First Man

Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. Damien Chazelle. 2018, 141 mins. U.S. DCP with Dolby Atmos. With Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll, Christopher Abbott. Damien Chazelle followed up his Oscar win for La La Land with this surprising left turn, a brooding astronaut saga that plumbs genuine psychological depths in telling the life story of Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon in 1969 as part of NASA’s long-gestating Gemini program. In a kind of flip side to his portrayal of goofball loneliness in Project Hail Mary, Gosling gives one of his best performances as a family man unable to bask in the fame and success of his world-changing mission, dealing with family tragedy. Featuring stellar supporting work from Claire Foy, First Man is a sophisticated and movingly human depiction of the years leading to the Apollo 11 mission, featuring a monumental orchestral score by Justin Hurwitz and tremendous visual effects authenticity supervised by Dune’s Paul Lambert.
