See, that’s what the app is perfect for.

Sounds perfect Wahhhh, I don’t wanna

To my Dead Dad

To the man that stepped foot into this world and left behind his mark.

To the man who loved more than he could show, with an outstretched hand and the shirt off his back. To his hospitality, who made every person a friend, despite teaching his children about “Stranger Danger”. To his love that shone so bright it died out quick.

You will always be seen in the halls of the hospital floors you walked, in the acres that you nurtured for nearly ten years of your life. You’ll always be in the divots of the cushion in the weathered lawnmower, the flashing headlights of the quads, the autumn breeze of hunting season, the hat you washed in the pool and the skulls across your shirts.

We’ll see you in every gorilla that beats its chest with power, in the mighty roar of a sovereign lion. We’ll remember you in every movie you adored, every song we should have guessed, every pillow pressed against our cheek, every art piece left unfinished, and in the breath of every lyric you had sung.

The lone swing will sway to your fleeting presence. The hawks had watched until you returned home. Your charm is preserved in your youth of sprouting grey hairs and the start of wrinkles etched across your skin.

To a son, a father, a brother, an uncle. To a friend, a lover, a man who gave as much as he had been able. To all the little things that made up who you were. We love you, Nicholas John the third. Your mark has been left with us.

As of now, I'm attempting to flesh-out and characterize each Brave Brigade member for a future fic.

I'll post what I have shortly, but I'm curious to know all your guy's thoughts and theories.

I have a full list of names and abilities for each, along with partial characterizations for a time travel fic that I was writing a while back, I'm taking this as an opportunity to share (the ages are inaccurate, I messed up the calculations but I won't fix them for this post)

Brave Brigade:

Mecha Man Astral (Robbie) - Powerless - 32 - Robert but a hardass and more enthused with life (very autistic, no he does not know)

Vitalia (Althea) - Healing - 31 - Tired, but usually hopeful, has not figured out that her abilities take time off the ends of peoples lives in exchange for the wounds to be healed yet

Trackstar (Chase) - Time Dialation - 20 - It's just younger Chase

Dragonfly (Cecilia) - Dragonfly wings and abilities -  37 - Enthusiastic about everything

Airheart (Amelia) - Wind powers - 29 - Sarcastic but nice

Aurum (Vaako) - Ferrokinesis - 42 - Phenominaman but human (Austistic as fuck and does not mask very often if ever, Airheart and Dragonfly can and will fight someone over an insult to him)

Armaman (Aaron) - Weapon and Armor Summoning - 26 - Enjoys fighting, a bit snappy at times

Shroud (Elliot) - Prediction (Augmented) - 33 - Nicer Elliot

Ask me about them and I will tell you things as I come up with them to answer the question

nocturnaloldsoul

Ooooh!! First off, LOVE the names you’ve given them.

1) Vitalia’s powers shortening the life-span of a person as she’s healing them is SO creative. Most of the drawbacks from powers (that we’ve seen in the Dispatch universe) have a negative side-effect to the user. But the idea that Vitalia’s power actively harms and heals is VERY NEAT!

2) For Cecilla, what type of dragonfly abilities will she have?

3) Is Vaako the one that looks more like a robot, or is he the one that has the large weapon? Either way, I’d love to hear more about him!!

4) If this is about the guy with the big weapon, I thought about doing something similar with weapon summoning, but wasn’t too sure. I’m glad to see your developing it within the Brave Brigade!

BTW, which fic did you write? I’ve read a lot of time travel ones on A03, and I’d love to go back over your work to see your ideas!

Dude! Hold on! I have somewhere to be right now, but I will be back with my links and theories of stuff I've compiled together! I am so excited to talk to someone about this!!!

emmasmoke8

About Vitalia - just my crack theories about her being Mandy’s mom, Elliot’s lover, and Golem’s creator. I should also make a post about how I think her powers work

About Other Lady - I doubt I have anything about her right, but I will be counting points for myself if she has a mobility power or a pun for a name or something like that

I’ve got theories about the others, too, if I may be so bold to share

nocturnaloldsoul

NO WAY!! I've been following your fics of Dispatch (Nobody's Soldier has REALLY helped me understand Coop, AND you've inspired a fic I'm writing. AND A thousand fingerprints on the surface of who I am- LOVE LOVE LOVE it so much - you're like my fav fic author!! Oh my GOD! This is an honor!!!

