"In the late 80’s Diana became interested in the Germanic heathen tradition, which has become her major focus. In 1994 she was confirmed as an Elder in the Troth. She served on its Board of Directors from 1996-2005, and served as Steerswoman (president) between 1999-2002. Since 1997 she has edited the Troth’s journal, IDUNNA. A major interest has been the recovery of the northern magical traditions, including rune magic and oracular seidh. In addition to establishing a group which performs seidh in the Bay Area, she has conducted seidh training workshops all over the U.S. and in Europe. On the local level, she runs an open heathen kindred, Hrafnar, and teaches classes in runelore, trance-work, and Germanic magic. As a representative of the heathen tradition, Diana is also involved in the United Religious Initiative, an international interfaith organization." Whatever those two were going on about, and I don't particularly care about their personal grudges, they do touch on an interesting point.

How important would you say is ancestry?
Is blood or the land more important? Are neither important, just mindset?

And, of course, the related question: Can you follow the Celtic year in the southern hemisphere? On the equator?

Can someone of African descent connect to the Astaru? Can a Celt understand Christianity? Can a white boy practice Vodou?

In my opinion, mysticism should go above all this- direct communion with ultimate reality should look beyond things like religion and race.
I've learnt things from Kemeticism, Mithraism, Christianity, Sufism, Buddhism as well as the european pagan and occult paths- lots of Middle Eastern/Eastern religions that a white person shouldn't really have any connection to.

But I'm fascinated what others think.

My name is Caelum Rainieri, one of the co-authors of The Nahualli Animal Oracle. I'm also one of the maintainers of the Live Journal community Tribal Paganism. As you may have noticed, Robin Artisson has decided to use my book as a negative example of whatever point his lengthy essay is trying to make, even though he's never read it, and knows nothing about the Aztec civilization himself. Fortunately, we live in a society where free speech is protected, and he has every right to voice his own opinion about my work, or any published author, just as I do about his self-published books. And any of you who read it have the right to agree or disagree, or ask for more information.

Any one who is interested in Aztec Reconstructionism is invited to join my Yahoo group of the same name, or come to Tribal Paganism, where we talk about a wide variety of indigenous cultures and their impact on contemporary paganism, or, even better, purchase a copy of The Nahualli Animal Oracle, which was published by Bear & Co., in 2003. Some of you might be wondering why Robin Artisson would choose our book, when there are so many other books out there to pick from? That question has a simple answer. It's because I have pointed out that Robin Artisson has a habit of donning different spiritual "hats" for each book that he writes. When he wrote a book about Witchcraft, he labeled himself a traditional witch. When he wrote a book about Germanic heathenry, he labeled himself a Helrunar and Seidr-worker. When he wrote a book about Druidry, he labeled himself a Druid, and a Shaman. Since he publishes and promotes his own books, I guess he feels the need to prop up his qualifications as an author of that tradition by taking on the highest title offered by said tradition. Robin took great umbridge at my criticism and sent me a private e-mail demanding that I publicly apologize or he'd spread his essay criticizing our book across the Internet. I didn't apologize, and so you now see his essay published in your community.

Good Day All:

In ancient times, both the pre-historic and pre-modern, animistic tribal peoples in all parts of the world had the entire record of their primordial experience contained within traditions of living shamanic practice. The actual mystical specialists of these many peoples, called by whatever names, from Wicasa Wakans in the Dakotas to the Drui and Ban Drui of Ireland, were living repositories of the group spiritual experience. Without them, the tribe of whatever country had no spiritual past, present, or future; these mystics were the keepers of memory, the maintainers and representatives of the tribe-identity to the powers of the Otherworld or the unseen world, and the teachers of the future mystics would would maintain the inner life of the people.

Few people alive today can understand the crucial position of these people to largely pre-literate societies, where remembrance of story (and, in the case of men like Skalds and Bards, the inspired composition of songs, poems, and stories) represent the only conscious connection that most people have with the ancestral past and the spiritual power of the group in the present.

Needless to say, people who would uphold the mantle of mystic didn't get their title from reading a book or two; they spent years engaged in learning, spiritual and actual travel, and direct experience of the inner realities that they would one day act as mediators for.
