welcome to shitpost street. you missed shitpost central, go back and turn right.
my flight rising blog is @harvest-hardshell

I think we need to kill the sentiment that people lose their right to personhood once they do something bad enough

I don't know who needs to hear this but you need to stop dehumanising people even if those people are "abusers" or "creeps" because you need to understand that you are not immune to doing something equally as bad

Abusers and creeps are not some species of especially heinous animal or alien or monster wearing the face of a human. They're people. And you NEED to drill it into your head that they are people because you NEED to remember that people are capable of doingn heinous shit. And you are a person. And your loved ones are people.

By emotionally classifying people who have done heinous things as subhuman filth incapable of thinking and feeling and acting just like you and me, and by using that emotional dehumanization as a reason to deny those people any compassion or support on a systemic level, you risk becoming blind to abuse/violence perpetrated by someone close to you or even yourself. Because if "abusers don't deserve rights", then you won't ever want to admit or accept that you or a loved one is perpetrating abuse, and that makes stopping the abuse or preventing further abuse much harder. This is how you end up excuaing abusive behaviour on the grounds that, since you don't see someone as a disgusting subhuman pile of garbage therefore they can't possibly be An Abuser, Trademark

And here'a the even harder pill to swallow: since the world isn't split into "abusers" and "good people", in the same way you or someone you love can inflict abuse/violence on others, the people who HAVE inflicted abuse/violence on others can, in fact, change and become better people

There is no bottomless chasm of moral uncleanliness that someone can run off and fall into and get stuck in forever. People can do better. Yes, even those people. You HAVE to accept this. Otherwise not only is there no motivation for anyone to try and do better (which is when people become stuck in a cycle of violence and abuse they don't want to escape), but your idea of a perfect justice system doesn't look any different from Literal Christian Hell. And I HOPE you understand that Literal Christian Hell is, to put it very lightly, not a good justice system.

Unchecked and fear-driven dehumanization is the brick foundation for fascism.

I do love a good archaic minced oath. "Zounds" ("God's wounds") is of course a classic, but I've always had a soft spot for "blazes" ("hell"). "What in blazes" simply has a ring to it that "what the hell" lacks.

Game where the ancient hero is awakened from the deathless sleep of centuries in the hour of their people's greatest need, only to find that civilisation is thriving and there are no obvious threats on the horizon; the game then becomes a fish-out-of-water detective sim as they try to figure out what woke them up, and also solve other, smaller mysteries along the way.

And then it turns out the threat is economic/political with the rise of fascism in corporate power. And that all the attack moves you learn in the tutorial can be used in debate, but you have to hold the “talk/interact” button in order to avoid doing those as physical violence. Whenever you’re physically holding that button down a meter at the bottom of the screen starts to drain and when it’s fully empty, you are no longer are able to hold back. It doesn’t drain very fast, and refills pretty quickly, but it’s to prevent people from taping that button down.

You’re literally always holding back.

The midjourney stuff just reminds of when we were trying to find a new platform to host the ao3 donation form, and companies kept trying to tell me about all their "ai" features that would track donor engagement, and figure out the optimal pattern to email individual donors asking for follow up donations, and all the ways they suggest we manipulate people into staying on our websites. It was a great way to filter out who either wasn't listening to us when we described our ethics and donor base, or just didn't believe us.

Now granted ao3 is a unique case based on a) the amount of page views we get in any given time period and b) the fact that most donors absolutely do Not want to be identified as such anywhere, (the default "list of recent donors" module got nuked Immediately) but it surprised me some that the concept of "donors who value their privacy and would be furious at even the whiff of AI" is unique. Some of us really are just existing in different worlds.

The last part was kind of insane, honestly. When we started changing platforms for the donor database, I kept telling them that yes I was aware we already had an account for the volunteer database, and no that could not be connected to the donor database. And they said yes fine sure and then connected them anyway. And I called them back and said, excuse me, I'm confused, I can see both databases. And they said, well, yeah, but it's only you, someone has to be able to see both databases to give other users access. The other users can't see both. And I said, no, we have been asking for a completely separate database. I should not be able to see both. And they said, you are one organization, one organization can't have two databases. And I said, last year someone used our volunteer email list to commit approximately one thousand felonies. Please feel free to imagine how much worse it could have been had they had a way to use volunteers' email addresses to get their legal names. We do not want this to be something anyone can do no matter how much we trust them. Let me describe those felonies to you in more detail. And they emailed me two hours later and said, you can have two separate databases.

This post feels like watching an iceberg go by in clear water. The amount of stuff going on beneath the surface of AO3 just astonishes.

“chocolate guy” is currently shilling for harry potter so i better not see yall post his shit anymore. anyone who engages with that shit especially for money is scorched earth as far as i’m concerned.

