Caring is not an advantage, nor is sentiment. Regardless of advantages, however, some diseases recur and caring can not be cut out from the human chest, not while the heart beats on.
But it is an advantage to not feel that pain, to function and go onwards without a thought for that time-keeper in one’s chest. There are advantages to being the Ice Man. After all, there are only two four he cares for, and those two four are protected by their own ice. Sherlock is as safe as he can be made.

Additionally, there are advantages to be underestimated and forgettable, I'm sure.
