Welcome!

Welcome to my livejournal! This is my personal journal and most postings about my day-to-day life are friends-only. However, all of my fanfic and fandom meta is unlocked.

Please don't hesitate to friend this journal if you're interested in keeping up with my fandom life. There's no need to ask! If you'd like me to friend you back, though, please introduce yourself in a comment to this post!

Fic Progress (Updated: 02 August '13)

All my WIPs are pretty much on a semi-hiatus right now as a juggle a lot of responsibilities. I haven't forgotten them though, and I do get around to writing them when I have some time to spare and the muse strikes. Thanks for your continued support, everyone!

Links to all things fandom-related can be found on the links list to the left.

A quick fyi

I don't have much time to post today (boo work!), but I did want to mention that in the US today is the first National Gay Blood Drive. That may seem confusing considering men who have sex with men (MSM) can't donate blood in this country, which is the whole point.

If you have a second, please take the time to read up on this event. A quick google search of "national gay blood drive" will get you many other results if you're interested in more info.

Thanks!

Ding Dong...

So DOMA's been ruled unconstitutional and Prop 8 was overturned. More importantly, DOMA was ruled unconstitutional on the grounds of the fifth amendment, which is a really big deal. Like, really big.

The rulings today don't do anything for me officially--I still live in a state where I have no rights to marriage, job security, etc--but even the promise of one day having these rights is enough to be overwhelming in a really beautiful way. I'm so happy for everyone whose marriages are now legally recognized and who can now get married. And I'm very grateful to all the men and women (especially you, Edie) who fought this legal battle for all of us over so many years.

At the mention of Altoona, Pennsylvania in this morning's press conferences, I won't deny that I got a bit weepy. Harvey's legacy and message continues decades after his death. Hope is a powerful thing, and you really do have to give people hope.

Today's a good day to be an LGBT American.

Prop 8 & Windsor vs US

Tomorrow's the day when SCOTUS will decide the fate of some basic civil rights for LGBT citizens in this country. After today's decision on the Voting Rights Act, I'm getting pretty nervous that the outcome won't be a happy one for us. I don't believe LGBT people need marriage--we've done well enough for years without that institution--but we damn well have every right to it and all the legal assurances that go with it.

Please keep us in your thoughts. <3

Thoughts: A Song of Ice and Fire Book One

I finally broke down and picked up a copy of A Song of Ice and Fire: Game of Thrones. I read it in just over a week, which pretty much sums up my reaction to the first book in the series. I was cautious at first because I'm not a fan of Tolkien and worried that GRRM might channel some of that style, but he totally didn't as far as pacing and descriptions go. So I would recommend the series to those who may not like high fantasy/Tolkien.

Suffice to say I think it's brilliant.

I think that's that. I'm happy to discuss with anyone so long as we keep the discussion within book one. Please no spoilers. I already fear that reading this series is going to be like riding on a merry-go-round of knives, so I don't really want to dread anything else.

Also, I have plans to watch the first season of the series. I hope it's faithful to the book.