Okay, okay. Maybe too much fangirling but...wow. Thanks for your help, really, this is so amazing!

Vitalia- as far as my theories go, I don't have much on her yet. If it's okay, I can get back to you with some of my crack theories/theories and so forth?

With YOUR ideas, I honestly thought Elliot and Mandy would have a connection in Canon, so the idea that he and Vitalia are her birth parents is, like, such a cool theory that could lend to a greater arching storyline later on. Like Shroud admires Blonde Blazer for her heroics, but later finds out that she's actually his daughter? I can imagine he'd be proud- she's everything he thought Robbie should have been but wasn't (at least in Elliot's eyes). But I can imagine (if spared in the gameplay) could lend to a whole unraveling and character analysis of both Shroud and Mandy.

I'm pretty sure Vitalia was one of the few that wanted Elliot to join the Brigade anyways, so I could see a possible romance within that.

But GOLEM, my boy!! In my mind, I thought his creator had made him (and others) as a means of nefarious acts. Like minions that later grew to be much more than they could handle, so she released them. HOWEVER, I love the more wholesome approach, being Vitalia creating Golem and raising him some before letting him "fly the coop" so to speak.

Personally, I already had a head canon that Vitalia was considered parental/motherly to the younger members of the Brigade (Chase, mainly) But I can talk about that a little later- again if that's okay

OTHER LADY: Dude...I didn't even know where to start with her. I've been researching powers and studying her design to figure out what type of hero she would be.

At first, I thought elemental, so like wind related powers because her design has that incorporated in the scarf. That's still kind of a backburner idea.

Then I was thinking, you know, she's pointing at her head- so maybe it's a more mental power. Doesn't really line up with her suit though, since there really isn't any comparing elements (unless we consider it's somewhat formality), but even then I scratched that idea.

I was talking to (low and behold) my mom about her last night, and it's a freaky coincidence that she literally did mention Amelia Earheart (costume design reflects as much) and her powers being flying centered. I worried that would be too on the nose, considering Robbie and the small fairy-like lady already had that power, but that doesn't necessarily make it a bad thing. Z-Team has a lot of flight adjacent heroes on their roster (Coupe, Sonar, Flambae, Phenomaman- if you add him) not considering Blonde Blazer, or later, StarBlazer.

Your concept is much cooler than whatever sludge I could think up, so I just have to applaud you. I LOVE Wendy Wright (ha- typical superhero name AND Robbie isn't the only one with ridiculous repetition lol)

Speaking of the fairy lady, (so me responding isn't just me quoting everything you said back to you lol), I did come up with the bare bone basics of her- for now.

Here's a little of what I have.

Vanessa "Nessa" Mora:

At least, that's the name I considered for her. It was previously Morales, but I thought that would be a bit too similar to Miles Morales, and Mora did about the same thing as what I had been going for.

Anyways. I chose Mora because of its relation to "Mulberry" and "Death". Odd, I know.

What I was going for was that a Mulberry tree represents "transformation" and a "connection", while a Mulberry bush is more commonly known via the "Pop goes the weasel" children's song. It relates to youth and a childish fantasy, which corresponds to her fairy/butterfly like design.

"Death" which would fall under a Slavic meaning of Mora, and if you know anything about butterflies, you know that they don't live long.

If you haven't seen it already, I'm gonna torture you with THIS POST https://www.tumblr.com/falling-star-cygnus/807152853510750208/z-team-make-a-wish-part-two-prism-waterboy?source=share by Falling_Star_Cygnus. It's basically what inspired me to figure out Nessa.

The name Vanessa comes from the name of the Painted Lady butterfly. My theory is that, before joining the Brave Brigade, she had a more colorful, loud design like the Painted Lady- that, once joining the team, was rebranded for a more diluted color, cohesive purposes. She was then considered the "Azure Veloz", based off of the Spring Azure butterfly color-scheme wise. Veloz roughly translating to Swift, making her the Swift Blue.

(Fun fact, Johnathan Swift actually came up with the name "Vanessa"! I didn't even know that, and I'm literally actively learning about this man LOL)

Sorry for the long post. Thanks again, and I'd love to hear more about your theories and ideas!

I did not forget about this. I just kept doing other stuff, which admittedly isn’t better but on the bright side, I got to see some other people’s takes and read their stories, so really, this is an absolute win

Anyway, back to your reblog:

Oh, whoa. I’m not good with having people like me, sorry. Like, I conceptually know my works have fans, but to think I’m in the running to be someone’s favorite? That my work could help shape how you view a character? That’s the unfathomable right there. But let me not get lost in the sauce, we’re here to speculate!!

