I so believe in this Group. I despise it when I'm looked down upon when I "seemingly" don't appear to act as a lady should act. And....well....It pisses me off to no end.
I mean why are we supposed to act a certain way? It's not the 1800's or anything! I am free to be who I am. And I express myself when I can. It's not right to discriminate me solely based on the fact that I am Female.
I mean. When I play in sports, Sometimes I'm not passed the ball...I once asked a guy, "Why don't I get the ball thrown to me?! I was wide open!" He replied with someething that was like, "It's cause you're a girl, what can you do?" That pissed me off. My guy friends who know me. Know that I am a good player. I may not be as good as them. But I'm worth something.
I also like music. Greatly. I love rock music especially. I mean like I like Metal, Punk, Emo, Ska, Classic, Grunge. All types. What's wrong with it? I don't know. But some people just can't appreciate things.
Another point to be made. Some people find it a little odd I enjoy video games so much. Most don't mind.
But still. I love them. And some claim It isn't lady-like. I think....Fuck you.
Oh. Did I mention? I happen to have...a wide vocabulary....meaning I can curse. I try at times to change my words so that I do not curse. But at times, one cannot help themselves.
So yeah. I'm in this community. Because being lady-like...well, It's old.

Just another new girl
Hey there, just joined! I have to say... I love this community, it's just the thing I've been looking for!
My reasons for being here:
-I've been told I'm too sarcastic for my own good
-Few are the times in my life when I have donned make up, all but one of those times was for Theatrical purposes... the other time was just me being nice to my cousin, who was sitting for her beautician's exam and needed a model (she didn't have any younger sisters or other female cousins at her disposal). I might be one day convinced to wear heavy black make-up a la The Crow, because I love the style, and, let's face it, it's not really graceful feminine make-up anyway
-I am known to wear skirts on occasion, but it's not because it's the lady-like thing to do, but because they're cool. Cool as in temperature, not flimsy fashion statement. Rather a long skirt than shorts in summer...
-I'm going to grow up to be the professional of the family, especially if I remain with my currentboyfriend partner in crime, who has admitted to not having a problem with the idea of him staying home whilst I worked outside
-Even as a child I was... unfeminine, I shunned any dolls given to me (they always ended up getting beaten up by my brother's Ninja Turtles... which I still prefer)
-My mother has taken to following me with a hairbrush, waiting for any opportunity to clean up my mess
-I'm extremely condescending when it comes to matters of intellect, it takes so much restraint for me to refrain from pointing out errors which, to me, seem glaring. Unfortunately I ususally have to as they're made by the more incompetant of my teachers.
-I wouldn't say I swear like a sailor, but, hey, I don't believe that a word, in no particular context, can be offensive.
-As a child I was fascinated by the strangest things; the black death, bloody revolutions, jack the ripper, occultism... I remember being entranced by all those things when I was around 8 or 9, it seems quite macabre, but I love it
-A lot of girls I know and love like girlie movies and tv shows. Please, tell me I'm not the only one who wants to slowly strangle the entire cast of Sex and the City? I, myself, prefer a good horror or action movie, perhaps some lovely, lovely Quentin Tarantino
-I've been told I shouldn't fence because it's a man's sport *glares at aunt*. It's NOT! It's a fabulous sport and swords are fun to play with
Ugh... should I stop there? Is this relevent? Wow.
Well, anyway, I'm Max, which I forgot to mention before, because I'm feeling sick and therefore somewhat slow tonight.
EDIT: And I meant to say this before *facepalm*, I was reading through some of the back entries and I saw someone calling herself a prude... I just want to add: ME TOO!

In recent years there has undoubtedly been an increase in the number of women in action movies, particularly in mainstream cinema. Whereas once there was only Alien, Terminator and, erm, Tank Girl, we now have Charlies Angels, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Matrix, Tomb Raider, Kill Bill and loads more. Some
people see this as a sign that women are gaining more equality, others think that it has a lot to do with economics and marketing. In your opinion, what is the reason for this increase?
3.What about the feminist implications of this?
Do you feel that there's anything particularly feminist about women kicking butt on the big screen? How do you feel about these films in general (i.e. films with female action heroines)? How should we, as feminists, treat them?
4.Favourite female action heroine?
Who is your favourite female action heroine and why? Does she embody any characteristics which are particularly feminist? Is she a good role model?
5.Do you think seeing images of violent women can do anything to counteract violence against women?

I've been told I'm supposed to:
Get married, have a kid, and give up my life to stay home.
Wear pretty clothes and make-up.
Spend all my free time worrying about my looks and boys.
Watch chick-flicks only and soap opera's on tv.
Avoid college and become a homemaker.
Love the color pink.
Enjoy boybands, R&B, or supposed "punk" boybands.
Play with barbie dolls.
I shouldn't:
Have my own opinion.
I shouldn't write.
Play video games.
Watch anime.
Get tattoos.
Play guitar.

It REALLY annoys me when people say to me....

Does it make me any less of a lady to listen to Iron Maiden then? Why? Is Maiden considered "bloke's music"?

The actual GSG website needs a serious update and we're meeting about that this weekend. I'll be doing a snappy redesign and will let you all know when it's done. We have upcoming shows in both Portland and Seattle, and tentative plans for others in NYC and San Francisco.
