There’s been a couple people in my comments being gross about anti censorship on ao3 and conflating “don’t like, don’t read” to actual pedophilia. Which is just a really extreme, immature, and awful thing to do, throwing around that term so casually.

It’s weird how pedophilia is the first thing these people think of when they hear a site contains triggering or nsfw content. These people know how serious crimes against children are, they know how much weight comes with that word, and because they know the seriousness of the word, they casually throw it around to shut down discussions by forcing people to sound like they are defending literal sex crimes against children. Possibly the worst crime a person could ever commit.

But triggering content does not exist in a vacuum. Depiction does not equal endorsement. You can never know the authors true intentions when writing about traumatic events. A fic could include grooming because that is something the author went through, and they are using a safe, controlled environment like fiction to work through their trauma in a way that cannot hurt themselves or anybody else.

I want to add that after saying all of this, I do not consume this kind of content because it does greatly disturb me and goes against my own morals. I also do not read smut or spice as I am a very vanilla person who gets giddy about hand holding. My blocked and filtered list is probably longer than the dictionary at this point! Because I understand that triggering content does exist and I have the maturity/self preservation to not seek it out and make myself upset.

Finally, when I hear people acting all high and mighty about censorship, all I can think about are the real life victims being silenced because their trauma is “too disgusting to talk about even in fiction” which only causes more harm by putting even more stigma onto real life victims.

Hi. Can we talk more about how awful the horror industry is? I feel like I'm talking to a wall trying to voice how awful it is

We could talk about how the horror industry has a tendency to create disabled antagonists for no reason other then "ooh how terrifying is it that someone's disfigured" or "doesnt it creep you out how someone so normal looking can be so insane on the inside" which already is ablest as hell but actually has historically harmed disabled people.

Or we could talk about how most victims in these movies are women for no other reason than to show women being the victims to, crimes done by a disabled man [which not only is pushing the idea that women are frail and should be victims but also creates this idea that any disabled man is going to hurt an able-bodied neurotypical women]

Or we could talk about how many horror movies just use the plot of "mentally disabled person hurts others and nuerotypical hero saves the day" which is yet another way society convinces people that anyone who's mentally disabled is a threat [we coukd even talk about how that idea makes it just that much easier for people to get away with brutalizing mentally disabled people if you want to get into it]

Or we could even just talk about how the horŕor industry has caused so many people to fear disabled people when, for one they themselves are more likely to be hurt by a neurotypical able-bodied person then anyone disabled, but also, a disabled person is more likely to be hurt then them
