Success stories from Jessica Yang, Director of Workforce Acquisition and Development - New Americans
R.G. Certified Nursing Assistant
I am particularly passionate and pleased with the success we achieved in supporting R.G., a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) working in one of our metro Monarch buildings. During a visit to the facility, I had the opportunity to introduce the New American Grant Program, which had just launched. Later that same day, R.G. reached out to me via phone to learn more about the program and explore how it could support him.
R.G. shared his personal struggles, including being the sole provider for his family. He has four children, two of whom are adults and live independently, while the other two—an infant and a minor—still reside with him. His wife stays at home to care for their children, which leaves R.G. as the primary breadwinner. This responsibility has placed a constant financial strain on him as he worries about meeting the demands of paying rent, utilities, and other basic needs such as baby food.
In December, R.G. faced the added stress of receiving an eviction notice from his landlord. Recognizing the urgency of his situation, R.G. reached out to our partner, Manal Mohammed from WellShare, and me. Manal immediately prioritized R.G.'s case, given the gravity of his circumstances, and worked diligently to provide him with the support he needed.
During this process, we provided R.G. with several applications to complete, including SNAP/EBT, WIC, the Minnesota Family Investment Program, and Energy Assistance. After filling out the applications, R.G. asked if Manal and I could assist him with the interview portion, as he felt more confident with our support and believed we could help if needed. Once the interviews were completed, R.G. was successfully able to receive the assistance he had been seeking. This collaborative effort ensured that he got the necessary support to address his financial challenges and improve his situation.
C.W. Nursing Assistant in Training
I would like to share is about an individual referred to me by Lorpu Hunter at NorthPoint Wellness, who mentioned that she is an immigrant. Her name is C.W., and we worked closely together for two months. During this time, we discussed her goals and aspirations, and I learned that she is a single mother of four minor children.
I assisted C.W. in several important steps toward achieving her career goals. This included referring her back to Lorpu Hunter to help update her resume, guiding her through the application process for the Nursing Assistant in Training (NAIT) position at Monarch, and preparing her for her online interview with a member of our recruitment team. Throughout this journey, C.W. worked tirelessly to organize her life to provide a better future for her family here in the United States.
I am thrilled to share that C.W. is now employed as a full-time NAIT at one of our metro Monarch facilities. It has been incredibly rewarding to help her secure employment, and I am grateful to have been part of her journey. Moving forward, I remain committed to offering any further assistance she may need as she continues to build a better life for herself and her children.
E.D. Certified Nursing Assistant
Another success story is about a high school senior named E.D., whom I met during an outreach visit to Venture Academy. E.D. shared with me that he had recently been accepted to Augsburg University with a full scholarship and has aspirations of becoming a nurse one day. He also mentioned that he already holds his CNA license but had been struggling to secure employment—facing multiple rejections from places he applied.
After hearing his story, I felt strongly that I needed to support this young individual. He is bright, motivated, and represents the future of healthcare. I conducted a prescreening with E.D., helped him find a CNA position at a Monarch facility near his home, and referred him to our recruitment team for a formal interview. He has since completed both training and orientation and is officially employed.
To ensure he is fully equipped for success, I am now working with our partners at CareProviders to help E.D. obtain the necessary uniforms and shoes for his new role. Supporting him through this process has been incredibly rewarding, and I look forward to watching his journey unfold as he takes his first steps into the healthcare field.
