The fucking weird thing about it, is Lip knows he should be doing more this summer. When you're a Gallagher, summer is for making as much money as you can for the winter to build up the Squirrel Fund. Maybe the past couple of years, college and all that fucking came with it had taken up his last few summers, but before then, there'd been selling loosies and taking book out of the ice cream truck.

Now it's been a couple of summers without all that and Lip feels kind of antsy.

He takes his brother for the day, figuring even Fiona'll want some time off from watching Liam. They head to the park, get some ice cream from a truck Lip is about 80 percent sure is actually legit. Mostly, it makes him want to find an old truck, get it working and start up again for the summer. Hell, maybe even into the fall.

Not that he or Fiona actually need the money right now, but he still doesn't trust the money that gets deposited in their bank accounts every month. All that's probably part of being a Gallagher too, so it's not like he can help it.

By the time Lip brings Liam back to Fiona's, he's already halfway to wanting a nap, and there's ice cream still around his mouth, but Lip's convinced his kid brother's had a good day.

He knocks on the door, and Liam runs past Fiona and inside when she opens the door, Lip following just after.

"Hey, have you seen any salvage yards in the city at all?" Lip asks, in place of a hello.

It's unexpected, as far as greetings go, Fiona just barely managing to grin at Liam as he darts inside before turning to Lip. On one hand, she's not really sure that's such a bad thing. Showing up here, Lip coming from some time before her, everything having gone to shit the way it did back home, she hadn't known if this would ever be possible. Things are never going to be normal here, not without the rest of their family, but this is probably as close to it as they're going to get. That doesn't change the fact that his question is a weird way to say hello, her brow furrowing as she shuts the door behind them.

"Salvage yards?" she asks, almost like she's not sure she's heard him right. "No, but there probably is one around here somewhere. Why?"

"Yeah?" Fiona asks, though all things considered, it shouldn't be — it isn't — that surprising. Back home, that sort of thing was a necessity, something that would go without saying. Here, she can't pretend that the money wouldn't be helpful, and a hell of a lot better than waiting for monthly handouts that she has no idea the source of, but it's just the three of them now, not a whole family to take care of. They get by. And she can think of other ways he could be spending his time. "You know you could probably do better than a salvaged ice cream truck, right?"

Maybe it's just because old habits are so instilled in her, but it's not like Fiona can ignore the potential usefulness in that. Back home, it would've made a hell of a lot of difference, and here, it definitely won't hurt. She just can't help thinking past that, either. Right before she'd shown up here, Lip had told her that he'd passed his midterms, and this seems like a step backwards. They don't need the Squirrel Fund here; as difficult as it's been for her at times, they don't have half as many mouths to keep fed. They can start to shift their focus a little.

"You got any plans for after that?" she asks, as casually as she can, leaning back against the fridge. "You know, once fall rolls around?"

"Oh, yeah, 'cause that always ends well," Fiona says, rolling her eyes. She's careful not to sound too serious, too soon, but this conversation is one that's probably been a long time coming. It doesn't really surprise her that Lip doesn't seem to be considering anything more serious. Still, maybe especially because it's just the two of them and Liam here now, she thinks he could be doing more than trying to scrounge up cash. "There's a school here, you know. Seems like it's a pretty good one."

"Seriously?" Even as she says so, Fiona knows she doesn't really need to ask. It's nothing new, nor is it all that surprising, when she really thinks about it. She might've hoped that things would be different here, but that doesn't mean she'd really expected it to be. If all of this was a trial back home, of course it would be here, too. "Come on, you don't need me to tell you what the point would be."

"Alright, you wanna talk hypotheticals? Here's another," Fiona replies, not missing a beat. "That doesn't happen. You and me and Liam, or just you, or whatever, are stuck here for the long haul. You keep waiting to wind up back home, but it doesn't happen. You're gonna spend the next God knows how many years of your life making money selling joints out of ice cream trucks or getting your ass kicked on the off chance that you might get back there? There's every chance this is what your life is gonna be now, and you're just gonna waste it?"

It's just a variation on a theme. They had arguments like this countless times back home, when she was trying to get Lip to graduate, and it's not really surprising that the same sort of thing is happening now. That isn't going to stop her from trying.

"You keep saying back home, but this might be home now," Fiona points out, and she's careful to keep from raising her voice in turn. A conversation like this, one that seems like a variation of a theme of one they've had so many times, and it would be easy to get carried away. However much Liam has been exposed to in his short life, though, she doesn't just want to start yelling at Lip with him in the other room. They've got a chance to do things differently here. She means to take it. "We don't know how long we're gonna be here, or if there's ever gonna be a way back at all. "You've been here for, what, months now? A year? You might be in this for the long haul, Lip."

"Oh, please, what would I get a degree in? Selling cups?" Fiona asks, huffing out a breath that isn't quite a laugh, her expression dubious. Even getting her GED didn't open up many doors for her back home, and though she doubts that would really matter here, she still can't see herself getting very far. She could get some useless degree, but it wouldn't do all that much for her. "Come on, Lip, you know I'm not smart like you. And, hey, if you're gone in a week or tomorrow, it won't have made any difference, 'cause you won't have gotten to do anything anyway."
