My Pick Is ‘Have Something to Put Furniture Against’


Since having very slight opinions on syndicated story comic strips isn’t bringing in the money I’m thinking of another tack. I spent hours this weekend coming up with a new personality test and while it’s not finished I think I’ve got something that will reveal important things about the person examined. Here’s what I have so far:

  1. I believe the person who invented the first wall was trying to:
    1. Keep something out.
    2. Keep something in.
    3. Put something on something.

That’s as far as I’ve got, because this ended up more work than I expected plus TCM was showing Watership Down so I was busy watching that to the end. Anyway please let me know if you spot any obvious methodological flaws in it.

Me Week: What Philosophers Give Me


My love is a professional philosopher. This has encouraged me to pay more attention to philosophers. It’s a group of people I mostly know because a lot of philosophers were also mathematicians. For a long stretch there they were also lawyers and priests, but that’s just what you did if it was the middle ages and you didn’t want to be a serf, a boatman, or a miller.

Back in September 2013, we got to talking about Pythagoras, who’s renowned for being a cult leader that might have done something in mathematics or philosophy or both. It’s hard to say. But in Pythagoras and the Golden Middle-Ish I was enchanted by something I hadn’t heard about Pythagoras before. Yes, it’s got Olympics content, because of course, Pythagoras. You would.

For the folks who liked my last head-sup over to the mathematics blog, because I talked about comic strips with mathematical themes, I have another roundup of some of the comic strips which, in the last ten days, also found reasons to try telling jokes about mathematics. It won’t be on the quiz, but this will be.
