MoMI LAB

The People’s Lab for Technology and Culture

MoMI LAB is a free, public, artist-led space at Museum of the Moving Image dedicated to exploring how emerging technologies are reshaping creativity, culture, and everyday life.

We are living through a period of extraordinary technological change. As new technologies become woven into daily life, there are few public places where people can examine their broader cultural and social implications.

MoMI LAB was created to help fill that gap. Through artist residencies, public programs, exhibitions, and hands-on experiences, the LAB creates opportunities for artists, technologists, researchers, and the public to explore emerging technologies and their implications for culture and society.

How we understand these technologies may prove as important as the technologies themselves.

Artists have long helped society navigate periods of profound change. MoMI LAB builds on that tradition by supporting artists whose work helps us explore the cultural and social implications of emerging technologies.

What We Do:
MoMI LAB’s work is organized around three core areas.

Public Programs
MoMI LAB presents talks, screenings, performances, workshops, and live events exploring the creative, cultural, and social impact of emerging technologies. All programs are free and open to the public.

Artist-Led Research & Residencies
MoMI LAB supports artists and technologists working with emerging tools through residencies and research projects. The emphasis is on experimentation, creative process, and public presentation. Each residency culminates in a public exhibition or program.

Education & Digital Literacy
MoMI LAB is a drop-in public space where visitors can explore emerging technologies through hands-on workshops, interactive experiences, and artist-led learning. The emphasis is on creativity, expression, and practical understanding of how new technologies are shaping work, culture, and communication.

Guiding principles:
These principles guide everything we do at MoMI LAB.

  • Free and open to everyone
  • Led by artists and shaped through public participation
  • Engage with emerging technologies through curiosity, rigor, imagination, and healthy skepticism
  • Build a growing public archive of ideas, research, and creative practice
