Development

• Tighter connection of the Wikibase Ecosystem: We've been working on making it possible to use Wikidata Items (and later from other Wikibase instances) as values in statements on other Wikibase instances. You can now try it out on a demo system or set up your own test instance to give it a try. More details in the announcement.
• Wikidata integration in the Wikimedia projects: We are continuing the work on showing less irrelevant changes on recent changes and watchlist on Wikipedia and co by trying to determine if an edit from Wikidata actually changed the rendered article or not
• Mobile statement editing:
  • We worked on reducing the load for users with limited data
  • We are continuing to fix issues uncovered in testing
• Making Wikiprojects more visible: We are getting ready for testing of the prototype. We'll be adding links to the respective Wikirojects on Item pages in the tools menu to make it easier for people to find the corresponding Wikiprojects. This is based on statements already on the Item such as specific external IDs.

Wikimedians of Kerala - April 2026 Newsletter

This is the Wikimedians of Kerala UG's 27^th newsletter.

User group news

• On 25^th April 2026, we held our April 2026 Monthly Meetup from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm IST. The agenda for the meeting was shared and everyone was welcomed. A total of 6 community members participated in the meeting and discussions.
  • Ranjithsiji and Adithyak shared updates from the Wikisource Summit 2026, which was organized at Calicut University. Participants from Malayalam, Tamil and Tulu community members also attended the two-day event.
  • Jinoy shared updates about the Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2026 campaign organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Ukraine in New Delhi and communities in India. 47 people joined and contributed during the campaign period in India
  • Ranjithsiji and Sreekrishnan shared the updates about the ongoing Malayalam Wikivoyage activities and improvements. Discussed the need for further enhancements and issues.
  • Athul shared the updates about closure of Wikimedians of Kerala Anniversary Programme and submission of final report.
  • Ranjithsiji shared the Wikivoyage Day plan announced by Sreekrishnan. Plans to organize activities were discussed.
  • Vijayanrajapuram shared plans to create school related pages on Wikipedia. Athul and Ranjith shared their thoughs on doing follow up activies.
  • Jinoy and Athul shared the updates about the WikiConference India 2026 which is going to happen in Kochi. Around 400+ applications have been received for scholarships and the team is currently reviewing the applications.
    • For those who missed applying for the scholarship the self funded registration will be opened.
  • Ranjithsiji shared updates about the Wiki Loves Theyyam 2026 which started on March 17 and will end on May 17.
  • Jinoy shared and invited the community members to share the stories, community highlights and activities from across South Asia to WikiDhara - The echoes from South Asia. (read more...)

• LexeMap - is a lexeme coverage mapper that audits Wikidata lexeme data across languages. It runs live SPARQL queries against Wikidata and cross-references against Wiktionary to identify gaps in lexicographical data.

• Starting May 28, 2026, the Special:EntityData page will no longer support the PHP‑serialized format (e.g .php URLs). Affected requests will return HTTP errors. Please switch to a stable format like JSON (example: Q42.json). The change is already active on test and beta wikis. (full announcement)

Wikimedians of Kerala - May 2026 Newsletter

This is the Wikimedians of Kerala UG's 28^th newsletter.

Updates / Discussions

• On 25th May 2026, we held our May 2026 Monthly Meetup from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm IST. The agenda for the meeting was shared and everyone was welcomed. 10 community members participated in the meeting and discussions.
  • Ranjithsiji shared updates about Wiki Loves Theyyam 2026, which was conducted as a pilot project from 17 April to 17 May 2026. Around 650 images were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by 16 contributors. Discussions were held on organizing follow-up activities closer to the Theyyam season.
  • Jinoy shared updates from Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2026 in India, organized in collaboration with Wikimedia communities and partner organizations.
    • Around 45 participants took part in the campaign by creating 71 new pages and improving around 327 pages across Wikimedia projects. An offline Wikipedia editing workshop was organised at Embassy of Ukraine, New Delhi along with a cultural activity and continued the online campaign till the end of April.
  • Ranjithsiji shared updates from Wikisource Summit 2026, organized at the University of Calicut. A total of 18 participants attended the event, including contributors from other language communities. Discussions focused on collaboration and technical improvements for Wikisource projects.
  • Jinoy shared updates about WikiConference India 2026. The conference theme has been announced. The theme for WCI 2026 is "Reimagining the Knowledge Commons" - Community Leadership in an Evolving Wikimedia Ecosystem.
  • Ranjithsiji shared plans for a Wiki Loves Schools edit-a-thon, aimed at creating and improving school-related articles using information collected through the SchoolWiki project and previous photography campaigns.
  • Ranjithsiji announced preparations for Wiki Loves Earth India 2026, which is planned to begin on 1 July 2026. Community members were encouraged to participate and help document natural heritage sites across India.
  • Jinoy and Ranjith shared updates from Wikimedia Hackathon 2026 in Milan. The GLUES tool (Global Wikimedia User Information and Statistics) was developed and improved during the hackathon and was presented during the event. The tool provides a centralized dashboard for Wikimedia contributor information and receives valuable feedback from participants across multiple communities. Further enhancements to the tool were discussed.
  • Ranjithsiji shared updates about Coordinate Me 2026, an international Wikidata campaign focused on improving geographic coordinates of Wikidata items. Community members were encouraged to participate before the campaign concluded at the end of May.
  • Ranjithsiji shared updates on the Malayalam Wikivoyage initiative. Monthly community meetings have been held regularly over the past three months. An analysis tool named Inkpen has been developed and support was requested for the Malayalam Wikivoyage approval proposal.
  • Community members also discussed the ongoing digitization of M. P. Parameswaran's works, potential collaborations with DC Books for bibliographic data sharing, plans for Kerala Cultural Month, the Women in Red tool developed by Netha Hussain for identifying missing articles, improvements to mobile navigation templates.
  • Ranjith and Jinoy shared an update received on Village pump of Malayalam Wikipedia and to User group's email regarding the participation in the Abstract Wikipedia pilot project. (read more...)