The storyline would go crazy because Shroud is prideful, self-serving, and technological. He derives strength from enhancing/manipulating others or augmenting himself. We don’t know much about Vitalia’s personality, but her appearance gives her power a mystical edge (I’ve also written her power as having to do with the breath and soul, so yeah, opposite of tech). She’s a healer, we know that, and it seems like she heals anyone regardless of status or how they got their wound

And Mandy just isn’t a hero like either of them. She has the aesthetics and moral compass of her mother, but she’s a brawler. Destructive. She does things alone, rarely relying on others

If she knows/suspects her heritage, she likely wanted to distance herself from both of them

As for Golem, I’ve seen it more as Vitalia accidentally creating him. Either she’s too young to raise him, or she thinks her identity as both a healer and hero would make him a target. Maybe she gave him to someone she thought she could trust, and they used Golem as a tool. When he was caught, maybe she pulled some strings to get him into the Phoenix Program

The other lady—Wendy, as I called her—is really just a victim of me wanting superhero characters to have strange superpowers. I don’t want normal; I want weird!

So, yeah, I zero’d in on her having a mobility power. I knew it couldn’t be speed, so maybe flying. But to stick with the plane motif, let’s give her something to fly with. Now that I’m thinking about it, she’s probably more Green Goblin in how she flies lmao

Now, Nessa!! Admittedly, my only “idea” for her is that I assumed she was to BB as Wasp is to the Avengers (comics, I mean). Cause I do think BB is meant to mirror both Avengers and the Justice League, so we should definitely draw inspiration from there where we can

Is Azure Veloz the hero name you’ve given her?

Other than that, I understand what you’re going for. I do like the idea that she was a hero before joining in the Brigade. That does make me wonder who started it and who joined when (Chase likely joined last)

What do you think her powers are? We know she can fly, and she’s small. Is she always small, or does she have size manipulation? Is her strength the same in this size or proportionally scaled up or down (like how Spider-Man has the proportional strength of a spider)?

Any ideas cooking for the other Brigade members? I’ve been scheming a few ideas myself haha

nocturnaloldsoul

Sorry for the late reply- I was trying to get an art concept drawn for the characters, but that’s becoming increasingly more clear that it’s gonna be a while (I’m not an artist, lol)

Okay, to be entirely fair, the contrast between Elliot and Vitalia has me in a chokehold, whether they be romantic or just friends. Because man…the idea that Elliot was so obsessed with technology to enhance (not cure, per se), compared to Vitalia as a natural healer is just such an interesting concept.

I wonder, then, if Vitalia’s power was something that completely cured others (we know she healed, but in the event of a terminal disease, would her powers be able to compensate for a true form of a cure, or would it always linger despite her attempts?)

Either way, it still lends to the comparison of both of them healing in ways that never really take away the full lasting effects of something incurable

OR

as opposed, one that only enhances strengths and covers diseases/weaknesses, while the other fully heals and cures the problem.

NESSA:

I thought about Wasp too! But I didn’t want to make her an exact copy of the character via powers even though their design is VERY similar.

Mainly, since butterflies don’t have a great deal of strength, I figure her stats for combat would be a 1 or 2, even with any meta-human strength. She would make up for it with high mobility and endurance/vigor since certain butterflies can endure harsh climates.

(The painted lady in particular, which is one of the butterflies I’ve based Nessa off of, is known to seek shelter for protection and enter states of dormant hibernation to keep energy until warmer months)

She’d be average in other stats like Charisma and Intellect, since other teammates make up for that.

I figure she’s lived so long because 1) she’s learned how to conserve her energy through times of dormant/comatose states, and 2) she’s known Vitalia for a long while- it’s one of the reasons she joined the Brave Brigade to begin with- and Vitalia has been healing her ever since.

She likely doesn’t engage much in fighting as she does recon and staking out missions. I theorize she does have gadgets on her that make up for her lack of strength, and Elliot had promised her significant improvements to give her more strength (that Robbie likely disapproves, considering none of the other members actually get any tech)

AND Yes! That is the name I have given her (for now). If you have a different idea/concept, I’d love to know!!!

——-

For WENDY I honestly don’t have much for her, haha. I really really like how you’ve developed her though.

