Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission

The Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission seeks to preserve historic landmarks and districts within the Town of North Hempstead, and protect, enhance, promote, and perpetuate our architectural, cultural, and landscaped heritage which are of particular historic or aesthetic value.

We seek to stabilize and improve the property values of our historic landmarks and historic districts and foster
civic pride in those elements of the Town's past.

We recognize and ensure the preservation of the Town's past, which represents the many and varied
architectural, artistic, technological, cultural and/or historic achievements of our residents and ancestors.

We promote the preservation of historic landmarks and historic districts as a means of providing appreciation
and unique educational benefits by perpetuating the physical evidence of the Town 's past.

We ensure that all maintenance or alterations to landmarks and historic district properties align with the Code relevant Town departments, and are guided by the Secretary of the Interior's Standards of Rehabilitation, The National Register of Historic Places, and the New York State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).

The Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission recently hosted "Meet & Greets" for homeowners and/or residents of the Port Washington and Roslyn Heights Historic Districts where residents discovered how living in a historic district can add value to their homes and received expert answers on exterior changes, resources, and local landmarks.