  • We are continuing to evaluate the prototype for reducing the number of unnecessary edits from Wikidata that show up in watchlist and recent changes of Wikipedia and co. The approach is to look at the diff of the rendered article before and after the change from Wikidata is made. If there is no difference then the change is probably not relevant for that article. We are collecting a sample to further understand how it performs.
  • To continue to address Wikidata's scaling issues, we are planning the migration of entity usage tables to the X1 cluster.
• Mobile editing of statements:
  • We implemented more feedback from testing of the new mobile front-end. Specifically we worked on making it clearer when a statements already exist that the editor is trying to add to the Item.
  • Additionally, we made minor improvements to the look and feel of the mobile front-end.
• REST API:
  • REST search routes now take apihighlimits right into account (phab:T428032)
  • We are starting to work on Lexeme support (phab:T429572, phab:T429332)
• GraphQL:
  • We added support for requesting “best statements” for a given Property (phab:T428138)
  • We are working on adding support for negation in Property value pair filters (phab:T429580)

  • Wiki Loves Earth 2026: Wiki Loves Earth India is an international photographic campaign and We are organizing it in India. More than four thousand files uploaded into this campaign. The campaign will end on 31st July 2026.
  • Wikiwomen Camp Kerala 2026: Wikiwomen Camp aims to bring together women who are active contributors to the Wikimedia movement. 23 editors participated in this two day camp at Kozhikode.
  • Wikimedia Technical Workshop 2026 at C-SiS CUSAT : We organized a Wikimedia technical workshop in collaboration with Centre for Science in Society (C-SiS), Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi, Kerala. 20 students from various colleges participated in this event. We started developing some tools with the help of participants.
  • Kerala Culture Month 2026 As part of Wiki Conference India 2026 we co-organized a writing campaign as a pre conference activity. The campaign started on 15th July 2026 and will end on 15th August 2026.

  • Rebot 3 - Task/s: Import 1389 instances of taxon author citation (P6507) from this Catalan Wikipedia list, compiled by bot from the articles.
  • Rebot 4 - Task/s: The task consists in changing these 1072 items. It has to change creator (P170) to the new property photographer (P14574). Also there are 1000+ items in which the property should be used as a qualifier.
  • Openpep - Task/s: Maintenance of Politically Exposed Person (PEP) data on Wikidata for Thai government officials. Specifically:
• Creating new Wikidata items for Thai politicians not yet in the database
• Adding P39 (position held) claims with proper qualifiers (P580 start time, P582 end time, P2937 legislative term for legislators, P1365/P1366 replaces/replaced by, P1545 series ordinal)

Development

• Query Service: We started preparing the constraint checks for the migration from Blazegraph to QLever.
• Page load times: We looked into unnecessarily loaded modules related to the Wikidata Bridge to see if we can remove them and speed up page load times.
• Wikipedia and co:
  • We worked with English Wikipedia to optimize the CiteQ module code to generate less usage tracking for "Anonymous".
  • We checked a variety of Mediawiki areas where Parsoid deprecation may lead to breakages.*
• Sustainability: We are planning to migrate the usage tracking data to the X1 extension cluster. We are checking which queries involving entity usage will need re-writing or updating.
• REST API: We finished adding support for getting a full Lexeme and started work on creating Lexemes.

• On 25th July 2026, we held our July 2026 Monthly Meetup from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm IST. The agenda for the meeting was shared and everyone was welcomed. 17 community members participated in the meeting and discussions.

• • Ranjithsiji shared updates about Wiki Loves Earth 2026 - The camapgin will run in July 2026. More than five thousand images are uploaded now.
  • Ranjithsiji shared updates about Wikimedia Technical Workshop 2026 at C-SiS CUSAT - The program was carried out in coordination with Centre for Science in Society, Cusat.
  • Siji shared updates about Wikiwomen Camp Kerala 2026. Program happened on July 11,12 at Kozhikkode. A photowalk was done in connection with Wiki Loves Earth 2026 in India.
  • Jinoy updated about a poster presented at Wikimania 2026.

  • Wiki Loves Schools 2026 We are organizing a writing campaign in Malayalam Wikipedia. The campaign started on 27th July 2026 and will end on 30th September 2026.
  • Wiki Loves Earth 2026: Wiki Loves Earth India is an international photographic campaign and We are organizing it in India. More than four thousand files uploaded into this campaign. The campaign was over on 31st July 2026.
  • Wiki Loves Onam 2026: Photography campaign to document Onam culture. The campaign is from 15th August 2026 to 15th September 2026

• REST API: We are continuing the work on making it possible to create a Lexeme and will then move on to adding statements to Lexemes.
• GraphQL: We are working on moving the Item search from cirrussearch to mariadb to be able to add more functionality.
• Newcomer homepage: We are updating the text to move it away from some Wikipedia-specific phrases (e.g. articles)
• Mobile editing: We worked on not showing edit links on old revisions and diffs since those can not be edited.

• The Wikimedia Deutschland software development plan has been updated to include activity estimates for the third quarter (Q3).
• The Wikidata development team is proposing a redesign of Special:NewItem with a warning banner and conflict-of-interest checkbox to reduce the increase in promotional editing. We need your feedback on the wording and designs. Head over to Wikidata:Reducing promotional editing and share your thoughts on the talk page by 15 September.
• Due to an increase of non-notable item creation, and their subsequent request for deletion (and undeletion), a new page has been created.
