back on my janka au bs again !
musician au... zanka's a bass player who's always wanted to pick up guitar but kept getting too angry that he wasn't learning fast enough & jabbers a guitarist who's super dedicated to his instrument (but actually knows how to play p much anything in the string family)
zanka hate stalks jabbers instagram everytime he posts something from a recent show/recordings of him playing & gets so fucking upset every time. he's too goddamn good at playing that stupid thing and zanka hopes that he gets carpal tunnel from playing. the guitar itself is beautiful and zanka loves to see it catch the stage lights on the deep purple gloss... he's got an unassuming instrument. a black fender, however he swapped out the pick guard from white to a navy blue. no one cared about the bass player really, so if he was going to be half cropped out of photos he at least had to have a good looking instrument.
jabber Wants zanka. ...to play bass for him. and noooothing else. he sees something in zanka's eyes that he *knows* all too well-- a drive to create, a need to play. jabber wants to sit down with him in a small room and write music for weeks on end. he wants to write lyrics with him because zanka would tell him what sounds good and what sounds like terrible teenage poetry. he wants to share a stage with him and scream lyrics to him, freefalling into the music, and know that he'd be there no matter what. the foundation of the tune. he's heard rumors that zanka's a total diva when it comes to other people touching his instrument, and he wants to see for himself how crazy he is...
(they both get to a point where they make secret accounts to stalk the other more. zanka makes a jabber hate page that gets popular FAST. he is memed to death within the week. jabber's got a zanka fan page, posting every photo, clip, fan cam, you name it. he also gets popular fast, but only because most people are shocked at how dedicated this guy is??? to stanning someone?? who has like four pictures of him total???? and is totally inactive on social media???)
the widespread idea/meme that qifrey and olruggio are living in two different genres where qifrey thinks he's living a greek tragedy and olruggio thinks he is living in a slice of life BL manga is of course very funny, however that is to me a misrepresentation of olly's perspective specifically. I think olruggio thinks he's living in a slightly depressing piece of nordic social realism cinema about how life will never be quite what you wanted it to be and all you can do is get to terms with that as best you can and then either way one day you'll at least die
So the evidence implying Qifrey and Olruggio are romantically interested in each other is pretty well documented (myths, tassels, the entirety of witchen) but, I haven't seen as much about the scene that really seals for me that Qifrey wants to fuck Olruggio.
What happens literally is that we cut from baby Qifrey reaching for Olruggio and transforming, to adult Qifrey with his hand fisted in his lap, determinedly not reaching for Olruggio. And then he gets up and goes to stand in a lake and trigger his own PTSD to get the silverwood under control.
What happens symbolically is a guy thinks really hard about another guy, gets wood experiences an uncontrollable throbbing growth which fills him with horror and shame, and then he goes and stands in cold water until he can get it under control.
Completely insane scene construction. Yes, I know how the silverwood's growth is literally triggered, but sometimes a train going into a tunnel is the public transport system working as intended, and sometimes it's self-conscious Freudian symbolism.
Sometimes an evil parasite is an evil parasite, but sometimes it's also getting rock hard for your best friend.
Qifrey's Silverwood curse being an allagory for internalized homophobia while actively being in love/lusting after his male best friend is fucking genius. I am actually going a little bonkers over it!
What a beautiful show of symbolisim, in all of its uncomfortable horror. I love Witch Hat Atelier so much.
