxed and friendly attitude - even if it means I am now always running late as well. ;)

The one with The New Shows

It's that time of the year again: the start of the new television season. I am as itching as any American to view certain shows, and since I still don't have any TV channels, I sure as hell am not going to wait till they start showing on TV here. But because it takes a wee while to download an episode, I waited out the first few weeks, reading reviews of many of the new shows to see which ones sounded like they'd be really good. In the end, I went ahead and got the first episodes of Heroes, Jericho, and The Nine, as well as the new season openers of Lost and Battlestar Galactica. So far, I have not been disappointed! Note: The below is pretty much spoiler-free.

Jericho. The premise of this show (small American town tries to survive after what might have been a nuclear explosion, but no one really knows for sure what is going on) sounded really interesting and had loads of potential. I wasn't too crazy about the pilot though. Too many characters, and a plot that wasn't very suspenseful in spite of the disasters happening! Episode 2 was a bit better - more suspense, and episode 3 was better than that again. There are a few small niggling things I don't like about this show, a few characters that really get on my nerves, but as long as I continue to enjoy each episode more than the previous ones, I am willing to give this show a try. :)

The Nine. The critics are all raving about this show, calling it the best one of the new season, which was what piqued my interest. The premise also sounded intriguing: nine people are held hostage for 52 hours, and try to pick up their lives after the ordeal is over - all the while we are completely clueless as to what really happened in those 52 hours, and we will find out bit by bit. I love stuff like that, where you have to read between the lines and do a lot of thinking yourself. Again, I wasn't blown away by the pilot. There are a lot of characters that had to be introduced and back story to be setup. I am really hoping that in episode 2 and 3 they'll be able to get down to more character development. I am still kind of interested in this show, the pilot introduced enough sub plots and mysteries, but it'll have to get a bit more interesting for me to keep watching this one.

Heroes. Now this is the show I'd called the best one of the new season. I LOVED the pilot, LOOOVED the second episode, and LOOOOOOOOOOOOVED the third one. The premise about ordinary people discovering they have extraordinary powers and how they cope with that has been done before, but somehow Heroes finds a way to make it feel fresh. I loved seeing everyone discovering their powers, and I also love that they were all at different stages of discovering. Some were fully aware of their powers and experimenting with them to see how far they could go, others suspected something about them was different but had no idea what, and others again had no idea they have any powers. The 3rd episode ended on a real surprise/cliffhanger that totally made me scream out loud at the TV, and I so cannot wait to see what happens next!

Lost. OMG I have been pining for new episodes of Lost! The season premiere didn't let me down. Within 5 minutes my mouth was hanging open in surprise and it took me a good 15 minutes to recover from that surprise. I wasn't too crazy about yet another Jack episode - he is far from my favorite character. But the bits taking place on the island were intriguing enough to keep me going. I want to know what happened to Kate (did you see the state of her wrists??) and who Karl is and what the hell is going on!! And also, what all the other characters are up to? Hurley! Claire! Locke! Sun! Cannot wait for next week!

Battlestar Galactica. This is without a doubt my favorite show on TV at the moment. Last season ended with such a cliffhanger, and I have been waiting 5 months to see what happens next! The season premiere, a double episode YAY, did not let me down. All my favorite characters, but all changed by what happened to them in the past year and a half. Relationships changed, situations changed, and it's almost like we're meeting a new set of people! New things to discover about them - I am so intrigued about lots of things and I have many questions. This episode rocked though - even though I had sky-high expectations, it met them all. The last scene was like, OMG!!!! worthy, gave me chills and goosebumps and made me feel slightly sick, and once again, made me scream at the TV when the credits came up. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT AND I NEED TO KNOW NOOOOOWWW. Waiting another week is torture, I swear. I love and hate this show at the same time!

Short summary: after a few years of very little good stuff on TV, it seems good shows have finally returned! For the first time since Buffy and Angel were canceled, I am excited about more than one or two shows. This makes the fangirl in me very happy!

The one with my 25th Birthday

Quarter of a century old now. It's weird - I totally feel 25, and at the same time, I totally don't. I bet I'll keep calling myself 24 for another while cause I keep forgetting I am 25 now!

My birthday was lovely though, calm and relaxed, just as I wanted. I slept in, opened my presents and cards over breakfast, went out for a bike ride with my mom in the afternoon (lovely weather and sunshine), and went to the cinema with :alison and :brian in the evening.

I got a whole stack of cards, and many lovely presents. Thanks especially to my family, to :alison and :brian and their parents, to :susan for her presents, to :vikki for her presents, to my dad, stepmom, and grandparents on both sides for their monetary contributions, and to everyone who sent me a birthday email or left a birthday comment!

