Låt oss titta in i hans rum.

Moving to Harvey Mudd

Hey guys,
I had a question for the members of the community. I'm from Cincinnati, OH and might be transferring to Harvey Mudd for an internship at Biostar West. I've lived in Cincinnati for practically my whole life, and really have no idea of how I'd be getting around over there. I guess I was wondering if anyone knew about any local cheap housing, affordable or otherwise decently priced apartment places or the like? Oh, also, given that I'm probably going to be driving up there, does anyone have any tips for me, or things I should get in order before I get there?

I'm a prospective student for the class of 2011, and I'm wondering a few things. Mainly about the engineering program - I've heard it's good, but I'm wondering what the curriculum is like. I have the impression many engineering schools / programs do a lot of math and physics early on and don't address actual design until later on. Is this the case with Harvey Mudd? Or ought I expect a more hands-on, design-centered curriculum?

edit: Also, do they have Japanese at Harvey Mudd? The other Claremont schools (and is it a pain or anything to try and take classes at the other schools)? I'd like to keep learning that.

Frosh Placement Forms

In the spirit of scaring next year's frosh....

http://www.hmc.edu/acad/acadaffair…

Pity the Hum 1 choices aren't out yet, but I found the Chip Workshop and Jazz Workshop apps interesting - they didn't have 1-unit advising workshops last year. Also, no CS60 frosh this year, unless they're particularly awesome.

And if you're going to be a frosh at Mudd next year, this is as good a place as any to say hello! *waves*

berkeley v. harvey mudd

Hi everyone,

I'm a prospective Mudder that visited the campus a few weeks ago and really, really, REALLY liked HMC...until she visited Berkeley, and found out that she really, really, REALLY likes it there too.

I was wondering if any of you were in that Cal v. Mudd position, back in the day...and if you could offer any input, that would be most appreciated.

I've started a (rather incomplete) pro/con list here, if that would help. I think my biggest concern is that HMC is so close to home (about 35 minutes away), and I wouldn't really have a big change in environment--whereas at Berkeley, it's just so radically difficult and far from home that I know (or at least, I think) I'll be grow/mature exponentially. But then, I suppose there's no real reason I wouldn't mature like that at HMC. And then I think, what do even I know because I really don't know anything about anything and my head hurts so I have to turn to lj!

So yes. Thanks in advance for any help :)

Edit (4/29/6): Hi everyone. I just want to thank you all for taking out time from your busy schedules to leave such long comments; they all helped TREMENDOUSLY. I ended up visiting Mudd's campus again yesterday, to see if I could clarify how I felt...and that's where I've decided to go. I had lunch with Professor Bassman, talked to Professor Saeta again (I met him at the prefrosh weekend), and talked to more Mudders (whose constant willingness to help always amazes me). I just feel comfortable there, and I think it would be better for me to be in a small environment, even though it's not the world. And I shall certainly be considering Cal for grad school :) Thanks again for all your help--and perhaps I will be seeing some of you next year!
