Friends Only

For a number of reasons, I've trimmed my friends list extensively and this journal is now Friends Only.

I will no longer friend people with blank journals and those whom I know nothing about, so please don't take it personally if I do not friend you back.

Most things that I post have conditions for reposting; I expect everyone to comply with those conditions. You're on my friends list because I trust you!

All comments will be screened.

Thank you!

Viggo Mortensen, Academy Award Nominee

First, more from Viggo:

From: Associated Press
Quote:

"It‘s kind of odd to finally win the lottery and there‘s nobody at the ticket booth," said first-time nominee Viggo Mortensen, who earned a best-actor slot for the crime tale "Eastern Promises."

From Perceval Press
Quote:

It would be noble and only fair if those corporate decision-makers in the entertainment industry who are spending considerable funds on their reasonably successful campaigns to put the Writers Guild in a bad light as party-poopers would spend that money on a fair contract and fair compensation to the writers, which we all know they will end up having to do eventually. It is the right thing to do. Lets hope decency wins out.

Here's what others had to say today about Viggo's nomination:

Naked fight club.
While many attribute Viggo Mortensen's successful Oscar bid for Eastern Promises to that very nude and very violent bathhouse scene, it isn't actually common for male nudity to be rewarded by the Academy. Alan Bates famously tussled in the nude in Women in Love (1969) but only received a BAFTA nomination. Oscar passed him by. Richard Gere and Ewan MacGregor, two famous actors who haven't been shy about disrobing have never been nominated, whether clothed or un... even when they appeared in Oscar-beloved pictures. This film year, dubbed by at least one snarky writer as "the year of the wang", didn't arouse Oscar either. Frank Langella (Starting out in the Evening) and Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) couldn't convert their buzz into a nomination now could they? Methinks Viggo, who turned down Academy membership quite recently, can thank his own actory skill (considerable), the accent (Oscar Bait) and, most importantly, the media friendly double dipping with director David Cronenberg (perhaps the Academy feel guilty about their treatment of A History of Violence?) for the nomination. Director/actor pairings are inherently cool, are they not?

I am super stoked Viggo Mortensen got the nod because it's a bit overdue and he's terrific in Eastern Promises.

What the? The big surprise here was Viggo Mortensen, who collected his first-ever nomination for the enjoyable crime drama “Eastern Promises.” He should have earned it for his earlier collaboration with David Cronenberg, on “A History of Violence”; I see this as an apology.

From: Radar Online.com
Quote:

If there were any justice, they'd give this to Viggo, who is the only one on this list who's never won and never been nominated. And he got naked and did a knife-fight scene. Ballsy!
From: Roger Ebert.com
Quote:
In the best actor category, no surprise that George Clooney, Daniel Day-Lewis and Johnny Depp were nominated. But the academy did itself proud by reaching out to Tommy Lee Jones ("In the Valley of Elah") and Viggo Mortensen ("Eastern Promises") for their powerful work.

And I was very happily surprised to see Viggo Mortensen earn a well-deserved nomination for EASTERN PROMISES, especially after he was snubbed a couple years ago for A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE.

And Viggo Mortensen got a deserved first Oscar nomination for David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises.

...(how nice, by the way, to see Tommy Lee Jones and Viggo Mortensen recognized for "In the Valley of Elah" and "Eastern Promises," respectively).

Dennis Hopper On Viggo Mortensen

Dennis Hopper on Viggo Mortensen

"Viggo is so minimal and so stoic. His performance in 'Eastern Promises' is one of the best I've seen all year. Viggo is such an inventive actor; he is wonderfully intuitive, and he has great improvisational skills. He does great preparation. I understand he watched Russian TV for hours. He just looks Russian in 'Eastern Promises.' There's one scene where Naomi Watts gets on the motorcycle. Viggo is standing by a post and not moving: 'Where'd you get that bike?' I was impressed with how minimal he was; I just bought that he was a Russian hitman. And I love the fight scene, and doing it nude is quite an achievement. You have no protection, no room for pads. You have no room for faking. Yes, I'm going to vote for Viggo."

Viggo Wins Best Actor, British Independent Film Awards

HE WON!!!

hollywoodreporter.com/

Quote:
Out of 'Control' comes five BIFA nods
LONDON -- Anton Corbijn's "Control" was the big winner at Wednesday night's British Independent Film Awards, walking off with best movie, director and a pair of actor awards.

Corbijn's black-and-white film based on the life and suicide of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis scooped a total of five awards, including the evening's big two: best British independent film and best director.

Corbijn's biopic exorcised the threat of "Eastern Promises," "And When Did You Last See Your Father," "Hallam Foe" and "Notes on a Scandal" to secure the evening's best picture nod.

And Corbijn beat Anand Tucker ("And When Did You"), Sarah Gavron ("Brick Lane"), David Cronenberg ("Eastern Promises") and David Mackenzie ("Hallam Foe") to the punch as best director.

The Dutch director also secured the Douglas Hickox Award for best debut director for his film.

The movie's Sam Riley earned the most promising newcomer nod for his turn as the enigmatic singer-songwriter who committed suicide at age 23, just as his band began breaking into the big time.

Best supporting actor went to Tony Kebbell for his hilarious, swaggering interpretation of Joy Division band manager Rob Gretton. Kebbell was nominated for a best newcomer BIFA in 2004 for his role in "Dead Man's Shoes."

Viggo Mortensen's physical part in Cronenberg's "Promises," which includes an infamous naked knife fight in a sauna, secured best actor honors, while Judi Dench's barnstorming turn as a jealous, lonely teacher who resorts to blackmail and threats to keep a friendship in "Notes on a Scandal" walked off with this year's best actress nod.
