ryland ‘i put the aroace in aerospace’ grace somehow saves the life of a doomed convict who now feels he owes grace everything. guy who’s too touch starved to turn down any kind of affection at all x guy who assumes he knows what he wants and is too grateful to deny him anything. martyr4martyr but neither of them truly want to be there. they never wanted to be there. they never had a choice. do you see the vision

i will say i think the biggest potential point toward it NOT being a standard eridian speech pattern in the movie is the fact that rocky doesn't use it sometimes, the most notable being when grace confirms he's going to die. "why didn't you tell me?" has no question indicator. you could argue it's a storytelling choice, maybe to keep the flow of a relatively serious conversation, but he doesn't even do the double tap, which could have been left in pretty unobtrusively

the other instance that comes to mind is when he's explaining the 'fishing' plan to what he thinks is a live feed to earth. and honestly that one's even more interesting, because while the 'question?' text-to-speech is missing, he DOES do a double tap, *after* he doesn't get an answer. it's translated as 'hello???'

possibly even more unpopular read that i’m 100% certain about: eridians ending sentences with ‘statement’ is absolutely not a thing at all. the only time rocky does that in the entire movie is a callback to when grace said it during the fishing trip

and it’s not even just that he can’t say no, it’s that when he caves he ends up going so far above and beyond what was remotely called for. he’s too scared to spacewalk but ends up taking a flying leap to catch the blip-c capsule. he tries to refuse to study the astrophage and ends up as eva stratt’s right hand man. he says they have to have boundaries and then lets rocky order him around for weeks. he says he won’t go to space to save the planet and then ends up saving two

Wait how is everyone else feeling about it? I’m not sure I’ve seen much on that specifically.

haha well ok i can’t speak for Exactly how everyone else feels about it but the impression i get from scrolling top posts/dashboard osmosis is that 1) people primarily see it as something that was Done To Him and 2) the discussion is mostly about the extent to which stratt was justified. whereas on first watch my partner was actively and exclusively critical of *grace*, and while i fully sympathized with him it never even occurred to me to question stratt’s actions

as for the way it affected my view of grace, it honestly made me like him more. when i assumed he volunteered himself, he read more as someone who stepped up in impossible circumstances and then got (understandably) scared/maybe regretted it when faced with the reality. in retrospect, realizing he was *always* scared and was never actually prepared to die (“i didn’t mean any of that. it’s just something you say”) it makes every risk he took after meeting rocky feel so much more meaningful. especially the last one, when he turns around and actually chooses another life over his own with his eyes wide open.

someone in the replies mentioned that this was more obvious in the book, but even with less emphasis on it in the movie it didn’t escape me that when he turned around to save rocky he was doing so with no reason to believe he’d survive much longer after that. it brings his character arc full circle and disconnects his happiness from earth at the same time, which is a big part of why i walked out of the theater feeling like the ending was the absolute best case scenario. he can go back if he wants to, but he doesn’t. he wanted to stay on earth because he didn’t have anything worth dying for, he wants to stay on erid because he finally found something that was
