* Two PWHL teams are moving to new arenas! Two of the OG teams, from before the league took off, teams with arena deals made before a single game was played and no one knew what would happen, are moving. Ottawa Charge are moving to the Canadian Tire Center, where the NHL team plays. Boston Fleet, a dominant team, are moving into Boston! Slightly smaller arena, but no longer out in Lowell.

Is is just the Fleet and the Victoire not in NHL-sized venues?

* Ian Kennedy continues to be a blight on PWHL coverage. He put out a big article bemoaning that the Pdub aren't honoring earlier women's teams by using old team names, like the WNBA and other sports are doing. Listen, I love that the name of the historical Seattle women's hockey team is the Seattle Vamps. I'd love to see some slightly grunge goth branding around all that, pretend that 'vamps' is short for 'vampires'. But like, that's not what 'vamps' means in oldey timey lingo. We cannot call a Pdub team The Vamps. We can do reverse retro jerseys and history nights, but there is a reason why he didn't get into what some of the old teams were actually fucking called.

* I am not going to survive how annoying journalists trying to keep their clicks up in offseason are going to be. Go away and let me enjoy clips of my favorite player being a kid's hockey coach up in Nova Scotia.

* In Kraken Territory - local news is: Vince Dunn was a dumbass who posted pictures of himself parachuting and then deleted them; NHL players under contracts aren't typically allowed to recreationally throw themselves from planes. One of our goalies is getting married in some European castle this weekend, meaning we get pictures of squids in nice suits. Melly is off doing his offseason coaching stuff with his lifelong friend CJ Jackson; he uses his salary to subsidize hockey clinics for kids that he runs in the town they're from. Melly is the one unsigned player for next season; he's had a qualifying offer but like we want to see what the actually contract looks like and if it's 2-way or not. We've got a new squid who is tied for tallest NHL player in history; fandom is being very normal about this.

Also, thank you Flyers for fucking over one of our divisional opponents.

* In UFA land, still waiting to see where Tolvy and Prokop land.

Canada Successfully Exploring for ‘White’ Hydrogen Gas, a Clean Power Source Beneath Existing Mines

Scientists in Canada have discovered that ancient underground rocks are naturally producing hydrogen gas—and lots of it, and it may be everywhere—and it may be cheap.

The rocks could offer another source of clean energy known for emissions accounting purposes as “white hydrogen,” a largely unexplored and hidden underworld resource with the potential to help power industries and remote communities while reducing dependence on fossil fuels
.

This could be useful.

Recently Finished
The Gang of St Bride's & Murder in Ratcliffe
Books 9 and 10 in the Penny Green series. I like historical murder mysteries with female protagonists, which means that the majority of them are also het romances, because that's the way the genre goes, and they almost all start with the MC being against marriage and not wanting to lose her freedom, but of course she falls for this guy and they do end up getting married. Well, I have to say that I really like the way that this series follows through with that and has Penny have really mixed feelings about having gotten married. On the one hand, she loves her husband and wants to be with him, but even though he was okay with her continuing her job at the newspaper, the newspaper's owner insisted she quit as it wouldn't be proper for a married woman to write for the paper, and she is feeling bored and restless and upset that she is now expected to do nothing but be a wife and eventual mother (which she does not want, either).

The Safe Room
Short story I got through Amazon First Reads. A woman is cleaning out her father's house after his death and finds out he was keeping a lot of secrets. I enjoyed this. Would have been good as a full length novel, too.

Louis Undercover
Graphic novel about a young boy whose parents split up because of his father's alcoholism. I liked this a lot.

Kibry's Lessons for Falling (in Love)
YA graphic novel about a gay Chinese American girl who starts falling for her new best friend and fellow student newspaper writer. The story was cute, but the art was really rough.

Nodame Cantabile vol. 18

Today is cloudy, humid, and hot. It rained off and on this morning, then poured during part of today.

We went out to an art fair, so I haven't fed the birds yet. I bought a tiny ceramic dish on a stake that will serve as another bug watering dish. :D

On the way home, I spotted a red-headed woodpecker. They used to be common here, but nowadays I mostly see downy woodpeckers. It makes sense that they would be active now, because of all the storm-damaged trees attracting colonizing insects. There was a small branch down in our driveway that had clearly been killed by the previous storm because all its leaves were already brown.

EDIT 7/11/26 -- I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 7/11/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 7/11/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 7/11/26 -- I cracked open a black plum pit, but it had no seed inside. I cracked 2 apricot pits, both yielding a good seed which I put into the bag of damp sand to stratify.

1) I got a bit of a break in between the time the workmen finished in our apartment and my partner came back from visiting his family. There were things to be done but I needed him here to do them. Read more... )

2) I had an especially poor night of sleep, getting maybe 3 hours yesterday. I ended up reading from 4 AM onwards until 6 when the grocery opened. It was my first grocery shop for two weeks so it was mostly fresh foods I had to restock.

One real plus is that I suspect the store had over-ordered watermelon for the 4th of July. I had to double take when I walked past the boxes and saw that they were marked at 99 cents. Not per pound, per watermelon! I hadn't planned to buy any since I had cherries I wanted to stock up on. But they were mostly bright red, so I just got one bag of dark ones. And two watermelons -- the ripest looking ones of the dozen or so left.

3) I also wanted my partner back to watch stuff on Prime before we cancel it. We saw the finale of Good Omens. Read more... )

4) Spain vs. Belgium. Read more... )

[personal profile] inchoatewords asks: "If money were no object, describe your perfect vacation."

I answer: Easy. Japan tour. I want to hike Mt. Fuji, see so many different landscapes, go up to Hokkaido for snow crab and snow and hot springs, go down to Kyushu for beaches, see Masamune's castle, go to shrines, take bullet trains, see the giant Gundam statue, eat tons of food, attend a baseball game, go to Akihabara for the hell of it, and take over a thousand photos of it all.

