Scribe's Note:This is from the online interactive novel, "Midnight People" over on Pan Historia. We are revising an earlier written story of a post-apocalyptic world that is run by warring factions of the Fae.

The phone broke the eerie silence within Fanny’s apartment, shattering what little sleep she had managed to get. She looked at the caller ID on my phone handset. It was Red’s home. Fanny answered the phone sleepily.

"So you're home again, "she said, not quite sure if any bitterness had slipped into her voice. No matter how Red felt, she resolved that she wasn’t going to debate the matter about her being in the family way. She was prepared for the worst but hoping for a better outcome than just him leaving over it.

"Yeah," his voice answered, “I had to check on Shep" After a long silence he continued, ,"I've been doing alot of thinking,"

Fanny didn’t know why she said what she did next, perhaps it was the sleep deprivation or the fact that she was already apprehensive about the situation. All she knew was that the words came in a flooding torrent. “I understand you not wanting to think about being a father,“ she said, “That's alright. But I will tell you that I intend to keep this child, whether you approve or not."

"I just don't understand why you told me you hadn't been with anyone since your husband died," Red said, his voice sounding almost defensive.

There it was. Now it was obvious to Fanny as to why Red had left. She was somewhat taken aback. What kind of woman did he think she was? she was silent for a very long moment.

"I told you that because it's the truth,” she said. “If you donnae believe me, you can have it checked out with your own physician, or you can call Dr. Grissom yourself, Red.” The Scots burr had crept into the last, but she didn’t care. She was uncertain what kind of women he was used to sleeping with, but if that sort of deception was the norm, then he'd best go find someone else to be giving it to him! Fanny was so sorely tempted to hang up the phone, not knowing why she even wanted to wait for him to respond. His words had stung her deeply. They clawed not only at her memory of Casey, but the deepest part of her. She realized that in the heat of passion between she and Red, she had failed to mention that she had lost Casey’s and her baby shortly after his being killed.

“It's none of my business who you slept with before me, Fanny,” his voice was tense, “ and it makes no difference to how I feel about you, but I was surprised, shocked even. You know perfectly well I can't be the father. I've had a fucking vasectomy!”

"Red, my husband as been dead for nearly two years, and I haven't seen anyone but you,” she said/ “Dr. Grissom told me when I saw him that things like this can and do sometimes happen," her mind was still sleepy, her emotions were still reeling that he gad actually thought the worst of her. In spite of all that, she justdid not have it within her to argue further.

“You're saying it couldn't be anyone else?” he asked.

“Aye,” she said softly, “that’s what I am saying.”

There was an awkward pause that seemed to last for an eternity. Finally he spoke. “ Then I guess I better check in with my own doctor.” There was another long pause. “I'm sorry, Fanny, I didn't mean to hurt you, but surely you understand how I could have been confused? I had an operation to prevent this very thing."

Fanny most definitely did not consider herself to be one of those women who got herself knocked up in order to get a husband. She’d managed to put away more than enough money of her own she would have no need to go after Red King or any man for support. But in listening to him now, even through the half closed curtain of needed slumber, she still found that her heart softening at his apology.

She let out a small laugh that sounded ‘off’ even to her own ears, "Well, this wasn't exactly in my cards either! You know that I started taking birth control soon after we started seeing more of each other. So, it must have been one of the first times that we....." her voice trailed off, realizing what it was that she had said. This child was mostly likely conceived the first night that Red and she had been together.

"I'm sorry, I overreacted, " Red said, "I should have just had this talk with you first. It's been a long time since I've felt this way about a woman, and the idea. --,” it was his turn to stumble uncomfortably, “you know, surely you know. Anyway, “ his voice was stronger now, resolved, as if he had made up his mind about what to do next, “ I'll be back tomorrow and we can talk more, that is if I'm still welcome. We'll figure it out. I'll try and see my doctor before I drive down."

"Of course you're still welcome," she smiled into the receiver, "you know, you are the first one that I've felt this way about, too. And here I thought that all that was over for me. I will be around, you can always get me by cell."

“Fanny.....”

“Yes, Red ?”

“It’s not over. “
