The Aït Khebbache women preserve a distinctive hairstyle unique among the Aït Atta. The hair is henna-coated, with strands behind the ear braided. The remaining hair is divided into sections, and a tassel is attached to the lower section. Hair from beneath is braided with the tassel, while the upper layer is draped over it to partially conceal it and then braided in. The hair is smoothed over a pad before being braided underneath. The main braid is brought to the back and passed under a small vertical braid from the occiput, leaving the pad and part of the ear visible.

“Steer your way past the ruins of the altar and the mall
Steer your way through the fables of creation and the fall
Steer your way past the palaces that rise above the rot
Year by year, month by month, day by day
Thought by thought
They whisper still, the ancient stones
The blunted mountains weep
As he died to make men holy
Let us die to make things cheap
And say the mea culpa, which you probably forgot
Year by year, month by month, day by day
Thought by thought”
―Leonard Cohen, “Steer Your Way”, from the album “You Want It Darker”, 2016