I have a lifetime membership to Convergence because I was invited to be a guest of the convention in, I believe, 2000. Yet I have not attended every year because it always fell on the weekend of my anniversary, and that sometimes conflicted with our anniversary plans.

This year the convention fell on my 40th anniversary. I decided to go, partly because I knew both of my girls would be there, and I hoped that having them with me for company would help.

Fiona and Alona brought M, too, and I got the pleasure of holding my granddaughter's fingers as she tottered around the dealer's room, chortling with joy.

.

I didn't stay at the hotel, as the rooms were rather expensive. This added some degree of difficulty, because there was no way to retreat when I became tired and needed to get away from people for a while. Still, I did enjoy myself. I got a few things in the dealer's room, and I attended some enjoyable panels. I got added at the last minute to a panel on Sunday, and that went very well.

I got a bit sad on Sunday, the date of the actual anniversary, which I had expected. I survived.

Image description: Background: convention flyers posted on a wall. Lower right: Fiona wearing a costume of a lady knight, with red tabard, shield with a lion, mail shirt, gorget, with a stuffed black cat on her shoulder (Alanna from the Tamora Pierce books). Lower left: Alona, seated and holding M in her lap (M's face is blurred). Center: a patch with a sword that reads "Current side quest brought to you by ADHD. Below that (between Fiona and Alona): an embroidered square which reads: "Reading is Sexy." Lower left: an embroidered square with the Evenstar with the words: "I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone." Top: the Convergence logo, with an outstretched female robot. Upper right: a glowing white butterfly.

1. I went to Disneyland after work this evening and had a nice dinner. Sadly it was still very sunny and muggy for most of the time, but I enjoyed myself despite that!

2. I've been taking a bike ride every evening lately and was loathe to skip it today due to going straight to Disneyland from work, so I took a ride in the morning after my walk and before going to work. I rode over to Sidecar and got the passionfruit donut that Carla had the other day and it was definitely the best of their new summer flavors.

3. I was out of the house for about twelve hours but did not come home to any ants, vomit, or cat pee, for which I am very grateful!

4. Gemma is so suspicious! I love this pic, though. It really does capture her personality perfectly.

[personal profile] inchoatewords asked: "What are your top 3 albums?"

I answer: HOOBOY. This is so hard because if you ask it's inevitably going to be based on what my musical mood is for the given month. I think I can narrow it down to 3 top tier albums and 3 5 honorable mentions? I listen to a lot of different things, but the majority of my favorite albums tend to learn toward the rock/punk/metal side of things, as a heads up!

Top 3:

1. Valiant Hearts - Odyssey. Oh my goodness. The guitar goes way harder than it ever has any right to be, the lyrics are all nothing short of poetry (seriously, "Oh my radiant and colorful star, I'll never get tired of just how beautiful you are?" Tell me more romantic words have been written, I dare you.), and when I was listening to music on Spotify this album or its songs consistently ranked within my top 10s. If you check out one song from here, please, please make it Colorwave; I've only listened to it over 500 times.
2. The Band CAMINO - tryhard - Fun fact! I was terrible at liking music in high school. I only liked obscure Japanese indie music and video game soundtracks because pop music was banned from the house and I didn't like how a lot of American music sounded anyway. I started exploring other genres in college, but this was the album that truly broke me out of my musical shell and taught me about exploring all kinds of different genres. It was a bit of a lifeline during grad school as well. See Through is my top song of all time, having listened to it... um. Greater than 1000 times.
3. EastNewSound - Lucent Wish. I could have put a ton of Touhou doujin albums on here, and honestly, this could be swapped with the one in the Honorable Mention. But Lucent Wish was one of the first doujin albums I discovered, and it still has a grip on my psyche to this very day. The full album I don't think is on Youtube, so I've just linked to the main single, but it's a phenomenal album all the same, and I love both the instrumental and the full versions - find them if you can!

Honorable Mentions:

1. Capital Lights: This Is An Outrage! Absolutely delightful pop punk with lyrical wordplay that still leaves me with a big ol' grin on my face. Worth As Much As A Counterfeit Dollar would be my go-to karaoke song.
2. Intervals - Circadian A very recent addition to the music library, but holy crap the instrumentals on this go hard. I've hit most of my gym PRs to songs on here and I don't plan on stopping. Signal Hill and 5-HTP are the best songs on here.
3. Minstrel - あの日の蜃気楼 While putting this list together, I discovered the band has put their entire discography on Youtube for free and I almost cried. This group means a lot to me and has greatly informed my overall musical taste. 平安エヰリアン is the best song bar none.
4. Foxblood - Dissociation Vacation This album is my go-to for rage singing. It's like Capital Lights with significantly more edge and just the same amount of wordplay and lyrical genius. Hollywood would also be my go-to song for karaoke, even though I can barely do the spoken word portion without gasping for breath at the end.
5. MisteryCircle - So What? Another absolutely phenomenal rock band from high school that informed my overall music taste. Highly recommend both the title song and Regression.

Ugandan Coffee Growers Shrug Off Drought Thanks to Regenerative Agriculture

Among the rolling hills of Uganda’s Masaka region, robusta coffee plants are producing larger, tastier yields thanks to a pilot program utilizing regenerative agriculture to battle droughts or erratic rainfall.

A catch-all term for a variety of growing techniques as simple as mulching to as complex as cover cropping, regenerative agriculture is especially useful in the coffee belts where nutrient-poor tropical soils and heavy rainfall make erosion a real threat to productive crops
.

Of course regenerative farming works. Nature knows how to compensate for common problems. Humans just need to quick fucking up those processes.
