Are you fed-up with garbage, full-of-shit sites where nobody actually communicates, such as Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr? Do you wish your old friends who've migrated to those sites would return to LiveJournal? The the_lj_revival community has been set up with that aim in mind, and you are invited to join it. If you are already on LiveJournal and still have a Facebook profile, and would like to see more people returning to LJ or setting up accounts here, we invite you to post a link to this community on your Facebook Timeline. If you would like to find out who is still using LiveJournal and make contact with those who are already here, you are invited to copy and paste the 'about me' questions on the profile page and post them with your answers to the community.

California Deathrock Behind-the-Scenes Photo Shoot Video

LJ is finicky about video embeds, so we had to transfer this vid to YouTube and use the legacy code, but here it is now :-)

California Deathrock Behind-the-Scenes Photo Shoot Video

May 22, 2012 | Filed underBooks,Headline,Personalities,Video | Posted by Amelia G

It was hard to make this video happen because working on it was giving me the hugest spasm of shyness. Fortunately, Forrest Black and I still managed to bust it out. So now you can see behind-the-scenes footage of what our nightlife portraiture shoots look like, as part of the Kickstarter for our California Deathrock book project.

I love the idea of doing a creative project where I know how many to print beforehand. The way Kickstarter is set up, people pledge to get a copy of the book, but Amazon only charges them after the funding period is complete (in this case the end of the first week of June) and then only if the project is 100% funded. So far, our photo book project is 88% funded, so it looks like it is going to happen, which I am super happy and more than a little relieved about.

Special thanks to Death Guild and Release the Bats where some of this video was shot. Much love to Margo, Satoki, Thee Gabe, Domiana, Kat, Thistle (RIP), Talia, Christian, Jenn Bats, Dave Bats, Shane Taleda, Matt Riser, Eva O, and everyone else in the contact sheets and photos and video footage.

Anyway, just push play already please :-)

Soft Blue Mohawk

Alecia Joy posted to Blue Blood VIP in photos shot by your truly and Forrest Black.

Forrest Black and I had a great time with her shooting and you all should expect to see lots more of her. Readers will be seeing some select images from this shoot in the forthcoming issue of Marquis, but Blue Blood VIP members get to see the whole thing. Here is a great anecdote excerpted from the Marquis #51 feature on Alecia Joy: recently, Alecia Joy got some metal grinding training for GrindKore from Perish, who we covered in Marquis #43. Alecia Joy is a trooper and she has the scars to prove it, because the show must go on. At a recent, "metal grinding performance [she] ended up giving [herself] a grind burn when a drunk person's head came dangerously close. It was a reflex to pull away when [she] saw the bald head flying by, so [she] pulled the grinder away and consequently missed the metal on [her] outfit and ground two lines into [her] inner thigh. [She] finished the performance and rinsed it out, but metal shards were embedded. Alecia adds that "the owner of the club came by and gave [her] a bunch of drink tickets, but all [she] wanted was for the fire in [her] leg to subside! Part of [her] wanted to sit out the performance [she] was supposed to do after that, but [she] found that the fake blood in the kiddy pool actually soothed the burn." Best use for a kiddy pool full of blood. Ever.

(no subject)

Hi hawked folks. Here is my obligatory newbie photo; it's from Umloud 2010, where I played fake bass in a fake band for a real charity. Clickable for other band/event photos.

(I am, obviously, the one with the mohawk.)

I have a few questions which I didn't see in the FAQ (which I found on archive.org if anyone else is looking for it).

First: 'Cause my hair is so short, it puffs up on its own when it's quite dry. This is neat; however, it also tends to flare out at the top, which looks silly. Collapse ) Is this an attribute of the cut (i.e. it should be tapered to balance that out) or just a job for hair gel? My hair is really thin/fine, so all other things being equal I prefer to leave it alone.

... that said, I'm intending to dye it pretty soon. I've read up a little on tips for masking off the sides of the head (tape, vaseline), but welcome any more advice I can get. Similarly, looking for stiffening product recommendations that aren't crazy expensive. Because it's still short enough not to need much, I'm thinking more along the lines of something that gets worked in after a shower and then washed out regularly than something that stays in all the time.

Last but not least: Is there any hope at all for maintaining a good-looking upright mohawk when one wears a helmet regularly? So far I've been leaving it natural, which works okay, but I don't see a way to do anything else without fucking it up.

Deathrock TJ Van Shock and Secret Sin (PICS)

Forrest Black and I were thrilled to collaborate with two such awesome individuals as TJ Van Shock and Secret Sin for this photo shoot. In our artistic exuberance, we used two different kinds of film and we shot some digital as well. Which means that we shot work of them together with three different color palettes. This is probably a more common approach for magazine work, but, after some contemplation, I feel like Blue Blood VIP members deserve to get that magazine quality, so I'm going to share the variety of formats. I think this first film sequence is really erotic. Blue Blood VIP members will of course be familiar with Secret Sin. TJ Van Shock you should know from his stints in Fearcult, Radio Scarlet, and other fine deathrock bands. Or you might recognize him from the Christina Aguilera music video for her song "Beautiful". We've got some beautiful for y'all here.
