Leiji Matsumoto was a well-known creator of several anime and manga series.
Matsumoto was famous for his space operas such as Space Battleship Yamato and Galaxy Express 999. His style was characterized by mythological and often tragic storylines with strong moral themes, noble heroes, feminine heroines,and a love of strange worlds and melancholic atmosphere.

Based on the manga by Leiji Matsumoto, the television series is directed by Rintaro. The original manga was unfinished. Compared to the original manga, the anime has many original stories, characters and has a conclusive ending.

Starzinger was essentially a sci-fi space opera retelling of the 16th-century shenmo fantasy novel Journey to the West. The sci-fi twists were designed by Leiji Matsumoto based on the Terebi Magazine manga. The last nine episodes (Episodes 65-73) of the actual series was re-branded as "SF Saiyūki Starzinger II", though when shown outside Japan it was treated as one continuous series.

The film directed by Rintaro (Space Pirate Captain Harlock TV Series) premiered while the TV series and manga were still being released. The movie begins as a re-telling of the first few stories of the original manga/anime, but veers off and creates an entirely new story.
