Why is Viikii Such a Bitter Old Woman?

I've come to the realization that yes, there are a ton of twelve-year-olds surfing the paradise I know as Viikii (a subtitling site that has revolutionized the process), and they are hella' irritating, but somehow easier to deal with than the vengeful, cankerous old hag that the administration and staff have become.

I appreciate, beyond a shadow of a doubt, all the of endless effort that is put into the videos Viikii translates. I know, as a segmenter, exactly how much time is spent pouring over a scene again and again in order to get it Just Right. It's tedious work and it can be frustratingly unrewarding sometimes, to the point where you feel like bashing your keyboard into tiny bits is the only reasonable response. That said, I think Viikii may be in dire need of some Valium as of late, because they're not just lashing out at the idiots who impede and annoy them anymore, it's anyone who speaks up while they're in a bad mood.

I've been following this drama that's still airing in Korea right now (Sungkyunkwan Scandal) on Viikii, and recently they've been having some trouble with KBS, the station that airs it. Generally the thing to do when one of the stations gets finicky about Viikii translating and airing their shows is to have the show licensed on Viikii. The station slips in a few commercials before the episode starts and everything equals out. Well, I'm not sure if KBS is just being difficult or they really don't want to hand over the license but Viikii's been told to put the channel on hiatus. Being the straight and narrow folk that they are, they stopped putting the translated Sungkyunkwan videos on the channel and hid them in a user account instead, then handed out the link to anyone who asked for it.

Of course, this was all very hush-hush, what with the gleaming red message on their homepage informing everyone to ask the staff for the videos.

Yes, I am rolling my eyes.

So Viikii hands out the links, but tells the hordes of leeches to keep quiet (HAH. Redundant much.) about it. And they don't, because, as previously explained, they're all twelve-year-olds. KBS eventually happens upon the link, finds the videos, and takes them down.

Then a few members of the Sungkyunkwan staff throw a temper-tantrum in which anyone asking for the videos is berated and basically told to STFU. Now, admittedly, the person at the forefront of this tantrum eventually realized what they sounded like, apologized, and took down their comments, which was nothing short of miraculous to me after all the asshattery I've witnessed on that site. Clearly this person just got too frustrated to deal and took it out on others, but they saw exactly what they were doing afterwards, which makes them a rational person.

Most of of the Viikii staff don't notice, or just don't care.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is:

Viikii, it's alright if you get angry with the idiocy that happens on/in/around some of your channels. Anyone would. What you need to do is just chill. Just walk away from your computer, or turn it off, or unplug it, or drop it out a window. Whatever. Get up and do something else to take your mind off the problem, because I'll tell you honestly that it's not going to go away. The amount of stupidity that has bombarded the messaging boards on that site is truly staggering in proportion, and until you're cool with ignoring it, the best course of action is to spend your time doing something else.

Because really, who wants to spend time doing something that pisses them off unless they're getting paid?

Also, if you've gotten to the point where you don't care whether or not you sound like a bigot, then you need to stop entirely, and have someone squish your ego down to the size of an itty bitty pebble. Regardless of whether your a QC, or a Super Segmenter, or the person who runs the site, there's no point to inciting anger in others just because you may be in charge. It makes you a jackass, and in the words of Kim Pine, "If your life had a face, I would punch it."

Sincerely,
Nen

KDrama: Will It Snow for Christmas? Review

This was written a while back and not posted due to my neurotic tendency to think everything I accomplish is garbage for at least three months after. This would not be a drama I suggest to those just starting out, but the summary may be worth a read. Up to you, really.

Ps, I now officially hate LJ cut, if only because I can never seem to do it correctly. Honestly, shouldn't they make something akin to a child-proof cap for people like me to ensure this double-cut thing doesn't happen?

The Chuno Update

So after watching fourteen episodes of the Kdrama Chuno, I have to affirm my previous assessment- fantastic fighting scenes (if not a little artsy. Some of those flips were purely for dramatic flair) with a passable storyline and fine acting on the part of Lee Da Hae. The only thing I have to say that might warn people away from this is that females aren't really portrayed in a strong light so far as I've watched, and Lee Da Hae's character is the epitome of a damsel in distress.

Every fight scene where she's present, I can't help but see openings for her to do something besides stand awkwardly to the side. It's so agonizing to watch her. The secondary female character has a bit more sass to her at least, but she's only been in one fight so far and all she could do was step on Random Thug's back while he was already down.

They do have one female character who participates in full fledged fights but -surprise, surprise- she's a villain. An assassin, to be more specific. I was kind of hoping they'd pull a full character reversal for her, and Da Hae's character would end up becoming her student in learning the ways of the ninja, and they'd walk off into the sunset together to a future of fighting crime and promoting feminism.

No such luck, it seems.

In any case, I don't want to think about the message these roles are supposed to be sending their audience. Meek and subservient women are back in, I guess? Whatever happened to the Choon Hyang type? Give us back our moxy female, please; we miss her badly.

UPDATE:

Apparently the writer for Chuno has been getting a lot of backlash for Da Hae's character on message boards, and even Da Hae herself has come right out and said she's not too fond of the girl. It seems the masses want her to be A) less pretty, B) more active, and C) sassy. The sassy and more active, I get (while the less pretty just weirds me out) and surprisingly so does the writer, because in some recent interviews he responded to the criticism by saying the character is still developing with the story, and while audiences may not like her now, eventually she will grow into a person they will find merit in.

Or maybe this is just the writer's way of fooling viewers into watching the last ten episodes. Who knows.

Coming Tele for the New Year: Chuno

I try to keep pretty good track of what's coming and going on television, not just with the Western world but also Korea, and while browsing dramawiki I stumbled across this little gem:

The synopsis says it's mostly about the romance, but holy mother of sweet butter tarts do those action scenes look awesome. I find myself not caring about the relationshippy plots most dramas serve up after watching that- let's have some sword fights, if you please. The one scene at the end of the trailer where all three men are battling it out is somehow reminiscent of the Kmovie Duelist to me, and I still get chills watching that film.

It may be too soon to say, but I think I will love this drama.

Besides the three male characters (who I already love from previous kmovies and dramas), the female lead is also a popular name in the entertainment industry: Lee Da Hae. She's mostly known for her dramas, the most popular being My Girl, which leads me to the only catch in this situation. Lee Da Hae has only ever played fluffy roles. (EDIT: okay, after doing a little research I've discovered Da Hae was in East of Eden, which was anything but fluff from what I've heard. I'll change my assessment from 'only fluffy roles' to 'I've only ever seen her play fluffy roles'. Feel free to inform me of her performance on the off chance you've watched EOE.)

Don't get me wrong, she can spout tears just as easily as Choi Ji Woo, but when it comes to more serious drama, in this case being Chuno, I really have no idea how she'll do. I've only ever seen her play light, happy characters with some small bouts of sadness in their generally Cinderella-ish lives.

I may be worrying for nothing; she'll probably be great. And even if she isn't, I've got all those lovely action scenes to distract me, no?

Harry Potter Fic: Spurring The End

Title: Spurring the End
Char: Hermione, ???
Summary: A man is asking a question, and for once she doesn't have the answer.
A/N: Inspired by Fischerspooner's Wednesday (the first line) and zeegrindylows' Where Your Treasure Is (brilliant bit of work, btw).  I'm unsure as to whether I want this to be a one-shot (I abhor writing one-shots) or a novel length fic.
Rated: T (violence)

Ps, here's the link for zeegrindylows' fic. If you're a fan of Hermione/Snape, it's a must.
