drop the needle again

This thing where I don't sleep for more than five hours is not pleasing to me. Ugh. Also, I am ready to be done with my period now. It's been a week. This is too long! I'm told it's not unusual at this time of life, but ugh. I'm pretty sure these two items are related, but I can't prove it. Sigh.

I'd hoped to be more alert and awake because I'm supposed to be meeting with a contractor this afternoon, and then tonight, BILLY JOEL. FINALLY. We were supposed to go in June but he was sick so they postponed it to tonight. I've never seen him in concert but he is a formative musical influence for me! I AM EXCITE! Or I would be if I weren't exhausted.

Also exciting: Ocean's 8! I am already shipping Debbie and Lou! GIVE IT TO ME!

I guess I missed Wednesday reading last week, and next week I'll probably do my favorite books of the year, so here's this week's roundup:

What I've just finished
Canto Bight: Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which was okay? I'm not a short story person except in fanfic, which this basically is, but I just didn't care about any of these people. It did give some context for the scenes in the movie, but even so, I felt like these stories were all too long. And not ONE casino heist among them! COME ON. My needs were definitely not catered to here.

What I'm reading now
Persepolis Rising, the seventh Expanse book. With the 30 year time jump (!!!! maybe if I'd read the blurb I wouldn't have been surprised, but even when I read blurbs I have no recollection of them, so I was VERY SURPRISED), I was afraid we wouldn't see Avasarala again, but no! She shows up to be her brilliant and domineering self right when the shit hits the fan and she's needed the most! Plus, Bobbie POV! So I'm definitely enjoying it and expecting it to be the last book in the series, or at least the swansong for the Roci crew as we know them.

What I'm reading next
I expect I'll go back to Fosse when I'm done with Persepolis Rising.

Billy Joel was my very first big concert, something like...*gulp* 30 years ago. I still remember the effort he made to play to every corner of the basketball arena where the concert was held. (I also remember my cousin, 3 years older, who was sitting a few rows up from me coming down to cover my ears when he started in on "Only the Good Die Young" because she remembered how my very Catholic mother had highly disapproved of that song and been upset when I'd bought the album when I was in junior high:)

I know all the knocks on his music and agree with some of them, but, like you said: formative. I've been bopping around to Glass Houses for the past few months, thanks to this episode of Mark and Sarah Talk About Songs.

His piano was on a revolving platform, so he could play to everyone part of the arena, so that was great. And he was awesome! Sadly, he didn't play "Only the Good Die Young" but he hit everything else I wanted to hear and he was really excellent!

Oh hey, I have been sleeping like absolute shit too, and now I feel less alone. But I wish we could both get some relief! It's fucking awful!

It's terrible. Last night I was exhausted and I still tossed and turned like a dying fish. It was terrible.

I can't believe there was not one casino heist in Canto Bight, and now I'm less sad I won't have time to read it for awhile.

I guess they didn't want to go the obvious route? But I feel like if you set up Space Vegas, you should commit to a casino heist!

Eee, I saw Billy Joel and Elton John when they toured in... eighty something?? AWESOME. I hope it's a good show. He's definitely a good showman.

i'm so excited for ocean's 8! i mean, look at that cast! plus which, as tumblr pointed out, GIRL HEIST! how can that not be totally fantastic?

i saw billy joel like a million years ago - i was in college and i think i was a freshman, so late 80s - he couldn't do the really high notes so one of his backup singers did them in innocent man, but it was still a really fun show. apparently he still puts on a really good show! i'm impressed with him and a little jealous of you.

I KNOW! I'M SO EXCITED!

Yeah, the backup singers did a bunch of stuff, but he just rocked out hard so I don't care that he maybe can't do some of the things he could when he was younger.