Also, I know of at least one present that is still on its way here (*winks at Saffron*) - and I am still dying of curiosity to find out what it is!!

The one where I Am Sightseeing Again

With my mom still staying with me, I've been doing a lot of sightseeing again. We're mostly trying to do things I haven't just done with my brother or aunt, which makes it cooler for me too.

We did a drive up the Antrim coast (where I hadn't been before), but it was quite foggy, so although the views were gorgeous, the photos didn't come out too well. We also did some biking and walking close to my house, and we spent all day in Belfast Thursday. It's the City Hall 100th anniversary, so we did a free guided tour. The tour itself was great, and I was amazed it was free too, you can really tell Belfast is trying to increase tourism.

The building itself is gorgeous and very elaborate. I uploaded a bunch of photos to Flickr that I took - but I took many more that I haven't had a chance to look at yet. Not enough time in a day!

This afternoon my mom and I are going down to Sprucefield (she looves the big Marks & Spencer there) - and tomorrow of course is my birthday. So that's my weekend filled!

I have no real plans for tomorow though, aside from catching a movie at the cinema. I prefer low-key birthdays to big and stressful ones, so hopefully tomorrow will be a nice and relaxing one. :)

The one where My Mom Is My Guest

My mom is staying with me at the moment, and that means that now all of my close relatives have stayed with me the past summer: my dad and stepmom, my brother, my aunt, and my mom. I guess they all enjoy my new house as much as I do. ;)

It's a bit strange, having her stay here. She's a guest in my house now, my own house - and I feel like such a grownup lol. It's great to have her here though, and have some quality time together. We don't have anything big planned - just hanging out, maybe going to Belfast and Dublin for a day, stuff like that. She's staying for over two weeks, so she'll be here for my birthday as well. :D

Speaking of which, I can't believe I'm turning 25 in 8 days.

25. How weird does that sound. That's like, late twenties. Closer to 30 than it is to 20. *shudders* Something I prefer not to think about too much - although, on the other hand, it's strange to think how time has flown. This time five years ago, I was starting my sophomore year in college, hating it, and making plans to visit :alison in Ireland for the first time. It seems like yesterday instead of 5 years ago. It's true what they say, time does start to run faster as you're getting older. I think I'm finally starting to notice it now.

Disney: Alice

The one with The Crocodile Hunter

Just read on the internet that Steve Irwin passed away. Also known as The Crocidile Hunter. I loved that show and watched it many an afternoon after coming home from school. He always seemed like a really nice guy - it's a shame his love of dangerous animals became fatal for him.

He was a great asset for Australia's wildlife, and introduced many people, including myself, to how beautiful and special Australia's native flora and fauna are. RIP Steve. :(

The one where A Week Flew

I'm sitting in Dublin Connelly station, typing this. Connelly is the main train station in Dublin, and Brian and I are just back from another business meeting. We're a bit too early for the train back though (it goes in about an hour's time), hence the wait and me popping open my laptop.

My aunt went home yesterday, after staying with me for six days. We had a great time, even though we didn't do anything special. We didn't even go into Belfast for a day like we had sort of planned - I was just too busy. But we had a great time just staying at my house. It's so nice to have a guest room and to be able to have people over for a while! We watched movies (I have loads of movies she still needs to see), and we took walks, into town as well as into the hills. Usually I go and stay at her house for a few days every year between Christmas and New Years, so it was nice to have her as a guest for a change! :D

So after my brother and my aunt, my mom is the last one to be coming over to stay with me. ;) She's flying in next week, and staying for about 2 weeks. Should be loads of fun as well - she's got a new digital compact camera, so it'll be fun showing her how to use it and playing with it.

Other than that - not a lot of new stuff! Still very busy with work - although the end of one of the projects I am working on is in sight now, I hope. It all means more money though, so it's all good.

Oh, and can I just say again how much I HATE crackers? I don't know what's going on, but there has been a significant increase in hacks on my servers in the past few weeks. And not just me - a handful of people I know who aren't even on my servers got hacked as well in the past month. Grrr. It's such a waste of my time to have to clean up the mess they made - not to mention the inconvenience it poses to my customers. :(

Anyway - quick, think of something nice to say before I get all angry again! Oh yes! 24! Now there's a TV show I have always kind of wanted to watch but never really got into. That is, until :alison borrowed the season 1 box sets off someone, watched a few eps, and then raved about it so much I borrowed disc 1 from her to see what all the fuss was about. Needless to say, now I am hooked too. The cliffhangers are just excruciating, and I find it very hard to watch just one ep - I'll easily watch 2 or 3 or even 4 in a row. I'm about 3/4 through season 1 now, and it is very excellent. Can't imagine watching it on TV though, I'd die if I had to wait a whole week for the next episode every time!!