In any of my concepts, I take it she’s on the younger side, a bit older than Chase. Her, Nessa, and Chase (being the younger ones of the group and the ones with high mobility) likely train the most together, and joke around about how fast one another is (Chase wins, obviously)

I don’t know yet if Elliot’s upgrades for her would be focused on her flight as a means to enhance what she’s already good at, or if he plans to “fix” what she is lacking.

DIRK:

I don’t have much developed on him, but he is the one I’m currently drawing (lol).

Anyways, I named him “Samuel” an ode to Samuel L. Jackson– Mainly called “Sammy”, with a face claim of “Harold Perrineau”- specifically as Mark Hammond from Z-Nation (with different hair and a more y-shaped scar)

Sammy is part Scottish, as per the name of “Dirk”. He comes from a long line of a Highland Clan Warriors (haven’t given them a name yet tho) since the medieval century, each given a name under the weapon bestowed to them.

Obviously, Dirk does not have a dirk in-game- he carries something more akin to a Scythe, it seems. Which usually correlates to the Grim Reaper, though there’s isn’t much in his design to allude to this.

Even so, going off the very little we know, let’s just say his powers are in relation or similarity to the Grim Reaper, hence the weapon. In that case, we can go with something like “Elemental Disintegration and Fusion”, I.E. a “life and death contrast” as the seems to be a running (headcanon) theme with Vitalia and Nessa.

(I was going to go with a power more weapons-based, but I couldn’t really find anything that I liked. If you have any ideas that are better, please please let me know!)

Along with the theme of rebranding heroes once they joined the Brave Brigade, I imagine the media/PR for the BB tried to get him to dawn a name like “Reaper” or something adjacent/ more creative to it, but for the sake of family lineage, he doesn’t consider changing his hero name.

To me, I’m drawing Dirk/Sammy as more of a sophisticated guy. In my mind, after disbanding, he’s the only one to retire from the life of heroism and devote time to his family and community.

SYNTH:

I’ve talked about them once (I think?) in a fic. Their name is based off of “synthesizer”, which of course is based off of the instrument. They control frequencies and have the ability to mimic sound/soundwaves, which comes in handy for gather intel or pretending to be someone else. “Soundscaping” basically.

I had a theory that they were a creation of Robbie and Elliot’s, but decided against it for no other particular reason than wanting a more unique storyline (and that they aren’t mentioned as a creation of either one, which I think would be important to the storyline in-game anyways)

There are a couple characters, like Equilibrium, that seem to be more bionic in nature. According to the wiki, Equilibrium is “entity of indeterminant species”, so not necessarily AI.

Synth also doesn’t appear to be in a similar design to them, unless, of course, Synth is like an “earlier model” to Equilibrium’s modern style.

All that said, idk if I want them to be a type of alien species or sentient AI, but I did want to develop their personality beyond being neutral.

Anyways, currently I’m considering that Vitalia and Synth were the “start” of the Brave Brigade, since in-game they say Astral “teamed up” with the BB- not “formed”.

Maybe they were already training a young Track-Star, who was underage (by a year or two) to operate as a hero, but was currently considered a trainee. Nessa was on the fence, still okay doing her own thing, and the others (Dirk, Wendy, and Astral) hadn’t joined yet.

They and Vitalia were co-leaders, basically, until Astral joined and the media designated him as the Brave Brigade’s leader. Synth and Vitalia lost most of the command after that, which Synth was rightfully upset over.

I figure Synth tries to co-leader, or take charge, every once in a while, which creates a bit of a tedious nature in group dynamics, but they never attempt to undermine Robbie’s ruling, unless, you know, it actually needs modification.

I take it they have high intellect and combat, moderate mobility, low vigor and charisma.

—–

All that to say, if the Z-Team is based on the nature of unpredictability, then the Brave Brigade would be the predictable.

Vitalia and Nessa resemble life and death, but generally predictable stages of development.

Dirk represents the transformation through life and death, but achieving the same result in the end.

Synth is the representation of all man in “moral” stance- not exactly neutral, but on a scale of black and white, doesn’t waver.

Robbie is the legacy of his father’s creation, more Mecha-Man than Robert Robertson the second, walking the steps of a dead man.

Elliot, obviously, strives towards predictability through advancements and reliance on understanding of human nature.

The only two I have trouble actually fitting in that mold is Chase and Wendy, so maybe not the best comparison, but I like the idea nonetheless.
