A little personal indulgence as I'm sure none of you care as much as I do... but there are stirrings in the Pearl Jam camp.

New album is announced as being released on May 2nd, and, strangely for an eighth studio album, will be a "self title".

One song, World Wide Suicide, is available for download free here - you have to "register" but it's something and nothing.

Also, the announced "World Tour Leg 1" predictably consists of dates in Canada and the US, and takes care of up 'til June.

Hello dudes!

I never post here and I think I should more. Just some random crap anyway...

The bands I'm going to see so far this year:

The Flaming Lips
Belle and Sebastian
The Editors

and hopefully Sigur Ros.

I know pretty much nothing about the above three other than the one or two songs I know and really like. Any advice?

What does everyone else have booked? Anything exciting!?

Gimme some of that Soul Power

So on the weekend I went ape-shit at Mojo Music in Sydney and bought more than I should including re-issues of Stooges & Funhouse (both rock!). I picked up a Rhino boxed set full of girl group sounds. Anyway listen to the set on repeat during a raining Sunday and it got me thinking about the sweet sounds of soul music.

This lead to me digging out Dusty Springfield Dusty in Memphis , which has been my Monday album. It got me thinking more about soul music and all of its forms. Blue-eye soul (Dusty & Co), Northern Soul, Chicago Soul, Motown, Southern Soul, etc, etc, etc...

I reckon I need to get some more soul power. So I ask this, do any of you have a recommendation for some more stuff to track down? Say 1 artist, 1 album & 1 song (pref. all different artists) that are worth tracking down?

I am not sure how many of fans of soul, so this may be a long shot!

Just bought the new Cardigans album, Super Extra Gravity.
Not sure yet, "Overload" is OK and "I Need Some Fine Wine And You, You Need To Be Nicer" is a really good song... and a couple of others are as good as the goodness of Long Gone Before Daylight and Gran Turismo... but overall I'm just not feeling that excited by it yet. Maybe it'll get better with a few playings.

Other thing that concerns me with this album is that there's no "Cardigans are:" bit with musicians names... just every track individually says "Music - Peter Svensson, Lyrics - Nina Persson & Nathan Larson"... I've thought before that it seems Peter Svensson is doing one of those Billy Corgan type things of thinking they're the only one with any worthwhile creativity in the band and so takes over... which would suck... also it makes me wonder if none of them were involved in this recording, then are they still even in the band... like, for touring purposes? A new album is always exciting as it suggests a tour might come soon... but with this one I'm just a bit unsettled.

Hmm OK, a bit further along now, and yes, "Good Morning Joan" and "And Then You Kissed Me II" are good.
Ahh, they have an "ask the band" link on their site, so I suppose I shall e-mail and ask just exactly what the sitch is with various bandmembers non-contributions.

Check out www.cardigans.com and their UK minisite, www.superextragravity.com

So, Blondies, do any of you have more experiences of your favourite bands being sort of railroaded by a particularly self indulgent member?

Have you ever known about a band, even known a few of their songs and said to yourself...

"I know I should like these guys" but have done nothing about it?

Mine is Pop Will Eat Itself. I know I would like them from what I have heard, but I have not acted on it.
I know everything

Music Genome Project

One of my lj friends posted about this, and damn its pretty cool.

Check this out. http://www.pandora.com/
Part of the Music Genome Project, type in the name of your favourite band and it will create and play a playlist for you of music that has similar attributes that you may enjoy. First 10 hours are free.

I am finding it rather awesome. Especially because I play music largely by mood, so new artists with the same mood without having to go plodding through heaps of shit? Brilliant.

I have no idea who they are, but East River Pipe and New Radiant Storm King are cool!