Came right up when I searched it, unfortunately

because of the new tv show. and it’s only going to get worse as we get closer to the show’s release. take notice of it — who’s advertising, who’s talking about it, who’s encouraging you to watch it. it’s going to keep happening. there’s going to be more chocolate guys, more nicholas hoults, more kiera knightleys.

take no shit. give rowling an inch and she’ll take a mile. i don’t care how much you like or don’t like someone — if you see them interacting with harry potter positively in ANY way, drop them. unfollow, block, pretend they don’t exist. scorched fucking earth.

and most importantly, be loud about your support for transfems. be transfeminists. be mean about it. fight with people about it. block liberally. download shinigami eyes. read transfeminist theory. provide material and monetary support for dolls who need it, especially the trans women of color in your communities. show them that they’re loved. don’t look away.

it's really painfully obvious that the most extreme thing some people can imagine a parent doing to a child is hitting them once out of uniquely monumental anger and feeling bad about it afterwards. I'm sorry but you have to understand that parents are, actively, at a larger scale than literally anyone else (chapter 3, perpetrator relationship): raping their kids for years on end (my childhood); beating them to the point they regularly fear for their lives (my friend's childhood); torturing them to death (candace newmaker); locking them up without any human contact, depriving them of every single human necessity (genie). There are countless stories like this, of exploitation and abuse in a thousand awful flavors, countless examples of all of these things, and you have to understand that these are not exceptions to the healthy, functional family; these abuses are all made possible, even probable (e.g. spanking, forced dressing/undressing, unwanted sexual comments about the body, unwanted invasion or denial of privacy) by the ownership and power parents are given over their children. You don't need exceptional wealth and power to wreak the worst kinds of violence on a child. All you need are the natural rights given for parenting one.

every single fucking study shows that parents are the biggest abusers of their own children in every fucking category but no one cares!!!!! we can't change anything about the world, we just need to whack-a-mole punish the mentally-predisposed-exceptional-degeneretes the bourgeois state manage to catch and prosecute, and oh of course give more fucking power to parents so they can Keep Kids Safe And Isolated Fanily Home Is Perfect Place To Put Child Safe Environment Good Size, but it's never going to fucking stop until something fundamentally changes!!!!!!!!! Children need political power, they need economic support, they need independence and they need rights. The right to say no to what adults want from you, the right to leave your parents, the right to be provided with food and a home.

I was looking forward to doing a video on an Irish language game that's just been announced but it's used Generative AI for pretty much every art asset.

Like not only does it make the art style wildly inconsistent, but I don't know how you can champion learning a language, and then default to AI generated art.

Really hope the dev can work with an artist to turn it around.

never thought this day would come but i’m currently having a customer service experience so bad right now that i’m defecting from the employee regiment and joining the customers in their next battle. i don’t know who i am anymore.

experience that makes me research local customer service supervisors for a global corporation and tag them in a LinkedIn post, to fall upon their mercy.

long story short i have worked for a call center in customer service before and i knew something was not working out. i've had to call about this issue 5 times in 4 weeks because it's still not resolved, and each time the conversation has ended i've asked for an email confirmation of our conversation and a ticket number so i can call back and reference it with a new representative.

well every time i've called, the new representative has been like "i'm so sorry, but there's no ticket by that number. i have no record of you ever calling about this. i'll start a ticket for you."

finally, the fifth time i nearly burst into tears of frustration and i said "i don't want you to start a ticket for me, because it will be the sixth ticket created for this same issue. every week, one of your colleagues tells me they'll create a a new ticket for me, and then nothing happens."

they said, "i'm sorry but i have no record of those tickets existing." and i was like i KNOW. but they doooooo what is happening.

finally i got transferred to a supervisor's supervisor.

if you've ever worked in online customer service, you know that when a customer calls with a problem, you create a "ticket" that puts that issue into the system. if you can't resolve it, it goes into a ticket queue, where other people with the ability to resolve it select it, put it into their personal working queue, and resolve it.

well after 30 minutes of searching, this supervisor tells me, dumbfounded, that she's discovered a completely unique queue she's never seen before, where my tickets have been going somehow. a pocket universe queue that no one has access to or can edit or select from, not even her. she has no idea what's happening. she's like "yes, here are all your tickets, and no one can open them or comment on them or resolve them.....this is crazy......" and it's JUST my tickets in there. no one else's. of tens of thousands of customers.

all professionalism fell by the wayside. i told her i've worked with those queues before and also found that totally wild. she was like "what the hell is going on...." and talked me through everything she was seeing and how gobsmacked she was. we were both like "this is one for the books truly"

tells me she's going to have to bring this up above herself because this is a really big error on like, a coding level, that she has no idea how to resolve. tells me she will personally call me back tomorrow to update me.

four days pass with no word.

i call customer service again. random agent. explain the entire situation, including that last bit.

agent says "i'm sorry but i have no record of those tickets existing. i'll have to start a ticket for you. rest assured, it will be resolved."

i said, "no it won't be. it never will be. because they're in the special queue."

clearly not believing me, they said, "i've heard nothing about that. i'll start a new ticket for you."

the replacement of websites with apps sounds so backwards when you actually describe it. like hmm you have to download an entire program onto your device each time you want access to a portal, where it takes up storage indefinitely. somebody should invent an app where you can "browse" any portal just by typing in its address... 🥴
