I hope you all are enjoying a lovely International Workers' Day! I am certainly happy to have a holiday (and, more seriously, the fact that I am entitled to work only an eight-hour day and no more than that)
I met a newbie to HG/SS ship who wanted reading recommendations. I responded in an improvised way and I'm not very satified with my answer. I just sprinckle some sites and authors, and I think I omited a lot.
That kept me thinking: if we mark Textualsphinx's fic Letter from Exile one Merciful Morning * as a starting point to our fandom, it means we celebrate 16 years of our ship last December. Since then, lots of groups, communities, archives has come and go, leaving its mark. So, if we were to make a "syllabus"-metaphorically speaking- to introduce someone to our ship, what will be the main topics we should cover? Who would be its representative artists and authors, the pivotal works, the milestones? Which question should be answer to cover our ship in said syllabus?

Date: 2017-05-01 06:33 pm (UTC)I'd say that it's useful to split the ship up into 'eras', like Harmony_Bite's REC LISTS. Since post-DH fic is a very different beast from post-OotP.
Unfortunately, Harmony's lists stop at 2009, which misses out a lot of good fic. (Like that of Cathedral Carver, Lena1987, MyWitch, ThisIsZircon, etc.).
In terms of (older) authors I'd recommend (since they seem to get forgotten about nowadays, with most fic now over on AO3, rather than Ashwinder and TPP), I'd go with:

I'm a bit hesitant to list favourite authors since I'm likely to forget someone I really like. So instead have a few favourite stories from each "period." I actually didn't find fandom until after HBP was published, so I'm more familiar with stories written after 2006
